Astyanax tumbayaensis is a small, reticulated characin endemic to a single irrigation channel near Tumbaya village in Jujuy Province, northwestern Argentina — one of the highest-altitude freshwater habitats known for any Astyanax species. Described in 2005 from specimens collected in a man-made channel draining into the Río Grande basin at over 2,000 metres above sea level, it stands out from its relatives by a strongly patterned body, an unusually elongated humeral spot, and the bony fin hooks on adult males that are absent from the pectoral fins — a small morphological detail that quietly sets it apart within a very large genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax tumbayaensis was described by Amalia M. Miquelarena and Roberto C. Menni in 2005 in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie, volume 112 number 3, pages 661–676. The type series was collected from a man-made irrigation channel near Tumbaya village, Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy Province, Argentina (approximately 23°51′S 65°28′W), at an elevation of 2,308 ft above sea level in the upper Río Grande drainage. The holotype is a male (ILPLA 1702) measuring 2.5 in standard length; paratypes are held under ILPLA 1513, ILPLA 1703, and MHNG 2652.90. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax tumbayaensis Miquelarena & Menni, 2005.

The species belongs to Astyanax, the largest genus in the family Characidae and one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics. Placing a new Astyanax to a natural species group remains difficult, but the authors noted that A. tumbayaensis occupies Paranensean zoogeographic space at extreme altitude — the Quebrada de Humahuaca has long served as a corridor connecting the Yungas fauna of northwestern Argentina with the broader Paraná system. No subspecies or synonyms are recognised.

Morphology

A moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin, Astyanax tumbayaensis reaches at least 2.5 in standard length in adult males; examined females ranged from 1.5–2.5 in SL. Body depth is relatively high (39.2–45.3% SL) and the head short and heavy (24.0–26.7% SL). The eye is small for the genus (28.9–35.0% head length), the interorbital width is very broad (38.8–44.1% HL), and the snout is short (16.1–20.8% HL). The anal fin carries iii–v unbranched rays followed by 19–22 branched rays, and the lateral line is perforated for 33–36 scales.

Coloration is the species' most distinctive attribute. The body shows a conspicuous reticulated pattern formed by dark-margined scales, and the dorsal, pelvic, anal, and caudal fins each carry dark margins. A large, vertically elongated humeral spot sits just behind the operculum, and a narrow, dark lateral stripe runs along the midline to terminate in a caudal spot at the base of the tail. Adult males develop bony hooks on the rays of the dorsal, pelvic, anal, and caudal fins — a sexually dimorphic feature widespread in Astyanax — but, unusually for the genus, hooks are absent from the pectoral fins.

Habitat

The only confirmed habitat for Astyanax tumbayaensis is the shallow man-made irrigation channel from which it was described, situated at 2,308 ft elevation near Tumbaya in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage valley in the eastern Andes of Jujuy Province. The channel was 6.5–8 in deep at the time of collection, with a muddy bottom overlaid by organic deposits, algae, floating aquatic plants, and grass at the margins. The species is known only from this single locality.

Water chemistry recorded at the type locality reflects the alkaline, high-altitude Andean environment: pH 8.1, temperature 65 °F (measured in spring), and low conductivity. These are notably cool, alkaline conditions for a lowland-derived genus; the high elevation and open quebrada exposure produce significant diurnal temperature swings in this environment. The channel drains into the Río Grande basin, part of the broader Río Pilcomayo–Paraná system, and the species has been placed in the Paranensean ichthyofaunal element that extends into the Andean valleys of northwestern Argentina.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies have been published for Astyanax tumbayaensis. The species inhabits a habitat rich in algae, aquatic vegetation, organic detritus, and the small invertebrates associated with marginal vegetation and muddy substrates — food sources typical of the opportunistic omnivory documented across the genus Astyanax.

In the aquarium, Astyanax species generally accept a wide variety of foods including quality flake and small pellets, along with live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Vegetable matter and algae-based foods are likely beneficial given the algae-dominated type locality. Data for this species in particular are sparse, and all husbandry inferences draw on the wider genus.

Mating

No mating observations have been published specifically for Astyanax tumbayaensis. Like other members of the genus, it is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the reproductive mode that defines Astyanax broadly. Males bearing bony fin hooks, as documented for A. tumbayaensis, are understood to use these structures to maintain close contact with females during spawning, a feature described across hook-bearing characins.

Given the densely vegetated margins and floating plants at the type locality, spawning likely occurs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation where adhesive eggs can attach. The precise seasonality of reproduction at this altitude, where temperature and daylength fluctuate considerably, is unknown.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records for Astyanax tumbayaensis appear in the published literature or the hobby literature. The species is not known to be held in European or North American collections, and its narrow range and high-altitude endemic status mean it is extremely unlikely to appear in the aquarium trade.

On the basis of genus-wide biology, breeding would be expected to follow the Astyanax pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or substrate, with small adhesive eggs receiving no parental care and requiring removal from adults to prevent predation. The cool water temperatures at the type locality (around 65 °F in spring) suggest that breeding temperatures may be lower than for typical warm-water tetras.

In the aquarium

Astyanax tumbayaensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is effectively unavailable. The species is endemic to a single irrigation channel in the high Andes, has not been exported for the trade, and its care requirements — in particular the cool, alkaline, high-altitude water chemistry — are specialised enough that it would require purpose-built conditions if ever maintained in captivity.

For comparative purposes, the cool spring temperature of 65 °F and pH 8.1 at the type locality suggest that cooler, alkaline water would be more appropriate than standard tropical tetra parameters. Any future husbandry efforts would benefit from referencing the original description by Miquelarena and Menni (2005) for precise habitat data.

Conservation

Astyanax tumbayaensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. The available evidence, however, points to significant conservation concern: the species is known from a single man-made irrigation channel at a single locality, and its entire described range is confined to one site in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Any modification, drainage, pollution, or abandonment of that channel could eliminate the species entirely.

The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a heavily used agricultural and tourist corridor, and the irrigation network that hosts the species is not a natural water body and is therefore subject to human decisions about land and water use. No conservation measures specifically targeting A. tumbayaensis are known. The absence of an IUCN assessment for this species — described in 2005 — reflects the lag between the description of small, range-restricted South American fishes and formal evaluation, not a judgment that the species is secure.
