Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax turmalinensis was formally described in 2003 by Mário Lúcio Triques, Vono, and E.V. Caiafa in the journal aqua, Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology (volume 7, number 4), based on material collected from Córrego Divisão, a tributary of the Rio Jequitinhonha near the locality of Peixe-Cru in the Município of Turmalina, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Astyanax turmalinensis Triques, Vono & Caiafa, 2003, with the type description appearing on page 146, figure 1, and reference ID 27248.
The species was originally placed in the then-subfamily Tetragonopterinae, a large, historically catch-all grouping within Characidae that has been extensively revised. Astyanax itself is one of the most species-rich and widely distributed genera of neotropical characids, ranging from the southwestern United States south through Central America and across most of South America. Within this expansive genus, A. turmalinensis represents a relatively narrow-range Atlantic-slope form tied to the Jequitinhonha drainage system of eastern Brazil. The description was based on external morphology, meristics, and morphometrics, with GBIF recording a valid distribution presence in the Jequitinhonha basin.
Morphology
Astyanax turmalinensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in (SL), making it a small to mid-sized member of its genus. The body is characteristically compressed and moderately deep, with the greatest body depth at the pelvic fin origin — a useful diagnostic feature noted in the original description. Fin ray counts as recorded in FishBase are: 2 dorsal spines plus 9 dorsal soft rays; 2–3 anal spines plus 18–21 anal soft rays, giving a total anal-fin ray count of 20–24. The lateral-line scale count is 34–36, and the maxilla bears 1–2 teeth.
The colour pattern features two prominent dark markings that distinguish this species within the Jequitinhonha Astyanax fauna. A humeral black spot is present on the shoulder region immediately behind the opercle, a common mark in the genus. More diagnostically, the caudal peduncle bears an oval spot that is horizontally elongated — flattened along the body axis — setting it apart from the more circular or vertically oriented peduncle marks seen in some congeners. Overall body ground colour is typical of Astyanax: a silvery, laterally compressed fish, likely with a faint lateral band in life, though detailed colour descriptions of living specimens are sparse in available records.
Habitat
The type locality of Astyanax turmalinensis is Córrego Divisão, a stream tributary of the Rio Jequitinhonha at Peixe-Cru, near Turmalina in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Rio Jequitinhonha is a significant Atlantic-slope river draining the eastern face of the central Brazilian highlands into the Atlantic Ocean in southern Bahia. The upper basin, where this species was described, is a landscape of seasonally variable stream systems in the caatinga-cerrado transition zone of northern Minas Gerais.
FishBase records the species as occurring in shallow, pelagic habitat from 0–3 ft depth — typical of the shallow, fast-to-slow stream reaches that characterise the upper Jequitinhonha tributaries. A subsequent distribution-extension study noted that the species' range may extend into drainages adjacent to the upper Jequitinhonha, potentially including portions of the São Francisco basin, though the type material and core distribution remain centred in the Turmalina region. Water conditions in the mid-elevation Minas Gerais stream environment are typically warm, slightly soft, and circumneutral to mildly acidic — conditions consistent with FishBase's tropical freshwater assignment for this species.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for Astyanax turmalinensis specifically. FishBase estimates a trophic level of 3.0 ± 0.4, placing it at the lower end of the secondary-consumer range, consistent with an opportunistic omnivore feeding mainly on invertebrates and small aquatic organisms with some plant or detrital material. This estimate is derived from body size and the trophic levels of closely related congeners rather than gut-content analysis.
Research on Astyanax feeding biology more broadly indicates that small characids in this genus consume a range of aquatic invertebrates — including microcrustaceans — as well as allochthonous surface items such as small insects and terrestrial detritus that fall onto slow-moving stream reaches. Post-larval Astyanax individuals have been recorded consuming on the order of 17–18 food items per gut sample in studies of closely related forms, suggesting active, continuous foraging rather than burst predation. In the aquarium, congeners of similar size are typically undemanding omnivores that accept fine-grained prepared foods, small live and frozen invertebrates, and fine plant matter.
Mating
No field observations or laboratory studies of mating behaviour in Astyanax turmalinensis are documented in the available literature. As a member of Astyanax — a genus of egg-scattering characids with open, non-guarded spawning strategies — it is expected to follow the typical characid mating pattern: male courtship involving close following and lateral display, followed by brief, synchronised egg-and-sperm release over or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or substrates. Parental care is absent in the genus.
Spawning in Astyanax congeners is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased flow following rains, and changes in photoperiod associated with the onset of the South American wet season in the Jequitinhonha region (roughly October–March). Males in many Astyanax species lack pronounced secondary sexual characters but may show slight differences in body condition during breeding season. Females tend to be somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid. These generalities are offered with the caveat that the specific mating behaviour of this narrow-range species has not been directly observed or reported.
Breeding
Astyanax turmalinensis has not been documented in captive breeding. Based on the biology of the genus, it is expected to be an egg-scatterer that deposits small, non-adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs among submerged vegetation or over a substrate, with no subsequent parental involvement — the adults would likely consume eggs given the opportunity. Incubation and larval development times are unknown for this species but are typically short in small Astyanax congeners, often 24–48 hours to hatching at tropical temperatures.
FishBase records the species as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of fewer than 15 months — a value consistent with the rapid reproductive turnover typical of small, short-lived characids. This resilience figure reflects life-history modelling rather than direct breeding observations. Should aquarists obtain specimens, the standard Astyanax breeding approach — a well-planted or mop-equipped tank, slightly raised temperature, morning light trigger, and removal of adults post-spawning — would be a reasonable starting point, though no confirmed accounts of captive breeding of A. turmalinensis appear in the hobby literature.
In the aquarium
Astyanax turmalinensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade. No husbandry accounts specific to this species appear in available records. As a small (to 2.5 in SL) Atlantic-slope Astyanax from a mid-elevation Minas Gerais stream, it would require conditions broadly similar to those used for other eastern Brazilian small tetras: warm water (approximately 72–82 °F), near-neutral pH, moderate hardness, good filtration, and a planted or at least well-decorated aquarium with subdued lighting to replicate the shaded stream conditions of its native habitat.
Like most Astyanax, it would be expected to be a peaceful to mildly nippy schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more, compatible with comparably sized co-inhabitants. Its low fishing vulnerability rating (10/100 on FishBase's scale) and the genus's generally robust constitution suggest it would not be especially demanding if correctly maintained. Its primary interest remains scientific rather than horticultural: as a range-restricted Jequitinhonha endemic it is of value to ichthyologists studying the biogeography of Atlantic-slope characids in eastern Brazil, rather than to the mainstream ornamental trade.
Conservation
Astyanax turmalinensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2022 (date recorded 7 November 2018 by FishBase) and the population trend recorded as stable. The LC assessment reflects the species' apparent tolerance of its stream environment and its high biological resilience — a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months means the population can recover quickly from moderate perturbations.
Despite the LC status, A. turmalinensis is a range-restricted species tied to the upper Rio Jequitinhonha basin, a drainage that has experienced land-use pressure from agriculture, deforestation, and small-scale mining in Minas Gerais. The Jequitinhonha valley is one of the most economically marginalised regions in Brazil, and its rivers have faced sedimentation and flow alteration from surrounding land use. The distribution-extension work documenting potential occurrence in adjacent drainages provides some reassurance that the species is not confined to a single sub-catchment, but dedicated population surveys to confirm range and abundance remain sparse. Monitoring of Jequitinhonha stream fish communities would benefit the conservation assessment of this and other narrow-range endemic characids in the region.
