Astyanax is one of the most species-rich genera in Characidae and encompasses a diverse assemblage of small to medium-sized tetras distributed across Central and South America. The genus presents persistent taxonomic challenges owing to the number of similar species and the conserved nature of many morphological characters across the group. A. validus is placed within this broad genus on the basis of its general characid characters; its specific relationships within Astyanax are not fully resolved in the available literature.

Morphology

Astyanax validus is a relatively large representative of its genus, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 6 in.
