Astyanax varzeae is a small headwater characin endemic to the Rio da Várzea drainage in the upper Rio Iguaçu basin of Paraná, Brazil, where it inhabits clear, lightly flowing streams over stone, sand, and vegetative debris. Described by Abilhoa and Duboc in 2007 from the rio São João and assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, it is naturally infrequent within its narrow range and has attracted little attention in the aquarium hobby — making it far better known to ichthyologists working the Iguaçu basin than to aquarists.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax varzeae was formally described by Vinicius Abilhoa and Luiz Fernando Duboc in 2007 in the journal Zootaxa (volume 1587, pages 43–52). The holotype (MHNCI 11688, 3.5 in SL) was collected from the rio São João, a headwater affluent of the rio da Várzea in the upper rio Iguaçu basin, state of Paraná, Brazil, at approximately 25°55′S 49°10′W. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the valid name as Astyanax varzeae Abilhoa & Duboc, 2007, with the authority unparenthesised because the species was described in Astyanax and remains there.

The species belongs to Astyanax, the largest genus in Characidae and one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics, with members spread across Central and South America from Mexico to Patagonia. Placement within the genus is retained on morphological and geographic grounds; the broad paraphyly of Astyanax sensu lato is well documented but a stable, comprehensive revision has not yet been published. Within the upper Iguaçu basin, A. varzeae represents one of several endemic or near-endemic characins associated with the headwater systems above the dramatic Iguaçu Falls, which act as a long-standing biogeographic barrier between the upper and lower portions of the basin.

Morphology

Astyanax varzeae is a slender, moderately compressed characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in (approximately 3.5 in SL) based on the holotype; FishBase records 3.5 in SL as the maximum. The body plan is typical for small Astyanax — a fusiform profile suited to active swimming in clear headwater streams, with a blunt snout, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of Characidae.

Fin-ray counts from the original description are: dorsal ii, 9 rays; anal iii–iv, 15–20 rays. These meristic details, together with details of coloration and proportion documented by Abilhoa and Duboc in the type series, distinguish A. varzeae from congeners in the same basin. Coloration in life and in preserved specimens follows the generally silvery, laterally compressed pattern common to small Astyanax, though precise colour notes beyond what the original description records are not well documented in the published literature. No sexual dimorphism was observed in the type series.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the rio da Várzea headwaters in the upper rio Iguaçu basin, Paraná, Brazil. Fieldwork associated with the original description characterised its habitat as clear headwater streams with light to moderate current, a substrate of stones and sand, and moderate accumulations of vegetative debris. This is a classic upper-basin rheophilic environment in the southern Atlantic Forest region of Brazil, characterised by cool to warm tropical temperatures, good oxygenation from current, and clear water reflecting the largely intact catchment conditions at the time of collection.

FishBase classifies A. varzeae as a tropical freshwater, benthopelagic species, indicating that it occupies both the water column and areas near the substrate. The upper Iguaçu basin above the falls is a biogeographically isolated system, and its headwater streams support a suite of small-bodied endemic fishes that have evolved in relative isolation. The IUCN notes that A. varzeae is naturally infrequent and not particularly abundant within its range, which adds ecological vulnerability to its already restricted distribution.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Astyanax varzeae has been published, and specific gut-content data are not available in the sources consulted. The species is placed within Astyanax, whose members are broadly opportunistic omnivores taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects — as well as algae, diatoms, and plant material depending on season and local food availability.

The headwater stream habitat, with its stone and sand substrate and vegetative debris, supports a benthos rich in aquatic invertebrates, and small Astyanax in similar environments typically exploit this resource alongside surface-fallen terrestrial material. In the absence of species-specific feeding data, it is reasonable to infer a generalised omnivore diet consistent with the genus and habitat, but aquarists and researchers should treat detailed dietary claims for this species with appropriate caution.

Mating

No field observations or laboratory studies of mating behaviour in Astyanax varzeae have been published. The original description notes that no sexual dimorphism was observed in the type series, which makes field identification of sexes by external characters unreliable. Like most Astyanax, the species is almost certainly a broadcast spawner with no pair bond and no parental care, spawning over suitable substrate or vegetation with eggs and sperm released simultaneously into the water column.

In Astyanax generally, males may school and pursue females during spawning events, with courtship reduced to close following and nudging rather than elaborate display. Spawning behaviour in the wild is likely tied to seasonal cues — rainfall, temperature shifts, and photoperiod changes associated with the southern Brazilian spring and early summer — though no phenological data for A. varzeae specifically are on record.

Breeding

Astyanax varzeae has not been bred in the aquarium or studied reproductively in the laboratory, and no captive-breeding account appears in the published or hobbyist literature. Based on the biology of Astyanax as a genus, the expected mode is egg-scattering open-water or substrate spawning, with small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants, algal mats, or over gravel, and no parental care whatsoever — adults will consume eggs if given the opportunity.

In congeners such as Astyanax fasciatus and related small species, fecundity is moderate to high and the eggs hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing a day or two later. Fry are typically tiny and require fine first foods. Given the species' rarity in captivity, any successful breeding would represent a meaningful contribution. The cooler to moderate water temperatures of its headwater stream habitat may be important for triggering conditioning and spawning.

In the aquarium

Astyanax varzeae is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is not a species found in the ornamental trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of the scientific collecting context. Its small maximum size of around 3.5 in SL and its presumed omnivore diet and schooling behaviour would in principle make it manageable in a species or community aquarium, but no husbandry notes exist against which to calibrate expectations.

Aquarists interested in upper Iguaçu endemics should be aware that import of wild specimens may be subject to Brazilian export regulations, and that the species' naturally low abundance and restricted range make wild collection inadvisable from a conservation standpoint. Should captive specimens become available through scientific or specialised channels, the approach for most small Astyanax would apply: a well-oxygenated aquarium with gentle to moderate current, clear water, a mixed diet of live, frozen, and prepared foods, and a school of six or more individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.

Conservation

Astyanax varzeae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment acknowledges that the species is endemic to the rio da Várzea in the upper rio Iguaçu basin of Paraná, Brazil — a restricted range — but concludes that no significant threats are currently identified sufficient to warrant a higher category of concern. The species is described as naturally infrequent within its range.

The upper Iguaçu basin has experienced pressure from agriculture, water abstraction, and urban expansion in Paraná, and the Atlantic Forest streams that feed it have been substantially modified across much of the state. Headwater specialists with limited distributions are intrinsically vulnerable to these pressures even when not immediately threatened. While the current LC assessment reflects the best available evidence, the combination of restricted range, natural rarity, and regional land-use intensification suggests that continued monitoring of the rio da Várzea headwaters and the fish communities they support is warranted.
