Astyanax venezuelae is a small, silver-bodied characid from the Orinoco river system of Venezuela and Colombia, reaching only 1.5–2 in total length and placing it among the dwarf members of one of the largest genera in the family Characidae. Described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 from the Río Torbes drainage above Táriba, it inhabits soft, mildly acidic waters of the Orinoco basin and is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern. Its compact size, peaceful disposition, and shoaling nature make it of potential interest to aquarists who seek smaller, less commonly kept Astyanax species.

Astyanax venezuelae was described by the American ichthyologist Leonard P. Schultz in 1944, with the type locality recorded as the Río Torbes approximately 1 mi above the town of Táriba in Venezuela — a tributary of the Orinoco drainage system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax venezuelae Schultz, 1944; the authority is not parenthesised, as the species has remained in the genus Astyanax since its original description.

Astyanax is one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, distributed from the southern United States through much of Central and South America. The genus sits within the diverse and taxonomically complex order Characiformes, and its internal systematics have been revised repeatedly; A. venezuelae remains a recognised species within the assemblage that ranges across lowland river systems of northern South America. The species epithet venezuelae is a straightforward Latin adjective meaning 'of Venezuela', referring to the country in which the type locality lies.

Morphology

Astyanax venezuelae is a dwarf tetra reaching approximately 1.5–2 in total length — small even by the standards of the genus. The body follows the typical Astyanax template: moderately deep, laterally compressed, and silvery, with the characteristic characid complement of a single dorsal fin, small adipose fin, and forked caudal fin. A dark lateral stripe or caudal spot — common in the genus — has not been specifically described in readily accessible literature for this species, and fine colour details may require examination of fresh or preserved specimens.

The small adult size distinguishes A. venezuelae from many of its congeners and makes it one of the more compact Astyanax in the Orinoco system. Detailed meristic data (fin-ray counts, lateral-line scale counts) were established in the original 1944 description and help separate it from sympatric relatives, but these technical characters require laboratory examination.

Habitat

Astyanax venezuelae is known from the Orinoco river system of northern South America, with records from the Río Torbes drainage in Venezuela (the type locality) and from the Río Meta basin — a major southern tributary of the Orinoco shared between Venezuela and Colombia. This range places it across the llanos and piedmont transition zones where streams descend from the Andes foothills into the broad Orinoco lowlands.

Reported water conditions from hobbyist sources indicate soft, slightly acidic to neutral water: temperatures of 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and low to moderate hardness (GH 1–7). The species is associated with sandy substrates and mid-water to open-water habitats in streams and rivers of the Orinoco basin. Like many Orinoco-system characids, it likely experiences seasonal variation in water level and chemistry tied to the pronounced wet and dry seasons of the Venezuelan llanos.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Astyanax venezuelae are not available in the published literature accessible to this account. As a member of Astyanax — a generalist omnivorous genus — it almost certainly takes a broad range of small food items: aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects that fall to the surface, zooplankton, and plant material or algae grazed opportunistically. Mating

No specific mating observations for Astyanax venezuelae have been published in accessible scientific or hobbyist literature. The reproductive biology of the genus Astyanax as a whole is well characterised, however, and A. venezuelae almost certainly follows the ancestral characid pattern: egg-scattering, open spawning with no parental care. Males pursue females in active courtship chases, and spawning occurs in the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation.

In many Orinoco-system characids, reproductive activity is linked to the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels, warming temperatures, and increased food availability cue spawning. In captivity, simulating these conditions — a slight temperature increase, a water change with slightly softer water, and abundant live or frozen food — typically stimulates egg-scattering species to spawn.

Breeding

Astyanax venezuelae is not commonly bred in captivity, and no dedicated breeding accounts appear in hobbyist literature. By analogy with other small Astyanax species, breeding is expected to involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs released in small batches during active chasing. Adults offer no parental care and will consume both eggs and newly hatched fry if left together in the same vessel.

For any aquarist attempting to breed the species, the likely requirements are: soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness) at the warmer end of the species' tolerance range; abundant fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops as spawning substrate; removal of adults after spawning; and very small first foods — infusoria or commercial micro-fry food — for the tiny fry, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. These are inferences from the broader genus and Orinoco-basin Astyanax ecology; first-hand breeding data for this specific species are absent from the literature reviewed.

In the aquarium

Astyanax venezuelae is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is not an established hobby species. Its small adult size of 1.5–2 in TL makes it well suited to mid-sized planted aquaria; being a shoaling species, a group of six or more would allow natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Water chemistry should reflect the Orinoco-system conditions documented for the species: soft to moderately soft water, pH 6.0–7.0, and a temperature range of 72–79 °F.

A planted tank with open swimming space, gentle filtration, and neutral to dark substrate would provide appropriate conditions and show off the fish's silvery colouration. Tankmates should be peaceful and of similar size — other small characids, small rasboras, or diminutive corydoras would be compatible choices. The species' behaviour is described as peaceful, diurnal, and mid-water, consistent with most small Astyanax. Any aquarist who finds this species available would be working largely without an existing hobbyist knowledge base, making careful observation and record-keeping especially valuable.

Conservation

Astyanax venezuelae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species' range across the Río Torbes and Río Meta drainages of the Orinoco system encompasses a significant extent of habitat within a large, hydrologically intact river basin. No specific threats driving population decline have been identified at a level that would elevate the category above Least Concern.

The broader Orinoco basin faces the pressures typical of lowland South American rivers — artisanal and commercial fisheries, agriculture-driven habitat modification in riparian zones, and localised pollution — but these have not been documented as posing an acute threat to this species specifically. A 2011 study of Venezuelan biogeographic provinces and protected areas recorded the species within that country's freshwater fauna. Continued monitoring of Orinoco-system fish communities remains prudent given ongoing land-use change in the Venezuelan and Colombian llanos.
