Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax villwocki was described in 1999 and is placed within the large Neotropical genus Astyanax (Baird & Girard, 1854), itself one of the most species-rich characid genera in South America. The species belongs to the Astyanax orthodus species-group, a nine-species assemblage within the broader orthodus complex that was revised comprehensively by Ruiz-C et al. in 2018 (European Journal of Taxonomy, no. 402). That revision formalised the diagnostic characters of the group and confirmed A. villwocki as a distinct species from its congeners in the upper Amazon basin.
The genus Astyanax sits within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics and one of the largest in the world. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) treats the valid name as Astyanax villwocki Zarske & Géry, 1999. The type specimen (3 in SL, catalogued as IUQ 3593) was collected from the Caquetá River in Colombia, which serves as the type locality.
Morphology
Astyanax villwocki reaches a maximum recorded size of 4.5 in standard length according to FishBase, though the type specimen measured 3 in SL. The body plan is the typical Astyanax build: moderately compressed laterally, with the blunt head, large eye, and adipose fin characteristic of the family Characidae.
The most diagnostic external feature of A. villwocki — and the defining character of the orthodus species-group to which it belongs — is a series of pinnate-shaped, chevron marks arranged along the lateral midline. These marks run from the humeral region back to the caudal peduncle, giving the fish a subtly patterned appearance that distinguishes it from the more uniform silvery members of the genus. The overall ground colour is silvery, as in most Astyanax species.
Habitat
Astyanax villwocki is a freshwater species recorded from the upper Amazon River basin, with confirmed occurrences spanning the Caquetá River drainage in Colombia and extending into the Ucayali, Beni, and Mamoré river basins in Peru and Bolivia. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies both mid-water and near-bottom zones in its river habitats.
The upper Amazon drainages where A. villwocki is found are typically characterised by warm, slightly acidic to neutral Amazonian blackwater or clearwater rivers, though water parameters for this species specifically have not been published in the available literature. Its range in the Mamoré and Beni systems places it within the Madeira River watershed, one of the major southern tributaries of the Amazon. Data on microhabitat use, depth preference, and seasonal movements remain sparse.
Feeding

Its membership in the large and generally amenable genus Astyanax suggests it would behave similarly to other small to mid-sized Astyanax species: an active, shoaling, open-water fish suited to a well-planted community aquarium with conspecifics and similarly sized peaceful tankmates.
For any Astyanax of similar size and provenance from the upper Amazon, water conditions in the mid-20s Celsius and a pH close to neutral or slightly acidic would be a reasonable baseline. Data on minimum shoal size, tank size requirements, and compatibility are absent for this specific species. Given the scarcity of records, any specimens kept in captivity would represent a genuine opportunity to document husbandry observations for the literature.
Conservation
Astyanax villwocki is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 24 April 2014. A Data Deficient designation does not imply the species is secure; rather, it reflects that the available information is insufficient to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk. For a species known from a relatively broad range across multiple upper Amazon drainages — the Caquetá, Ucayali, Beni, and Mamoré systems — the DD listing likely reflects gaps in survey coverage and taxonomic knowledge rather than demonstrable rarity.
The upper Amazon basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and changes to river hydrology, all of which affect the many poorly known characid species of the region. Better-targeted collection surveys and population data would be needed before the conservation status of A. villwocki could be revised in either direction.
