Astyanax xiru was formally described by Carlos A. S. de Lucena, Flávio C. T. Lima e Castro, and Vinicius A. Bertaco in 2013. The holotype, catalogue number MCP 19986 at the Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da PUCRS in Porto Alegre, measures 4 in standard length and was collected from the Laguna dos Patos system in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Astyanax xiru Lucena, Castro & Bertaco, 2013.
FishBase records the species under the synonym Psalidodon xiru, reflecting a proposal to split the enormous genus Astyanax on the basis of molecular and morphological evidence. That reclassification remains incompletely adopted in the primary literature and in Catalog of Fishes; the article here follows the currently accepted name Astyanax xiru. Astyanax is the largest genus in the family Characidae, with well over 150 recognised species distributed across North, Central, and South America. The rio Uruguay lineage to which A. xiru belongs falls within a southern South American species assemblage adapted to cooler, faster-flowing stream environments compared with the Amazonian core of the genus.
The specific epithet xiru (pronounced SHEE-roo) is a Guaraní word meaning 'companion' or 'friend', a reference recorded in the original description to the convivial schooling nature of the species in its native streams.
Morphology
Astyanax xiru reaches a recorded maximum of approximately 4.5 in standard length, with the size range across examined specimens spanning 2–4.5 in SL. It is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin of typical Astyanax form, with a pointed snout, a deeply forked caudal fin, and the adipose fin characteristic of the family.
The species is distinguished from close relatives by a combination of pigmentation and dental characters. It carries two humeral spots: an upper, broader blotch immediately behind the operculum, and a lower, narrower spot below it. A prominent dark lateral band runs the length of the flank from behind the humeral region to the base of the caudal fin, where it meets a distinct caudal peduncle spot. Jaw dentition provides the most reliable meristic separation: outer premaxillary teeth are pentacuspid (five cusps), inner premaxillary teeth heptacuspid (seven cusps), and the single maxillary tooth is tri- to pentacuspid. The branched anal-fin ray count falls in the range of 18–23, and the lateral line carries 37–39 pored scales. Live colouration in field conditions is silvery with a greenish or golden hue on the dorsum and the lateral band showing a metallic bluish sheen under direct light.
Habitat
Astyanax xiru inhabits small streams and minor tributaries within two major southern South American drainage systems: the Laguna dos Patos system of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and the rio Uruguay basin, including specimens from the Misiones Province of Argentina documented by Casciotta and colleagues in 2016. The Argentinean localities — arroyo Yabotí-Miní, arroyo San Juan, arroyos Fortaleza, Oveja Negra, and Trigueño in the Yabotí-Guazú tributary network, and the río Pepirí-Guazú in the upper Uruguay — lie within the subtropical Atlantic Forest biome, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot.
The species favours clear, cool-to-warm small streams with gravel or sandy substrate in areas of moderate to high canopy cover, consistent with the Atlantic Forest stream character. Trophic ecology data from a 2018 Journal of Limnology study on the Uruguay River ecoregion found A. xiru to be abundant at upstream sites, suggesting an affinity for faster-flowing, well-oxygenated headwater reaches rather than the slower, more turbid main-stem channels.
Feeding
Field data indicate that Astyanax xiru is herbivorous to omnivorous, with a marked plant component in the diet. The 2016 Casciotta et al. study and associated ecological work from the Uruguay River ecoregion characterise it as herbivorous or broadly omnivorous, consistent with the diet of many southern Astyanax species that exploit riparian plant matter, algae, and fallen fruits alongside invertebrates.
In an aquarium context, the species can be expected to accept a wide range of foods in keeping with its congeners' feeding habits: quality flake and small pellets form a practical staple, supplemented with blanched vegetable matter, spirulina-based foods, and live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Providing a varied diet maintains condition and colouration. The herbivorous tendency should be accommodated with regular vegetable offerings; soft-leaved aquarium plants may be nipped.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or mating observations for Astyanax xiru have been published. Based on the biology of the genus, the species is presumed to be a typical egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated spawner with no parental care, the reproductive mode universal in Astyanax and the broader Characidae.
Males in breeding condition likely pursue females through open water and among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged roots, where eggs are scattered and fertilised. No secondary sexual characters or courtship signalling specific to A. xiru are documented, though female Astyanax generally become visibly deeper-bodied when gravid, which may serve as a cue in mate selection as it does in related species.
Breeding
Published breeding data for Astyanax xiru in captivity are absent. The reproductive biology is inferred from the genus: Astyanax species are egg-scattering open spawners that deposit small, semi-adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or over open substrate, after which adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae. Spawning in related species is typically triggered by a slight temperature rise, a water change simulating rainfall, or simply the onset of the local photoperiod.
Aquarists wishing to breed A. xiru would follow the standard Astyanax protocol: condition adults on a varied diet, set up a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over a mesh floor, introduce a small group in the evening, and remove adults after spawning is observed. Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures. The species' subtropical distribution suggests it may tolerate or even benefit from cooler conditioning temperatures before a warm-water spawning trigger.

Astyanax xiru is not widely encountered in the ornamental fish trade as of 2026 and is primarily known to specialists and South American characin enthusiasts. Its size — potentially approaching 4.5 in SL — places it toward the larger end of the beginner-friendly tetra range, requiring an aquarium of at least 39.5–47 in in length for a proper school of six or more individuals.
As a schooling fish from cool to moderately warm subtropical streams, it is best maintained in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, though its range across both the Laguna dos Patos and Uruguay basins suggests some tolerance for water chemistry variation. Temperatures in the range of 64–79 °F are likely appropriate, with the cooler end of this range during winter rest periods not harmful. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful; the species' potential for fin-nipping noted in some Astyanax should be borne in mind when selecting companions with long, flowing fins. Robust plants, a good current, and open swimming space reflect its natural stream habitat.
Conservation
Astyanax xiru has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of June 2026, and carries no official threat category. The species is not listed under CITES. Its known range spans parts of two drainage systems — the Laguna dos Patos in Brazil and the upper rio Uruguay in Brazil and Argentina — within the subtropical Atlantic Forest, a biome that has lost more than 85 percent of its original extent and continues to face pressure from agriculture, silviculture, and urban expansion.
The Atlantic Forest stream fauna as a whole is considered among the most threatened freshwater fish assemblages in South America, and specialists have noted that many small endemic stream characins in this region are inadequately assessed relative to their actual vulnerability. The discovery of A. xiru in the Misiones Atlantic Forest streams — a region of ongoing conservation effort through protected areas such as the Yabotí Biosphere Reserve — provides some degree of habitat protection for part of its range. Continued survey work to clarify the species' full distribution and population status would be a prerequisite for any future IUCN assessment.
