Attonitus bounites was described by Richard P. Vari and Hernán Ortega in 2000. It is the sole member of the genus Attonitus, making the genus monotypic. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name as Attonitus bounites Vari & Ortega, 2000. The type specimen (holotype) is deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP), and the type locality is a tributary of the Rio Ucayali drainage in the department of Loreto, Peru.
Attonitus belongs to the vast family Characidae, which encompasses the majority of South American tetras and characins. Within that family the genus is placed among the smaller-bodied Amazonian characids, though its precise tribal affiliation within the family has not been resolved to wide consensus. The species has no established common name in either the scientific literature or the hobbyist trade, and it is largely unknown outside specialist ichthyological literature on Peruvian freshwater fauna.
Morphology
Attonitus bounites is a very small fish, with standard length under 1 in in typical specimens — placing it firmly among the micro-tetra grades of Amazonian characids. The body plan follows the slender, laterally compressed form typical of small characids that inhabit flowing water: a narrow caudal peduncle, a forked tail, and a single dorsal fin set roughly mid-body.
Detailed morphometric data beyond the size range are not available from the cache. Like other micro-characids of its ecological guild, sexual dimorphism is likely subtle at best, with females potentially fuller-bodied when ripe. This profile is consistent with tannin-stained streams draining heavily vegetated forest catchments, where leaf litter accumulates along stream margins and provides both food substrates and cover for small characids. Dissolved oxygen levels in such environments can be moderate but fluctuate, and fish tend to occupy oxygenated margins or riffles.
Feeding
In its natural habitat, Attonitus bounites is understood to feed on the detritus, small invertebrates, and algae associated with leaf-litter substrates in fast-flowing stream margins — the ecological resource base that supports a large proportion of micro-characid diversity in Amazonian headwater systems. Small crustaceans and soft-bodied invertebrates encountered while foraging through debris are likely the primary animal prey items.

Attonitus bounites has not been bred in captivity to the knowledge available in the published or hobbyist literature, and no established breeding protocol exists. By analogy with other small Amazonian characids, spawning is expected to involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a leaf-litter substrate, with adhesive eggs requiring no parental attention. Fry, once hatched, would be expected to subsist initially on infusoria and small copepods before graduating to larger foods.
Given the species' rarity in collections and its complete absence from the aquarium trade, captive breeding has not been attempted under documented conditions. Any future captive reproduction would likely succeed best in soft, acidic water reflecting the species' natural chemistry — pH 5.5 to 6.5 and temperatures around 75–79 °F — with dense plant cover or spawning mops and removal of adults after spawning to protect the eggs.
In the aquarium
Attonitus bounites is not available in the aquarium trade and is not kept as an aquarium fish in any documented capacity. Its small size, soft-water requirements, and likely delicate temperament would, in principle, make it suitable for a species-specific biotope setup designed around Amazonian headwater conditions: tannin-stained soft acidic water, dim lighting, a leaf-litter base layer, fine-leaved planting, and a tight-fitting lid given the jumping tendency of many small characids.
Should the species ever become available through scientific collection or captive propagation, it would be best maintained in groups rather than as isolated individuals, as shoaling behaviour is the norm for small characids. Tankmates, if any, would need to be similarly small and non-aggressive. For now, the species remains a subject of ichthyological interest rather than an aquarium resident.
Conservation
Attonitus bounites has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment does not imply the species is secure: its endemic range is restricted to headwater tributaries of the Ucayali system in Loreto, a region subject to ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and gold-mining activity that degrades stream water quality through sedimentation and contamination.
The monotypic status of the genus Attonitus — a single species representing an entire lineage — adds conservation significance beyond what range alone might suggest. Loss of this species would eliminate the genus entirely from Peru's fish fauna. Continued ichthyological survey work in the Ucayali headwaters and formal IUCN evaluation would help establish the species' actual population status and any trajectory of change.
