The specific epithet irisae is a patronym honouring Iris Margot Samanez Valer, a limnologist at the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM) in Lima, Peru, where she headed the Department of Limnology. The ETYFish Project confirms this eponymy and the Peruvian institutional context. The genus name Attonitus derives from the Latin word for 'thunderstruck' or 'stunned', an allusion whose precise intent was not elaborated in the original description but which fits the genus's compact, dart-shaped body plan common in small characids.
