Taxonomy & naming
Attonitus ephimeros was described by Richard P. Vari and Hernán Ortega in 2000, in a paper establishing the new genus Attonitus within the order Ostariophysi. The paper, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 11, number 2), simultaneously erected the genus and described three species, of which A. ephimeros is one. The type locality is the Picha River at Puerto Huallana, Mapichiriato Ravine, coordinates approximately 11°50′S, 73°20′W, in the Urubamba River basin, La Convencion Province, Cusco Department, Peru. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Attonitus ephimeros Vari & Ortega, 2000.
Within Attonitus, the species is distinguished from its congener A. irisae by the absence of a dark humeral mark, and from A. bounites by the shape of the dark pigmentation band above the anal-fin base: in A. ephimeros this band is widest over the second and third branched anal rays and has a rounded anterior margin, rather than the sharper or differently proportioned band seen in A. bounites. The genus itself is notable among small characiforms for exhibiting marked sexual dimorphism, a characteristic highlighted in the original description. Fin counts reported from FishBase give a dorsal fin of 2 unbranched plus 8 branched rays, and an anal fin of 3 unbranched plus 14–17 (typically 15–16) branched rays.
Morphology
Attonitus ephimeros is a slender, small-bodied characiform reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in; specimens from the Alto Ucayali region have been collected at around 2 in SL. The body form is elongated and relatively shallow in depth — well suited to the benthopelagic habit of a fish that forages near the substrate in flowing water.
The most diagnostic external features are the dark pigmentation pattern on the body above the anal-fin base, which is broadest over the second and third branched anal rays and carries a distinctively rounded anterior margin, and the absence of any dark blotch at the humeral region immediately behind the gill cover. Both characters distinguish A. ephimeros from related species in the genus. The genus Attonitus is also characterised by sexual dimorphism notable for characters among small characiforms; the precise nature of the dimorphism — which may involve fin development, body proportions, or coloration — was detailed in Vari and Ortega's original description.
Habitat
Attonitus ephimeros occurs in the Urubamba and Ucayali river basins of Peruvian Amazonia, at elevations of approximately 984–1640 ft above sea level. Within these drainages, the species has been confirmed from the Picha River (type locality in the Urubamba basin) and from tributaries of the lower Río Urubamba, as well as from the Aguaytia and Pachitea rivers in the Ucayali basin. The range falls within the interior upland foothills of the eastern Andes, a zone of moderate elevation that supports both clear-water and black-water streams.
The IUCN assessment characterises the habitat as tropical benthopelagic freshwater, occurring in clear and black-water streams near the banks in shallow water. This near-shore, shallow position is consistent with the benthopelagic designation and with a small fish that forages near the substrate. Part of the species' range falls within the Megantoni National Sanctuary, which provides a degree of formal habitat protection. The broader biogeographic region is classified as the Ucayali River system, which drains into the Amazon main stem and represents a centre of Neotropical fish diversity.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study specific to Attonitus ephimeros has been published. As a benthopelagic characiform of small Amazonian streams, it most likely feeds on small invertebrates taken from or near the substrate — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar items — supplemented opportunistically by whatever organic material drifts through its near-shore foraging zone.
In the aquarium, small-bodied characiforms from similar microhabitats typically accept a range of prepared and live foods once settled: micro-pellets, fine flake, and live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms suit the fish's size. As with most wild-caught Neotropical tetras, conditioning on live and frozen foods is generally necessary to bring specimens into breeding condition.
Mating
The genus Attonitus is characterised by sexual dimorphism unusual among similarly sized characiforms, as noted in the original description by Vari and Ortega. This implies a reproductive system in which males and females adopt different roles or body forms, likely connected to courtship or competition. No direct observation of wild mating behaviour in A. ephimeros has been published.
By analogy with other small characiforms of similar size and microhabitat, mating likely involves active chasing and lateral displays by the male, with spawning triggered by environmental cues such as water temperature and photoperiod. Eggs in comparable species are typically adhesive or semi-adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited on submerged substrates, and the pair offers no parental care after spawning.
Breeding
No captive breeding account specific to Attonitus ephimeros is available in the published literature or hobby sources. The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and has not been established in captive populations at any scale.
In the absence of species-specific data, the general approach used for small, wild-caught Neotropical tetras applies: a separate, dimly lit breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and conditioned adults. Eggs in the broader Characidae are typically scattered among vegetation, are adhesive or semi-adhesive, and receive no parental care; the adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry of small characiforms typically require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Attonitus ephimeros is not an established aquarium fish. Its small size — under 2 in — and benthopelagic habit suggest it would be suited to a quiet, well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, a soft substrate, and gentle flow, conditions that replicate its natural stream-margin habitat in the Peruvian foothills.
Water parameters drawn from its natural range point toward moderately warm, soft to moderately soft water in the upper-subtropical to tropical range. Any specimens entering the hobby would almost certainly be wild-caught, requiring careful acclimatisation. Given its rarity in trade and the limited captive experience with the genus, A. ephimeros is a specialist's fish rather than a beginner's, and its continued absence from the commercial trade means there is little practical husbandry guidance to draw on.
Conservation
Attonitus ephimeros is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2016 and originally conducted in 2014. The justification rests on a combination of factors: the species has a reasonably wide distribution across the Urubamba and Ucayali basins, its population is presumed stable, and no major threats have been identified. A key factor in its favour is the presence of part of its range within the Megantoni National Sanctuary, which provides formal habitat protection.
The Peruvian Amazon foothills where this species occurs are subject to the broader pressures affecting Amazonian biodiversity — deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and infrastructure development in the Andean piedmont — but these have not been evaluated as rising to the level of a significant threat to A. ephimeros specifically. The species' benthopelagic, near-shore stream habitat does make it potentially sensitive to siltation and catchment disturbance, but data on population trends remain sparse. Ongoing monitoring of the Ucayali and Urubamba fish communities would be necessary to detect any future decline.
