Taxonomy & naming
Bathyaethiops atercrinis was described by Vital Mamonekene and Melanie L.J. Stiassny in 2012, published in Copeia 2012(3):478–483. The description was notable for extending the genus Bathyaethiops — previously known only from the Congo River basin — into the Lower Guinean Ichthyofaunal Province, a biogeographically distinct region to the west. The holotype, AMNH 253501, is a male of 1.5 in standard length deposited at the American Museum of Natural History; paratypes were distributed to AMNH, CUMV, MRAC, and ZSM.
The genus Bathyaethiops belongs to the family Alestidae, the African characins or African tetras, and within that family it is placed in the subfamily Clupeocharacinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Bathyaethiops atercrinis Mamonekene & Stiassny, 2012, confirmed still valid as of Moritz & Schliewen 2016. The species is distinguished from its congeners most readily by scale counts — 21–24 lateral-line scales versus 28–42 in related species — and by the males' unique anal-fin and caudal-peduncle pigmentation.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded length of 1.5 in standard length, making B. atercrinis a genuinely small fish even by tetra standards. Meristic counts are: dorsal soft rays 9–10, anal soft rays 18–20, and vertebrae 33–35. The lateral-line scale count of 21–24 is notably lower than in other Bathyaethiops and serves as a key diagnostic character.
The most striking morphological feature is a pronounced sexual dichromatism. Males develop a distinctive black blotch on the anal fin and on the caudal peduncle; females are entirely without this marking and present a plainer overall coloration. This level of fin-based color dimorphism is unusual in the genus and was cited in the original description as one of the characters separating B. atercrinis from all known congeners.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Lékoumou River at the bridge near 3°22'49.30"S, 13°15'55.01"E in Lékoumou Province, Republic of Congo — a small tributary of the Louessé River within the Kouilou-Niari (Nairi) basin. Collection records place specimens at approximately 3 ft depth along river banks over a substrate of sand and mud, under a dense riparian fringe of lianas and epiphytic orchids that creates deep shade over the water's edge. Current at the collection site is described as moderately rapid.
Water conditions recorded at the time of collection were cool by African lowland standards: temperatures in the shallows measured 70–73 °F, and pH was 7.6, indicating slightly alkaline, likely moderately hard water consistent with the substrate geology of the region. The combination of a single known locality, restricted microhabitat (shaded river-bank margins), and a narrow river tributary makes this species' known range very small.
Feeding
No published diet studies specific to Bathyaethiops atercrinis have been located. Based on the ecology of the genus and the family Alestidae more broadly, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling to the water surface — together with algae, detritus, and plant material at the microhabitat scale.
In an aquarium setting, small African tetras of this size and family are typically undemanding feeders that accept quality micro-pellets, crushed flake, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and Cyclops. Data on this species specifically is sparse; aquarists keeping it should treat it as a small, insectivore-leaning omnivore and offer a varied diet.
Mating
No spawning observations for Bathyaethiops atercrinis have been published. As an alestid characin, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, consistent with the reproductive mode characteristic of the family. Males, which bear the distinctive black anal-fin and caudal-peduncle blotch, likely use this coloration in courtship and male–male competition, mirroring the function of fin pigmentation in other sexually dimorphic characins.
Spawning is presumed to involve adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged riparian vegetation, following the pattern typical of small alestids. In the wild, the dense bank-side vegetation of lianas and epiphytic plants overhanging the substrate would provide ready spawning cover. No clutch-size or spawning-season data exist for this species.
Breeding
Bathyaethiops atercrinis has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no breeding accounts appear in the available literature or hobby sources. Based on family-level biology, breeding can be expected to follow the alestid pattern: egg-scattering among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, adhesive eggs requiring no parental care, and adults that should be removed after spawning to prevent predation of eggs and fry.
For aquarists who acquire the species, soft, slightly acid-to-neutral water (reflecting the species' mild field pH of 7.6) in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would be a reasonable conditioning target. Given the species' rarity in the hobby and limited availability, captive-breeding success and detailed records would be a meaningful contribution to knowledge of the species.
In the aquarium
Bathyaethiops atercrinis is extremely rare in the aquarium trade and has been kept by very few hobbyists. Based on its size (under 1.5 in SL), water chemistry (pH 7.6, temperatures 70–73 °F in the wild), and shaded microhabitat, it would suit a small, heavily planted or thicketed species tank with subdued lighting and moderate flow. A group of six or more individuals would best reflect its presumed schooling social behaviour and allow the male's anal-fin coloration to be observed in context.
Tankmates, if any, should be small, non-aggressive species of similar size. Water should be kept cool relative to tropical norms — the 70–73 °F field readings suggest it may not thrive at the 79–82 °F standard for many community tetras — and filtered through peat or leaf litter to approximate soft, slightly tannin-stained conditions similar to shaded riparian habitats. Given how little is known, conservative husbandry that mimics the collection site is the best available guidance.
Conservation
Bathyaethiops atercrinis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026. Its conservation situation is, however, inherently concerning: the species is known from a single river crossing — the Lékoumou River at one bridge locality — in a restricted drainage of the Republic of Congo. A species with such a narrow, single-point known distribution is by definition vulnerable to any localised event affecting that site, whether land clearance, pollution, altered hydrology, or unsustainable collection.
The Kouilou-Niari basin and its tributaries are subject to habitat pressures typical of equatorial Africa, including agricultural expansion and forestry. No targeted surveys for this species beyond the original 2012 collection have been reported in the accessible literature, so whether additional populations exist elsewhere in the basin is unknown. Given the very small known range, this species warrants formal assessment under IUCN criteria; it could plausibly qualify for a threatened category based on restricted range alone.
