Bathyaethiops baka is a tiny, cryptically marked African tetra reaching no more than 1 in standard length, described in 2016 from the Ngoko River of southeastern Cameroon — a remote, undisturbed rainforest tributary of the Congo basin. Barely known in the aquarium hobby and not yet assessed by the IUCN, it inhabits blackwater channels over fine sediments and organic detritus in forest streams of startlingly low conductivity, making it one of the smallest representatives of the family Alestidae.

Taxonomy & naming

Bathyaethiops baka was described by Moritz and Schliewen in 2016 in a paper published in Zootaxa (4117[4]: 476–490) presenting two new species of Bathyaethiops from the Congo basin. The type locality is the Ngoko River, Cameroon, in reaches from below Nki falls to Ndongo village. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Bathyaethiops baka Moritz & Schliewen, 2016.

The genus Bathyaethiops belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras — a family of characiform fishes distributed across tropical Africa and most familiar to aquarists through species such as the Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the cardinal tetra's African counterpart, the red-eye tetra. Within Alestidae, Bathyaethiops is a small genus of dwarf species united by their reduced squamation and preference for the soft, acidic lowland forest waters of the Congo system. Bathyaethiops baka is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of incomplete squamation with variably reduced scale cover, a conspicuous large humeral spot, and the absence of dark vertical bars along the midlateral flanks.

Morphology

Bathyaethiops baka is a dwarf species; the largest specimen measured in the original description reached 1 in standard length, making it one of the smallest alestids. The body form is typical of small characiforms — laterally compressed, with a moderately deep profile — but the reduced squamation sets the genus apart: scale cover is incomplete and variably developed along the flanks, and pre-dorsal scales are absent.

The most diagnostically useful external feature is the large humeral spot, a dark blotch behind the operculum that is more pronounced than in related Bathyaethiops species and is not interrupted by vertical barring on the flanks. The overall coloration in life is not fully documented in the available literature, but the genus name and the informal common name 'moon tetra' (applied loosely to Bathyaethiops as a whole) suggest pale, reflective body flanks typical of the group. As with other Bathyaethiops, sexual dimorphism has not been formally described.

Habitat

Bathyaethiops baka is known from the Ngoko River in southeastern Cameroon. The Ngoko is the upper course of the Sangha River, itself a tributary of the middle Congo River basin; it drains a watershed of approximately 67,0 mi² of strictly undisturbed lowland rainforest — one of the largest remaining intact forest catchments in central Africa. The collecting sites in the original description include the main river channel, where fish were found near riparian vegetation over substrates of fine particles and organic material.

Water chemistry recorded at the type locality is notably soft and near-neutral to slightly acidic: pH 7.08, conductivity 23 µS/cm, and temperature 82 °F (81.5 °F). FishBase records a minimum temperature of 82 °F. These are the conditions of an equatorial lowland forest river — warm, extremely dilute, and rich in dissolved organic material from leaf litter and wood — rather than the harder or more alkaline waters of open savannah drainages. The low conductivity (23 µS/cm) places the Ngoko among the most chemically dilute rivers in the Congo system.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Bathyaethiops baka has been published. Based on its microhabitat — near riparian vegetation over fine organic sediments in a forest river — and on the broader feeding ecology of small alestids, it almost certainly takes small invertebrates including aquatic insect larvae and microcrustaceans, along with any terrestrial invertebrates that fall to the water surface from overhanging vegetation.

In the aquarium, related dwarf alestids and comparably sized characins generally accept small live and frozen foods (Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia) and finely crushed dry foods. Given the extremely small adult size of B. baka, first foods and ongoing diet would need to be scaled accordingly, with micro-organisms and newly hatched brine shrimp forming the backbone of any captive feeding programme.

Mating

No observations of spawning behaviour in Bathyaethiops baka have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of other small African characins in the family Alestidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the reproductive mode universal among alestids and the great majority of characiforms generally.

In this mode, males pursue females and spawning occurs over fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or other suitable substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited in small batches. No information on courtship displays, male–female size differences, or seasonal spawning cues specific to this species has been documented in the literature to date.

Breeding

Breeding of Bathyaethiops baka in captivity has not been documented in the published or hobbyist literature available at the time of writing. The species was described scientifically only in 2016 and remains extremely rare in the trade; captive-bred specimens are not known to be commercially available.

Based on the biology of the genus and of comparable small alestids, the reproductive mode would be expected to be egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults likely to consume their own eggs if not separated. Rearing of the tiny fry would require appropriately scaled first foods. The soft, warm, low-conductivity water of the type locality (pH ~7.1, conductivity 23 µS/cm, temperature ~82 °F) would represent a logical starting point for any captive breeding attempt.

In the aquarium

Bathyaethiops baka is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It has not appeared in the commercial ornamental trade, and no husbandry accounts from aquarists are on record. Any fish in captivity would represent wild-caught specimens obtained through scientific or specialist channels.

As a species from an extremely soft, warm, low-conductivity rainforest river, it would require carefully replicated water conditions — very low mineral content, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, temperatures around 81–82 °F (81–82 °F), and dim, filtered light to simulate the tannin-stained forest river environment. Given its tiny adult size (under 1 in SL), it would be suitable only for a species tank or a very fine-scaled nano biotope with equally small and peaceful tankmates. The sparse husbandry knowledge available makes it a species for experienced specialist keepers rather than general community aquaria.

Conservation

Bathyaethiops baka has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The Ngoko River watershed, where all known specimens originate, is described as a strictly undisturbed rainforest drainage of approximately 67,0 mi² — one of the most ecologically intact large river systems in central Africa. In that sense, the immediate habitat of B. baka is in considerably better condition than that of many tropical freshwater fishes.

However, the species is known from a restricted geographic range, and its extremely small known distribution — confined to a section of the Ngoko between Nki falls and Ndongo village — means that any future habitat degradation in that corridor could have outsized consequences. Logging pressure and associated river sedimentation are ongoing concerns in the Congo basin forests of southeastern Cameroon. Formal IUCN assessment and population survey work would be the natural next steps in understanding the conservation needs of this newly described species.
