Taxonomy & naming
Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1925. The species is placed in the genus Bathyaethiops, a small alestid genus endemic to central African river systems, within the family Alestidae — the African characins. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name with a parenthetical authority, reflecting that the species was originally described in a different genus before its placement in Bathyaethiops was established.
The genus name combines the Greek bathys (deep) with Aethiops, a classical reference to Africa broadly, echoing the naming conventions of the wider alestid group. The specific epithet caudomaculatus derives from the Latin cauda (tail) and maculatus (spotted), directly describing the dark caudal spot that is one of the species' most consistent identifying marks. In the hobby the fish is widely known as the African moon tetra, a name that reflects both its geographic origin and its lustrous, silvery body.
Morphology
Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus is a slender, laterally compressed characin reaching a maximum total length of around 3 in. The body is predominantly silver, with a finish that catches light strongly in open water — a typical adaptation for a pelagic schooling fish. The most diagnostic feature is the dark spot at the base of the caudal fin, which is present in both sexes and gives the species its epithet.
Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle: females are generally rounder in the abdomen, particularly when gravid, and tend to be slightly larger-bodied than males of equivalent age. Males may show a smaller or less prominent spot beneath the dorsal fin compared to females. The fins are generally clear to slightly tinted. Overall the species has the streamlined, open-water build of a fish that spends much of its life in the water column rather than among dense vegetation.
Habitat
The African moon tetra is a freshwater pelagic species distributed across a broad arc of the Congo basin. Its range includes Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool), Lake Tumba, the Sangha River drainage spanning the Congo Republic and Cameroon, the middle Congo, the lower Lomami, the Itimbiri, and the lower Lualaba in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The IUCN also records a more recent observation near Inga on the lower Congo.
Within these systems it occupies open, slower-moving to still waters rather than swift rapids or heavily vegetated shallows. Water parameters recorded for the species span a moderate range: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 6.3–7.3, and hardness around 5–12 dH — conditions typical of the central Congo basin's gently acidic to neutral rivers and lake margins. As a commercially harvested species it is caught in substantial numbers for the ornamental trade, suggesting it is locally abundant in at least parts of its range.
Feeding
Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus is an omnivore. In the wild, pelagic open-water characins of its size typically feed on small invertebrates — insect larvae, zooplankton, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface — alongside whatever plant material and particulates are available in the water column.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to prepared foods and accepts quality flake and small pellets as a staple. Supplementing the diet with live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp improves condition and brings fish into breeding readiness. As with most active schooling tetras, offering a variety of food types rather than a single staple keeps the fish in better long-term health and supports the vibrant silver sheen that makes the species attractive.
Mating
Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, following the open-water or plant-spawning reproductive strategy typical of alestid and characin fish generally. Males court females with displays of activity and positioning in the water column; females in breeding condition develop a noticeably rounder abdomen.
Spawning is most likely triggered by a combination of good conditioning, slightly raised temperature, and the presence of suitable spawning substrate — fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops serve as egg-deposition sites in captivity. Eggs are adhesive and are scattered among the spawning medium rather than deposited in a guarded nest. Adults do not tend the eggs and will consume them if given the opportunity.
Breeding
In the aquarium, breeding Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus follows the standard approach for egg-scattering open-water tetras. A conditioned group or pair is placed in a bare or lightly planted breeding tank with fine-leaved vegetation or Java moss and a spawning mop; soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the lower part of the species' temperature range (around 75–79 °F) is appropriate.
After spawning, adults should be removed promptly to prevent egg predation. The eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures. Fry are initially tiny and require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered flake as they grow. The species is not widely bred in significant numbers by hobbyists compared to some other African tetras, but the reproductive biology is straightforward and follows well-documented characin practice.
In the aquarium
The African moon tetra is best kept in a school of six or more individuals. As a pelagic, open-water species it is most comfortable and most visually impressive when given space to swim freely; a tank of 35.5 in or more in length suits a group well. The species is peaceful and mixes readily with other small, similarly sized fish that share compatible water requirements.
Water conditions should reflect the species' Congo basin origins: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and moderate softness (GH 5–12) are all acceptable. The species does not require extreme soft-water conditions but does best away from very hard or alkaline water. Good filtration and regular water changes maintain the water quality that keeps schooling characins healthy. A planted tank with open central swimming space and subdued to moderate lighting shows the silver body to good effect. The fish is commercially available through the ornamental trade and is not difficult to keep once acclimatised, making it accessible to intermediate-level aquarists.
Conservation
Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 16 February 2009. The species has a broad distribution across the central Congo basin — spanning Pool Malebo, Lake Tumba, and multiple major river drainages — and is sufficiently abundant to support commercial harvest for the ornamental fish trade.
The IUCN notes that commercial harvesting for the aquarium trade is an active pressure on the species, though this has not yet driven a decline sufficient to warrant a higher threat category given the species' range size and apparent abundance. Population trend is listed as unknown. No specific conservation actions are recorded. Continued monitoring of harvest levels and population status would be prudent for any species subject to sustained commercial collection, even one currently classified as Least Concern.
