Brachypetersius gabonensis is a small, schooling alestid endemic to the river basins of Gabon, where it inhabits the Ogowe and Como drainages of the Lower Guinea biodiversity zone. Reaching around 3 in standard length, the species is best identified by its conspicuous dark mid-lateral band that runs from the opercular margin to the caudal fin and the oval humeral blotch above the pectoral fins — markings it shares with close relatives in the genus but in a configuration that sets it apart from the more frequently encountered Congo-basin species. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2009, it remains little known in the aquarium hobby outside specialist circles.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachypetersius gabonensis was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967. The type locality is Diala, on the Lambaréné–Mouila road in Gabon, placing the species firmly within the Lower Guinea province — the coastal-forest river systems that drain westward from the Congo watershed into the Atlantic between Cameroon and the Congo Republic. The valid name is recorded by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & Fong) as Brachypetersius gabonensis Poll, 1967 and the species remains assigned to the family Alestidae, the African characins.

The genus Brachypetersius belongs to the tribe Petersiini within Alestidae, a group of small, laterally compressed schooling fishes distributed across Atlantic coastal rivers and the Congo basin. Morphological and more recent phylogenomic work places B. gabonensis as most closely related to B. huloti, a Congo-basin species, but the two differ in several characters: in B. gabonensis the dark lateral band extends onto the caudal fin, the humeral spot is consistently present, and transverse scale counts above the lateral line are lower (4.5 rows versus 6.5 in B. huloti). The specific epithet gabonensis is a Latinised toponym meaning 'of Gabon', referring to the country that encompasses the known range.

Morphology

Brachypetersius gabonensis is a small, fusiform alestid reaching a maximum of 3 in (3 in) standard length. Body depth fits 2.8–3.25 times in standard length, and head length 3.5–3.75 times, giving the fish a moderately elongate, somewhat compressed profile typical of schooling open-water characins in the genus. The anal fin has three spines and 18–19 (or 21–22 in some meristic counts across sources) branched rays; 25–28 scales lie along the lateral line; and approximately 4.5 scale rows cross between the lateral line and the dorsal fin origin.

The most diagnostic feature in life is the pigmentation pattern: a bold blackish to dark brown band runs continuously from the opercular margin to the base of the caudal fin, flanked above and below by the pale silvery flank. Above and just posterior to the pectoral fins, a distinct oval humeral blotch punctuates this band. This combination — a complete lateral band plus a discrete humeral spot — readily distinguishes B. gabonensis from most sympatric alestids. Colouration is otherwise modest: the dorsal surface is darker, the venter pale, and the fins are largely unpigmented or faintly tinted.

Habitat

Brachypetersius gabonensis is a Lower Guinea endemic, known from the Ogowe (Ogooué) and Como River basins in Gabon. Both river systems are large, forest-lined systems draining the interior plateau westward to the Atlantic coast. The Ogowe is Gabon's principal river and supports a rich ichthyofauna; the Como flows north to drain near Libreville. The species is classified as a tropical freshwater fish with a pelagic or mid-water lifestyle, consistent with the active, schooling habits of the tribe Petersiini.

Detailed microhabitat data for B. gabonensis are sparse in the published literature. By analogy with related species and the character of the river basins it inhabits, it likely occupies main-channel and larger tributary environments, schooling in open water over substrates of sand or gravel with some marginal forest cover. Water temperatures in lowland Gabonese rivers generally fall in the range of 73–81 °F, and the rivers are typically soft to moderately mineralised and slightly acidic to neutral, consistent with the humid-forest catchments from which they drain. No documented population threats have been identified and no major habitat degradation is recorded within its range.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies for Brachypetersius gabonensis appear in the accessible literature. As a member of the Alestidae with a pelagic, schooling habit, it can be inferred to be an opportunistic carnivore or omnivore in the manner of most small petersiine alestids, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton — along with surface insects and, possibly, fine plant matter or detritus.

In captivity, small alestids of this type generally accept a varied diet including fine-grade flake and micro-pellets, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm, and occasional vegetable supplement. Good colour and condition in these fishes typically reflect diet quality; a varied regimen with live or frozen invertebrate food is preferable to flake alone.

Mating

No species-specific observations of courtship behaviour in Brachypetersius gabonensis are documented in the literature. Within Alestidae, and in small schooling characins broadly, the mating system is typically egg-scattering open spawning with no pair bond and no parental care. Males in breeding condition often exhibit intensified colouration or fin extension and pursue females through vegetation or open water, with spawning occurring in group aggregations rather than isolated pairs.

For genus-level context, petersiine alestids are generally intermittent or prolonged spawners in the wild, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, root masses, or over soft substrates. Whether B. gabonensis spawns preferentially over vegetation or in open water is not recorded. Breeders working with closely related Alestidae species note that spawning activity is most intense in the early morning and is stimulated by water changes and gradual temperature variation.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Brachypetersius gabonensis are available in the mainstream hobby literature, and the species is rarely if ever encountered in the trade. Based on the biology of congeners and of the Alestidae more broadly, breeding would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern: adhesive eggs released individually or in small numbers among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, no parental care, and adults that readily consume their own eggs if not separated.

Fertilised eggs in small African alestids typically hatch within 24–72 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming after a further 2–4 days. First foods would need to be very small — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry diets — progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Without specific data for this species, these are general guidelines from closely related taxa and should be treated as starting points rather than confirmed parameters.

In the aquarium

Brachypetersius gabonensis is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby and would be an unusual acquisition even for specialist alestid keepers. Were it available, care requirements would be expected to align with those of the small petersiine alestids generally: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with good water flow, soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral water, and temperatures in the 73–81 °F range reflecting its west-central African forest-river origins.

As a schooling pelagic species, it would require a group of at least six individuals to express natural behaviour and reduce inter-fish stress. The tank should offer open swimming space in the mid-water column with some cover at the margins — floating plants, fine-leaved stem plants, or driftwood — and gentle to moderate flow. Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful, and unlikely to outcompete the fish at feeding; other small west African characins, calm riverine barbs, and smaller West African dwarf cichlids kept in appropriate water conditions would be compatible in principle. Data on captive longevity and specific aquarium performance are not available.

Conservation

Brachypetersius gabonensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 16 February 2009. The assessment notes that the species is widespread within its region and that no major threats are documented within its range in Gabon. The fish has a restricted overall range — two river basins within a single country — but the Ogowe and Como systems are large, largely intact forest rivers, and the Lower Guinea biodiversity zone is not currently subject to the same intensity of human pressure as some other parts of tropical Africa.

The species is not known to be commercially collected for the aquarium trade, and its small size and limited hobby presence mean that collection pressure is not a concern. Longer-term threats to the equatorial forest rivers of Gabon, including expanding extractive industry, logging, and agricultural conversion in the catchments, have the potential to degrade water quality and streamside habitat over future decades, though no such impact on this species specifically has been assessed. No captive populations are maintained as a conservation measure.
