Brachypetersius cadwaladeri is a small African tetra reaching just 1.5 in in total length, native to the upper Congo basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Known from the upper Lulua and upper Lomami river systems and right-bank tributaries of the Lualaba, it inhabits the freshwater interior of Central Africa and is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. It belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — and its species epithet honours Charles Meigs Biddle Cadwalader, a prominent American philanthropist and director of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.

It is placed within the family Alestidae, the African characiform fishes (African tetras), and the name is treated as valid by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences), the authoritative reference for fish nomenclature. Because Fowler described the species in a genus other than Brachypetersius, the authority is given in parentheses as (Fowler, 1930), indicating a subsequent generic transfer. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) both confirm the name as accepted.

The genus Brachypetersius is a small genus of African tetras within Alestidae. The generic name combines the Greek brachys, meaning short, with the name Peters — a reference to the naturalist Wilhelm Carl Hartwig Peters — giving the sense of a small or short Peters-like fish. D. Paugy's 1984 treatment of Characidae in the Check-list of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa (CLOFFA) is a primary reference for the taxonomy and African distribution of the group.

A Lake Tanganyika record for this species has been reported but remains unconfirmed; the species is principally known from the Kasai and upper Congo drainages of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
