Brachypetersius cadwaladeri was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1930. It is placed within the family Alestidae, the African characiform fishes (African tetras), and the name is treated as valid by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences), the authoritative reference for fish nomenclature. Because Fowler described the species in a genus other than Brachypetersius, the authority is given in parentheses as (Fowler, 1930), indicating a subsequent generic transfer. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) both confirm the name as accepted.
The genus Brachypetersius is a small genus of African tetras within Alestidae. The generic name combines the Greek brachys, meaning short, with the name Peters — a reference to the naturalist Wilhelm Carl Hartwig Peters — giving the sense of a small or short Peters-like fish.
