Brachypetersius huloti is a small African characin of the Congo Basin, reaching about 3.5 in in standard length and distinguished among its relatives by a bold, continuous mid-lateral black band that runs from head to tail and is noticeably darker in males. Originally described from the Lomboma River at Yangambi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it is now known from the lower and middle Congo River and several major tributaries including the Fulakari headwaters, the Lukenie, and the Lomami, making it one of the more widespread members of its genus. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2009, recognising that no major range-wide threats are present.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachypetersius huloti was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1954. The type locality is Yangambi on the Lomboma River, a tributary of the Congo in what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo. The species belongs to the tribe Petersiini within the family Alestidae, the African tetras — a radiation of characiform fishes confined to sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile.

The genus Brachypetersius comprises a handful of small, laterally compressed species that share the mid-lateral band and the distinctive dental formula characteristic of the tribe. Brachypetersius huloti is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of 5½ transverse scale rows above the lateral line and an anal fin count of III,19–22, characters recorded in the Fauna Africana (Royal Museum for Central Africa) treatment of the genus. The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Brachypetersius huloti (Poll, 1954), with parenthetical authority because Poll originally placed it in a different genus.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum of approximately 3.5 in standard length (FishBase lists 3 in TL for the species, consistent with the Fauna Africana upper figure when converting SL to TL). The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, typical of the Petersiini. The most striking feature is the mid-lateral black band, a wide, uninterrupted stripe running from the snout region to the caudal peduncle; this band is distinctly darker and more prominent in males than in females, providing a reliable if subtle sexual indicator.

The dental formula recorded for the species is 4/8 upper jaw and 8/2 lower jaw, a combination documented in the Royal Museum for Central Africa reference. The anal fin formula of III,19–22 and the 5½ transverse scale rows above the lateral line are the key meristic characters that separate B. huloti from other Brachypetersius. Overall body coloration is otherwise silvery, with the fins largely hyaline.

Habitat

Brachypetersius huloti inhabits the freshwater systems of the central Congo Basin. Confirmed localities include the Fulakari River headwaters, the lower and middle Congo River, the Lukenie, and the Lomami drainages in both the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. FishBase classifies the species as pelagic in freshwater, suggesting it occupies open-water zones of rivers and associated tributary channels rather than dense vegetation or the benthos.

Recorded water parameters from the Congo Basin localities are a temperature range of 72–77 °F (72–77 °F) and a pH of 6.0–7.0, reflecting the soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of many Congo tributaries. The wide distribution across the central and lower Congo network — one of the largest river systems in the world — underpins the species' Least Concern conservation status.

Feeding

The natural diet of Brachypetersius huloti has not been studied in detail; as a member of the Alestidae it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic particles in the water column in a manner typical of Congo Basin characins of similar size.

In the aquarium, related Brachypetersius species accept a range of prepared foods including good-quality flake and micro-pellets, supplemented with small frozen and live items such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and newly hatched brine shrimp. A varied diet supports good colour and condition. The species is small enough that food particle size should be kept appropriately small.

Mating

No detailed field or laboratory study of reproductive behaviour in Brachypetersius huloti has been published, but the tribe Petersiini are egg-scattering characins and the species is expected to follow that pattern. Males, identifiable by their more pronounced mid-lateral band, presumably establish courtship hierarchies and display to females in open water or near fine-leaved vegetation.

As is typical of African tetras, spawning is likely triggered or intensified by water changes mimicking the onset of rains, with pairs or small groups driving actively before eggs are scattered among plants or over the substrate. No parental care is reported or expected in this group.

Breeding

Brachypetersius huloti is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and documented captive breeding accounts are limited. Based on the biology of closely related African tetras in the Petersiini, the species would be expected to scatter small, semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate, with both parents ignoring the eggs thereafter.

Breeders attempting this species would follow the protocol used for allied African tetras: a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water around 75–79 °F, bunches of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and conditioning on live and frozen foods. After spawning, adults should be removed to prevent predation on the eggs. Incubation times for comparable species are typically in the range of 24–48 hours, with fry free-swimming a few days later and requiring infusoria or commercial microfoods initially.

In the aquarium

Brachypetersius huloti is seldom available in the trade and would be of most interest to specialist keepers of African characins or Alestidae. It is a small schooling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more to allow natural social behaviour and reduce individual stress. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in or longer, furnished with open swimming space in the midwater zone and some fine-leaved plants or other structure, suits the species well.

Water chemistry should reflect the Congo Basin origin: soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 72–77 °F (72–77 °F). Regular partial water changes help maintain the quality that Congo fish require. Peaceful tankmates of similar size — other small African tetras, Congo tetras, or small West African dwarf cichlids — make good companions. The male's darker mid-lateral band is more vivid in good condition and under appropriate lighting, making condition and water quality the key variables for showing the fish at its best.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Brachypetersius huloti as Least Concern in 2009 (assessment by T. Moelants, published 2009-02-16). The assessment notes that the species is widespread across Central Africa and faces no major range-wide threats at the time of assessment. Its occurrence across the lower and middle Congo River and multiple large tributaries provides a degree of natural resilience absent in narrowly endemic Congo Basin species.

The central Congo River system, while broadly intact, faces ongoing pressures from habitat modification, artisanal fishing, and development. No specific management plans target Brachypetersius huloti. Should the species become better established in the aquarium hobby, captive breeding would carry conservation value by reducing any collecting pressure on wild populations, though the primary population is considered stable.
