Bryconaethiops macrops was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1920, making it one of several African characiform species that Boulenger — the most prolific describer of African freshwater fishes — added to science in his long career at the British Museum. The species belongs to the genus Bryconaethiops, placed within the family Alestidae, the African tetras, which encompasses the familiar Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus) and the giant tigerfish (Hydrocynus). Alestidae is confined to sub-Saharan Africa and represents an early divergence within Characiformes.
The genus Bryconaethiops is one of the smaller alestid genera, and its systematics have been revisited in recent decades. A systematic review that rehabilitated the related Bryconaethiops yseuxi worked across the entire distribution of the genus — spanning the Nilo-Sudan, Lower Guinea, and Congo basin ichthyofaunal provinces — and clarified the boundaries and distributions of the member species. Like other alestids, B. macrops has a streamlined, laterally compressed body suited to open-water schooling.
