Taxonomy & naming
Bryconaethiops yseuxi was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 from material collected in the Congo River basin. The type locality is given as Haut Congo. After its original description the species fell into synonymy — first with B. microstoma, then with B. macrops — and was effectively invisible to researchers and hobbyists for over a hundred years.
Its validity was rehabilitated by Ibala Zamba and colleagues in a 2007 paper published in the Journal of Natural History, which identified a consistent set of distinguishing characters separating B. yseuxi from its congeners: notably its small adult size (maximum 3 in SL), 7.5 scales between the dorsal-fin origin and the lateral line, a distinctive gill-raker count of 11–13/1/8–12 on the first arch, and proportionally long dorsal and anal fin bases relative to standard length. The genus Bryconaethiops belongs to the family Alestidae — the African characins or African tetras — and is distributed across the Congo and Niger river systems.
Morphology
Bryconaethiops yseuxi is a small, deep-bodied, and laterally compressed fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. The body is noticeably high-backed relative to its length, a shape shared across the genus. Meristic features documented in the 2007 rehabilitation include approximately 10 soft dorsal rays, 21–23 anal rays, and a lateral line scale count of 34–39.
Colouration is relatively subdued: the flanks are silvery with a faint pinkish or rosy tinge, and a humeral spot is present but weakly expressed. Mature males develop an olive-green iridescence on the upper surface of the head. There is no bold horizontal stripe or other striking colour feature comparable to the more popular African tetras. Sexual dimorphism is limited; the olive-green head colour in males is the most reliable external indicator of sex.
Habitat
Bryconaethiops yseuxi is recorded from the Congo River between Boma, near the river's mouth, and Pool Malebo (the broad lake-like expansion of the Congo upstream of the rapids zone), spanning both the Democratic Republic of Congo on the south bank and the Republic of Congo on the north bank. This lower-to-middle Congo stretch is one of the most species-rich river systems in the world, characterised by enormous water volume, strong currents in its gorge sections, and calmer bays and backwaters around Pool Malebo.
Water conditions across the lower Congo are generally warm and vary from soft and mildly acidic in sheltered backwaters to more circumneutral in the main channel. Data for congeners suggest the genus as a whole tolerates a pH range of roughly 6.0–7.5 and favours oxygenated, clear to lightly turbid water. B. yseuxi is recorded as a pelagic freshwater species, suggesting it spends at least part of its time in open water or mid-column rather than being strictly associated with the riverbed.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Bryconaethiops yseuxi from the wild are not well documented in the available literature. Based on its body form — a moderately deep-bodied, open-water characin with a small mouth — and the feeding ecology reported for congeners and other alestids, it is likely an opportunistic feeder taking small invertebrates, aquatic insects, and organic particles in the water column.
In the aquarium, where the species is only occasionally kept, it appears to accept standard small foods without difficulty. Offer varied fare including high-quality micro-pellets or flake, frozen or live small invertebrates such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and Cyclops, and any other suitably sized live or prepared food. A diet with a live or frozen component is advisable both to maintain condition and to encourage spawning behaviour.
Mating
No specific observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Bryconaethiops yseuxi have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of related alestids and small African characins generally, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Males of many alestids are more slender-bodied than females and display colour intensification, particularly about the head, during the breeding season.
Given the male's olive-green head colouration, display behaviour likely involves conspicuous lateral presentation to rivals and potential mates. As with the majority of characins from the Congo basin, spawning is expected to occur among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in open water, with the eggs sinking or adhering to plants or substrate, and with no parental care from either parent afterward.
Breeding
Breeding records for Bryconaethiops yseuxi in captivity are extremely sparse, reflecting the species' rarity in the hobby. By analogy with other small alestid tetras from the Congo system, it is assumed to be an egg-scattering, free-spawning species that deposits adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no subsequent parental investment.
Breeders attempting this species would be advised to condition a group with high-quality live and frozen foods, provide fine-leaved vegetation or synthetic mops for spawning, and remove eggs promptly to a separate rearing vessel as the adults will almost certainly consume them. Incubation and fry-rearing parameters would likely follow general alestid practice — moderate warm temperatures, very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry products, then progression to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Detailed observations from successful captive spawnings would be a valuable addition to the literature.
In the aquarium
Bryconaethiops yseuxi appears only rarely in the hobby and is not an established trade species. When available, it is best kept as a group of six or more individuals in a well-filtered aquarium that replicates the clear, warm, oxygenated conditions of the lower Congo: good water movement, temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F, and a pH close to neutral. The tank should be spacious enough to allow active swimming, with open mid-water space and some planted or shaded areas at the margins.
The species is peaceful with similarly sized tankmates and should be kept with other small to mid-sized riverine fish from comparable water conditions. Its small mouth and modest size make it unsuitable as a companion for large or aggressive species. Because it is so infrequently exported, hobbyists who obtain it are in a position to make a genuine contribution by documenting its care and breeding behaviour — observations the wider fishkeeping literature currently lacks.
Conservation
Bryconaethiops yseuxi has not been assessed for the IUCN Red List and currently carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its range within the lower and middle Congo River — a large, relatively intact river system — suggests it is not immediately endangered in the way that species from small, isolated lake systems may be, though the lower Congo around Boma faces pressures from industrial development, artisanal fishing, and water-quality change.
The species' long synonymy under other names means that historical catch or population data may be attributed to B. microstoma or B. macrops rather than to B. yseuxi, making it difficult to assess population trends. A formal IUCN evaluation would require targeted survey data from the Boma–Pool Malebo reach. Until such an assessment is conducted, the conservation status of this species remains unknown.
