Bryconaethiops quinquesquamae was described by Teugels and Thys van den Audenaerde in 1990. The valid name is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences), which places the species in the genus Bryconaethiops, family Alestidae, order Characiformes — the African tetras. The Lower Guinea ichthyological province and the Niger River system are given as its distributional scope in the Catalog.
The genus Bryconaethiops belongs within the Alestidae alongside more familiar genera such as Alestes and Phenacogrammus. It is a small, relatively speciose genus of West and Central African stream fishes. Within the genus, B. quinquesquamae is distinguished in part by scale-count characters, particularly the number of transverse scales between the lateral line and the dorsal fin origin — a count of 5.5 scales — that is reflected in its species name.
Morphology

The Niger Delta is among the most oil-impacted freshwater ecosystems on Earth, and endemic species with limited ranges face compounding risks from spills, infrastructure, and the loss of riverine connectivity that oil development entails. Its Cameroon population in the Kienké and Lobé systems faces different but overlapping pressures from land use change in coastal forests.
