Taxonomy & naming
Bryconops melanurus was originally described by Marcus Eliezer Bloch in 1794, making it one of the earlier-described South American characoids, and the parenthetical authority in its name records that it was placed in a different genus at the time of description before being moved to Bryconops. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination.
The genus Bryconops belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a South American characoid family that has been separated from the broader Characidae in modern phylogenetic treatments. Bryconops is one of the larger genera in this family and contains slender, benthopelagic species distributed across river systems of the Guiana Shield and the wider Amazon drainage. Bryconops melanurus reaches the larger end of the genus in body size.
The type locality is recorded as Suriname. Specimens assigned to the species have since been documented from the Caraipé, Curuá, Madeira, Moju, and Tapajós rivers, indicating a range that extends well beyond the Guiana Shield coastal drainages into the Brazilian Amazon proper.
Morphology
Bryconops melanurus is a sleek, laterally somewhat compressed fish that, despite belonging to a family commonly thought of as small tetras, reaches a maximum total length of approximately 5 in — large for its context and at the upper end of the Bryconops genus. The body is elongate and silvery, with a darker, more greenish or brownish dorsal surface that fades to pale silver along the flanks and belly.
The species lacks the humeral spot that marks some of its congeners. The defining feature is the caudal-fin pattern: dark pigmentation on or near the caudal fin gives the fish its evocative common name. Unlike some species in the genus and family, Bryconops melanurus does not carry a prominent ocellus on the caudal peduncle; instead the markings are distributed across the caudal fin rays themselves. The fins are otherwise largely clear or faintly pigmented.
Sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked in the available literature; females of characoids of this type are often deeper-bodied when in breeding condition, but detailed accounts for this species are sparse.
Habitat
Bryconops melanurus is found in freshwater habitats across several river systems of the Guiana Shield and the Amazon basin, with documented records from the Caraipé, Curuá, Madeira, Moju, and Tapajós rivers of South America. It is a benthopelagic species, occupying the middle and lower water column of rivers and streams rather than the surface or the substrate.
FishBase records the species as tropical, with a temperature range of 73–79 °F and a pH range of 5.6–6.8, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic blackwater and clearwater systems of the Guiana Shield and the western Amazon. These are generally low-conductivity, tannin-influenced rivers with dense riparian vegetation, and the species' insectivorous diet suggests it is most active in zones where terrestrial insects fall or are washed into the water.
The species does not appear to show a preference for a particular micro-biotope, ranging more broadly within the water column in open stretches of river rather than associating closely with structure such as submerged wood or leaf litter banks.
Feeding
Bryconops melanurus is primarily an insectivore. A diet skewed toward protein and invertebrate matter reflects the species' natural feeding niche and helps maintain condition for active, long-finned fish.
Mating
Detailed mating observations for Bryconops melanurus in the wild are not well documented in the accessible literature. On the basis of the general biology of the family Iguanodectidae and the broader characoid assemblage, the species is expected to be a broadcast spawner that scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate without forming pair bonds or defending territories.
In river systems the onset of spawning in many Amazonian and Guiana Shield characoids is cued by the start of the rainy season and associated rises in water level, temperature fluctuations, and changes in water chemistry. The species reportedly lives in groups, which in spawning-season conditions would bring together enough individuals for opportunistic broadcast spawning events. Breeding
No aquarium breeding accounts for Bryconops melanurus are documented in the sources consulted. Raising fry would require fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before transitioning to nauplii. The species' size suggests fry are somewhat larger at hatching than those of small tetras, which may ease the earliest feeding stages. Practical breeding data for this species remain sparse, and any aquarist achieving reproducible spawning results would add meaningfully to the hobby knowledge base.
In the aquarium
Bryconops melanurus is seldom imported into the aquarium trade as a dedicated target species, but it appears periodically in mixed shipments of South American river fish. Its principal challenge as an aquarium subject is its size and activity level: at up to 5 in and described as an active swimmer that needs open water, it is not suited to small tanks. An aquarium of at least 47 in in length provides a more appropriate swimming corridor for a school of adults.
Water chemistry should reflect the species' Guiana Shield and Amazonian origins: soft, slightly acidic water in the range of pH 5.6–6.8 and temperature 73–79 °F suits it well. Excellent filtration and regular water changes are necessary to maintain the water quality that the species' soft-water habitat implies. The tank can be decorated with driftwood, leaf litter, and some fine-leaved planting at the margins, but central open water is more important than dense décor.
The tail-light tetra is a schooling species and should be kept in groups rather than as individuals or pairs; a group of six or more will be more settled and display more natural behaviour. Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful, and comfortable in soft, warm water — other medium-sized characoids, South American dwarf cichlids, and peaceful catfish are reasonable companions. The species is not a beginner's fish, primarily because of the space it requires and the difficulty in finding captive-bred stock, but it is otherwise undemanding in terms of diet and hardiness.
Conservation
Bryconops melanurus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment credited to Salvador, G.N. in 2023. The Least Concern listing reflects the species' relatively broad distribution across multiple South American river systems — including the Madeira and Tapajós, two of the largest tributaries of the Amazon — rather than restriction to a narrow endemic range.
Nonetheless, the rivers that the species inhabits are subject to the broad-scale pressures affecting Amazonian biodiversity: deforestation of riparian zones, siltation from agricultural and mining activities, hydroelectric development that fragments river systems and alters the flood-pulse dynamics that trigger many fish's breeding cycles, and mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining in the Guiana Shield region. None of these threats is species-specific, but they affect the community of species that share Bryconops melanurus's habitats. The Least Concern assessment should not be read as indicating a species under no pressure, but rather one whose current population is large enough across a wide enough area that it does not yet approach threatened thresholds.
