Taxonomy & naming
Bryconops tocantinensis was described by Guedes, Oliveira & Lucinda in 2016 from material collected in the Rio Conceição, a tributary of the rio Palma in the upper rio Tocantins drainage, Tocantins State, Brazil. The original description was published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 14, issue 2, DOI 10.1590/1982-0224-20150176).
The genus Bryconops is placed in the family Iguanodectidae within the order Characiformes — a group of mid-sized Neotropical tetras that historically floated between Characidae and their own family depending on the classification followed. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bryconops tocantinensis Guedes, Oliveira & Lucinda, 2016. The species epithet tocantinensis is a Latinised toponym referring to the Tocantins River drainage, the only drainage from which the species is currently known.
B. tocantinensis is distinguished from its congeners — particularly B. humeralis and B. vibex — by a combination of orange coloration of the dorsal, adipose, and caudal fins, the absence of a humeral spot, the absence of maxillary teeth, and a lower lateral line scale count (38–41 perforated scales versus 44–46 in B. vibex).
Morphology
The holotype measures 2 in standard length (approximately 2.5 in total length). FishBase records a maximum size of 2.5 in SL for male or unsexed specimens, placing this as a small to medium-sized characiform.
Meristic counts from the original description: dorsal soft rays 10–11; anal soft rays 25–29; vertebrae 40; lateral line scales 38–41 perforated. The body form is typical of mid-water Bryconops: moderately elongate, laterally compressed, with a pronounced adipose fin. The defining pigmentation feature is the orange coloration of the dorsal, adipose, and caudal fins; the humeral region lacks the dark spot that characterises several relatives. Maxillary teeth, present in B. humeralis and other congeners, are absent in this species, a useful diagnostic in preserved material.
Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Conceição, a stream tributary of the rio Palma within the upper rio Tocantins drainage, at an elevation consistent with the Cerrado–Tocantins transition zone of Tocantins State, Brazil. At the collection site the water was transparent (low suspended sediment load), with a bottom of sand, stones, and rocks, and riparian vegetation along the banks. Water chemistry recorded at the type locality: temperature 82 °F, pH 7.0.
FishBase characterises the habitat as stream and lotic shallow areas (depth up to 5 ft) with riparian vegetation. Syntopic species recorded at the type locality include Eigenmannia trilineata, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus, Astyanax cf. goyacensis, Knodus spp., and Ancistrus sp. — a community characteristic of clear, well-oxygenated Cerrado-margin streams.
The species is currently known only from the upper Tocantins drainage and appears to be endemic to that system, though survey coverage of the region's smaller tributaries remains incomplete.
Feeding
The original description characterises B. tocantinensis as insectivorous and opportunistic on aquatic invertebrates, consistent with the diet reported for most small Bryconops in clear-water stream habitats. The transparent, well-oxygenated stream environment at the type locality supports a diverse aquatic invertebrate community, and the species likely forages in the mid-water column and along the margins of riparian vegetation for insects, larvae, and small invertebrates.
Data on the precise dietary composition in the wild are sparse. In the genus generally, stomach content analyses from related species point to a dominance of aquatic and terrestrial insect material, supplemented opportunistically by small crustaceans and plant fragments.
Mating
No published observations of mating behaviour in B. tocantinensis exist in the available literature. Based on the biology of the genus and of small Neotropical characiforms generally, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, releasing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate during brief spawning episodes.
Reproductive seasonality in the upper Tocantins likely tracks the regional wet–dry cycle, with spawning activity potentially elevated during the rainy season (November–March) when water temperatures and food availability rise and seasonal flooding expands available habitat. These are inferences from the broader Characiformes biology; direct reproductive data for this species are lacking.
Breeding
Bryconops tocantinensis has not been documented in captive breeding programmes in the accessible literature, and it does not appear in mainstream hobby trade as of the time of writing. No captive husbandry or breeding accounts are available.
Based on the genus and family, it would likely spawn as other small characiforms do: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a sandy substrate, with small adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults requiring removal to prevent egg predation. Fry would need very fine first foods. Without established captive populations, specific parameters for conditioning, triggering spawning, or rearing fry are unknown.
In the aquarium
Bryconops tocantinensis is not established in the ornamental fish hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in trade. For aquarists who might obtain specimens through specialist channels, the wild habitat profile points toward a setup replicating a clear Cerrado stream: well-filtered, well-oxygenated water at around 79–82 °F and near-neutral pH (approximately 7.0), with a sandy and rocky substrate, subdued lighting filtered through riparian-style planting at the margins, and open swimming space in the centre.
The species' small adult size (to ~2.5 in SL) makes it suitable for a moderately sized aquarium of 31.5–39.5 in length kept as a shoal. As a mid-water insectivore it would likely accept live and frozen invertebrate foods readily. Tankmates should be peaceful and of similar size — other clear-water tetras, small loricariids, and non-aggressive dwarf cichlids would be appropriate companions based on the syntopic community at the type locality. Data on long-term captive care are absent.
Conservation
Bryconops tocantinensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species was described only in 2016 and the formal assessment process has not yet reached it.
The type locality falls within the upper Tocantins drainage, a system subject to significant hydrological modification — most notably the Tucuruí dam complex downstream, and ongoing pressure from Cerrado agricultural expansion and water extraction. Small, range-restricted endemics in Brazilian stream systems face cumulative risks from these pressures. Whether B. tocantinensis has a wider distribution within the Tocantins system than the single known type locality is not yet established, and targeted surveys would be needed to assess population size and range before a formal Red List evaluation could be completed. In the absence of data, caution is warranted.
