Caiapobrycon tucurui is a small characid from the Tocantins River basin in the Brazilian state of Pará, and the sole member of its genus. Described by Malabarba and Vari in 2000 from material collected in the rio Tucuruí drainage, it was distinguished from all other characids by a unique combination of anal-fin and body-scale features. At barely 2 in standard length and pelagic in habit, it occupies open water in a river system now heavily altered by the Tucuruí hydroelectric reservoir — one of the largest artificial lakes in the world — making its ecological status a legitimate conservation concern despite the absence of a formal IUCN assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Caiapobrycon tucurui was formally described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Richard P. Vari in 2000 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (v. 11, no. 3, pp. 315–326), making it the founding and only species of the monotypic genus Caiapobrycon. The type locality is the rio Tucuruí, within the rio Tocantins drainage, state of Pará, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Caiapobrycon tucurui Malabarba & Vari, 2000.

The original description placed Caiapobrycon in the family Characidae, where it remains. The ETYFish Project treats the genus under the broader Stevardiidae page in its coverage of higher-level Characiformes, but the name Characidae governs for this monotypic group. Malabarba and Vari noted that Caiapobrycon is morphologically distinct from other characids by its unique anal fin configuration and body-scale arrangement, justifying the new genus rather than assignment to any existing one.

The species name tucurui is a toponym referencing the rio Tucuruí, the type locality. The Tucuruí drainage itself is now subsumed in large part beneath the Tucuruí reservoir, created by the dam of the same name completed in 1984 — a fact that makes the type locality effectively a historical one.

Morphology

Caiapobrycon tucurui is a small fish, reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 2 in based on FishBase records, with the size range in the original description spanning 0.5–1.5 in SL. It is a pelagic freshwater species, suggesting a streamlined, open-water body form rather than a bottom-associated or heavily compressed benthic shape.

The defining morphological characters are the features that separate Caiapobrycon from all other characids: the configuration of the anal fin and the arrangement of body scales are described in the original description as unique within the family. Beyond those diagnostic features, detailed meristic data (fin ray counts, lateral-line scale counts, body proportions) are recorded in Malabarba and Vari (2000). Habitat

Caiapobrycon tucurui is recorded from the rio Tocantins basin in the state of Pará, Brazil, specifically from the rio Tucuruí and its drainage. The Tocantins is a major Brazilian river flowing northward into the Amazon estuary system, and its middle reaches are now dominated by the Tucuruí reservoir, an impoundment of about 2,497 mi² that inundated the original river channel and surrounding floodplain when the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam was closed in 1984.

FishBase classifies the species as pelagic in freshwater, indicating it occupies open water rather than benthic substrates.
