Charax leticiae is a slender, predatory characid from the interior river systems of South America — recorded from the Tocantins, upper Paraguay, and upper Paraná basins — where it inhabits slow-flowing floodplain rivers, tributaries, and oxbow lakes. Described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 1987, it is the only species in the genus named after a personal dedicatee: Lucena's own daughter, Leticia. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2021, its broad distribution and apparent resilience to habitat modification set it apart from many of its more range-restricted South American relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Charax leticiae was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 1987 in a major revisionary work on the Neotropical genus Charax Scopoli, 1777, published in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências da PUCRS. That monograph redefined the genus and described four new species simultaneously; leticiae was one of them. The type locality is recorded as the igarapé Urubu near Posto Trocaré, in the state of Pará, Brazil, within the rio Tocantins drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes confirms the name as valid.

A 2014 taxonomic review by Menezes and Lucena revisited the genus Charax and provided a detailed comparative diagnosis of C. leticiae against its congeners, confirming the species' distinctiveness and reinforcing the original description. Charax belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the family Characidae, a grouping of typically elongate, predatory tetras with a reduced or absent adipose fin and a distinctive jaw morphology suited to seizing prey.

The specific epithet leticiae is a Latin genitive honouring Lucena's daughter Leticia, making it one of the few members of the genus to carry a personal family patronym rather than a geographic or morphological name.

Morphology

Charax leticiae is a relatively slender characid, reaching a reported maximum standard length of 4 in. Like other members of the genus, it has the hallmark characine body plan associated with active pursuit predation: a somewhat compressed, fusiform profile with a noticeably upturned mouth and robust, conical teeth suited to gripping slippery, live prey. The eye is large relative to the head — a common feature in mid-water visual predators — and the fins are clear and unadorned, without the elaborate extensions or colour patches seen in some other tetras.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in habitat affiliation, suggesting it occupies the water column rather than the bottom, consistent with the open-water ambush or pursuit strategy typical of Charax. The trophic level of 3.7 ± 0.6 catalogued for the species indicates a diet based primarily on animal matter, placing it well above the herbivore or detritivore baseline. Detailed colour descriptions from the original literature were not available in the sources consulted; as with many preserved museum specimens, the in-life colour pattern may not be well documented in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Charax leticiae inhabits freshwater systems across several major South American river basins: the Tocantins, the upper Paraguay (including the Pantanal floodplain region), and the upper Paraná. This distribution spans parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, covering both the cerrado-margin rivers of central Brazil and the seasonally flooded lowlands of the Pantanal.

The IUCN assessment describes the species' preferred habitat as slow-flowing floodplain rivers, tributaries, and floodplain lakes — environments characterised by warm tropical temperatures, variable turbidity through the flood cycle, and abundant lateral aquatic vegetation and submerged structure during high water. The Pantanal habitats in which it occurs include some of the most biologically productive freshwater systems on the continent. FishBase records it as a tropical freshwater species.

The IUCN notes that the species has apparently expanded its range into the rio Paraná basin, and regards it as relatively common within its known range. The presence of C. leticiae in protected areas — including the Taiamã Ecological Station and Pantanal National Park — provides an additional layer of habitat security.

Feeding

The genus Charax is consistently characterised as predatory, and the trophic level recorded for C. leticiae (3.7) confirms a diet dominated by animal prey rather than plant matter or detritus. Like other members of the genus, it is presumed to feed on smaller fish and large invertebrates, using its upturned mouth and sharp teeth to seize and hold live prey — a feeding strategy sometimes described as scale-eating in some Characinae, though piscivory and invertebrate predation are more broadly documented in Charax.

Seasonal cues in the floodplain habitats C. leticiae occupies — including rising water levels and temperature shifts associated with the Pantanal flood pulse — are likely to be the primary triggers for reproductive activity, as is typical of South American floodplain fishes. Whether spawning aggregations form or whether pairing is more diffuse is not documented.

Breeding

Charax leticiae has not been established as a regularly bred species in the hobby, and detailed captive-breeding protocols are not documented in the sources consulted. The general breeding biology inferred from the family and genus is that of a non-guarding egg-scatterer: adhesive eggs would be deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or other substrates, hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures, with the fry requiring small live foods in the earliest stages.

Given the predatory nature of Charax species and their relatively large adult size, successful captive breeding would likely require separation of conditioned adults from eggs and fry, and a rearing environment stocked with appropriately sized live prey. The species is not commonly encountered in the ornamental trade, which limits the body of hobbyist experience available for reference.

In the aquarium

Charax leticiae is not a species commonly kept in the hobby. Its predatory disposition means it is unsuitable as a community fish with smaller tetras or other diminutive species; tankmates would need to be of similar or larger size and robust enough to coexist with an active mid-water predator. A spacious aquarium with open swimming space and some cover in the form of driftwood or dense planting along the margins would reflect its floodplain habitat.

Water parameters consistent with its South American tropical origin — warm temperatures in the range of around 75–82 °F, neutral to slightly acidic to neutral pH, and soft to moderately hard water — would be appropriate as a starting point, though the species' occupation of Pantanal habitats suggests some tolerance of variable conditions. Feeding is the principal challenge: Charax are predators that may refuse dry or prepared foods and require live or frozen alternatives such as small fish or large invertebrates. Data on long-term husbandry is sparse, and the species should be considered an advanced or specialist fish rather than a standard community tetra.

Conservation

Charax leticiae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on a 2021 evaluation by assessor F. Lima. The rationale cites the species' broad distribution across multiple river basins, its relative commonness within that range, and its apparent resilience to anthropogenic impacts. The population trend is recorded as increasing — an unusual and positive finding among South American freshwater fishes.

Occurrence in protected areas, including the Taiamã Ecological Station and Pantanal National Park, provides meaningful habitat security for populations in the Pantanal portion of its range. The apparent range expansion into the rio Paraná basin, if confirmed, further reduces concern about long-term range contraction. While the floodplain and wetland habitats the species occupies face ongoing pressures from agriculture, water management, and drainage in parts of its range, the overall picture as of the 2021 assessment is one of a species in a stable or improving position.
