Cynopotamus tocantinensis is a predatory characid native to the Tocantins River basin in Brazil, occurring across the Araguaia and lower Tocantins drainages. A benthopelagic fish growing to around 8.5 in standard length, it belongs to the toothless-piranhas group of the family Characidae — a lineage of active, sharp-toothed hunters whose genus name literally evokes dog-toothed river beasts. Assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, it is a species of the large Neotropical river system and remains relatively data-sparse in the aquarium literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynopotamus tocantinensis was described in 1987 by Naércio A. Menezes, a leading Brazilian ichthyologist based at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. The species name is a straightforward toponym: tocantinensis, meaning 'of the Tocantins,' referring to the Tocantins River basin, the type locality and sole known range of the fish. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) records the valid name as Cynopotamus tocantinensis Menezes, 1987, with the authority unparenthesised, as the species has remained within the genus in which it was described.

The genus Cynopotamus Valenciennes, 1850 belongs to the tribe Acestrorhynchini or a nearby placement within Characidae, grouping the so-called dog-toothed characins — slender, predatory fish with prominent canine-like teeth. The group is sometimes treated within a broader circumscription of Characidae or within a subfamily, and classification continues to be revised as molecular phylogenetics reshapes the family. C. tocantinensis is one of several Cynopotamus species distributed across distinct South American river basins, each confined to a single drainage or basin.

Morphology

Cynopotamus tocantinensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 8.5 in, making it one of the larger members of its genus. Like other Cynopotamus, it is a fusiform, elongate fish built for pursuit predation: a moderately streamlined body, a large terminal mouth armed with prominent teeth suited for grasping prey, and a forked caudal fin typical of active open-water swimmers.

FishBase records a trophic level of 4.0 (± 0.6 se), consistent with a diet at or near the top of the local food chain and placing it firmly in the carnivore guild rather than the omnivore category typical of many smaller characids. As with many predatory characids, the body colouration tends to be silvery with countershading — darker dorsally, pale ventrally — providing camouflage in the river column. Data on finer meristic and colouration details for this species specifically are sparse in the accessible literature.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Tocantins River basin of Brazil, with documented occurrences in both the Araguaia River and the lower Tocantins River. The Tocantins-Araguaia system is one of South America's major river drainages, rising in the central Brazilian plateau (Cerrado) and flowing northward to empty into the Amazon estuary near Belém, Pará. FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic — associated with the middle and lower water column rather than the surface or the substrate — in freshwater tropical environments.

As a river-basin endemic of a large Neotropical drainage, C. tocantinensis likely occupies a variety of riverine microhabitats across its range, from the main channel to tributary systems within the basin. The Araguaia-Tocantins basin spans a wide latitudinal and ecological gradient, from Cerrado savanna headwaters to Amazonian forest reaches, and a fish of 8.5 in SL in this system would be expected in moderate to larger river stretches rather than small streams or headwaters.

Feeding

A trophic level of 4.0 classifies Cynopotamus tocantinensis as a carnivore feeding on other fish and larger invertebrates. The name Cynopotamus — 'dog-toothed river fish' — reflects the dentition: robust, canine-like teeth that allow the fish to grip and subdue live prey. In the wild, the species is presumed to prey primarily on smaller fishes encountered in open-water and benthopelagic situations within the river.

Detailed dietary studies specific to this species are not widely available in the accessible literature. By analogy with the genus and with similarly sized predatory characids in the Tocantins system, the diet likely shifts ontogenetically from invertebrates in juveniles toward a piscivorous diet in adults. Mating

Cynopotamus tocantinensis has not been bred in captivity in any documented hobbyist or scientific account. Predatory characids of this size are rarely kept in aquaria and almost never reproduced intentionally in the hobby. General principles for predatory Characidae of comparable size suggest egg-scattering spawning, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs with no parental care, and larvae that are highly predatory from an early age, requiring live foods.

The large adult size (to 8.5 in SL) and piscivorous habits make captive breeding logistically demanding — it would require substantial holding space and live or frozen fish-based feeding regimes from very early in larval development. No clutch size, incubation period, or rearing data are available for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Cynopotamus tocantinensis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. At a maximum standard length of 8.5 in it is a large predatory characid, and no established hobby literature covers its care. The combination of size, active piscivorous habits, and origin from a large South American river suggests that any aquarium housing it would need to be very large — several hundred litres at minimum — with robust filtration, open swimming space, and tankmates large enough not to be eaten.

The species is not available in the ornamental fish trade in any meaningful quantity. For aquarists interested in large predatory South American characids, closely related genera with more established hobby records would be more practical starting points. C. tocantinensis is, for now, a fish of ichthyological rather than hobby interest.

Conservation

Cynopotamus tocantinensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018. The Least Concern designation reflects that the species does not currently meet the thresholds for a threatened category based on available data about population size, trend, or range.

The species is endemic to the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, a drainage that has experienced significant anthropogenic change over the past several decades. The construction of hydroelectric dams — most notably the Tucuruí Dam on the lower Tocantins, one of the largest in the world — has altered flow regimes, blocked fish passage, and inundated large stretches of river. A comprehensive Tocantins ichthyofauna survey (Araguaia-Tocantins basin composition, conservation, and diversity study) listed the species under 'Menos preocupante' (Least Concern), consistent with the IUCN assessment. Continued monitoring of predatory species in modified river systems is prudent, as trophically upper-level fish can be sensitive to cascading effects of habitat change.
