Ceratobranchia obtusirostris was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1914, with the type locality recorded as Chauchamago (Chanchamayo), Junín, Peru. The species is placed in the genus Ceratobranchia within the family Characidae; the genus belongs to the tribe Stevardiini and is characterised by specialised gill-arch structures that distinguish it from close relatives. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Ceratobranchia obtusirostris Eigenmann, 1914 as the valid name.
The specific epithet obtusirostris is Latin, combining obtusus (blunt) and rostrum (snout or beak), referring to the blunt-snouted facial profile that sets the species apart from sharper-snouted congeners. The genus name Ceratobranchia derives from the Greek keras (horn) and branchia (gill), alluding to the horn-like or modified gill-arch projections that are a defining character of the genus. No widely used common name has been established in either the scientific or hobbyist literature.
Morphology
Ceratobranchia obtusirostris is a small, slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in. The body plan is typical of many small Amazonian tetras: an elongate, fusiform shape suited to life in open water, with the blunt snout that gives the species its name distinguishing it from congeners.
As with most small characids, coloration in preserved specimens tends toward a pale silvery body with variable lateral pigmentation; live coloration data are sparse. Habitat

In Ecuador its range encompasses the Upano, Zamora, Pastaza, Chinchipe, and Morona Santiago sub-basins; in Peru it is recorded from the Madre de Dios, Urubamba, Ucayali, and Marañon basins. The type locality, Chanchamayo in Junín, Peru, lies in an Andean valley on the eastern slope of the Andes, and the IUCN notes an elevation range of 200 to 1,0 ft above sea level, placing the species firmly in the Andean piedmont zone and upper lowland Amazon.
The fish inhabits tropical rainforest streams on fluvial-alluvial plains, in a zone characterised by a tropical rainy climate and elevations of roughly 997–1211 ft in the assessed portions of its range. These are clear to slightly turbid streams with soft, warm water typical of Amazonian headwater systems. FishBase records a temperature range of 68–75 °F. Population trend is considered stable, and the species has not been reported as a dominant habitat specialist requiring particular micro-habitat conditions beyond its broad Amazonian stream environment.
Feeding

Ceratobranchia obtusirostris is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, and no established husbandry literature exists for it. As a small pelagic schooling fish from Andean foothill streams, it would require the conditions typical of western Amazon tetras: warm, clean, well-oxygenated water in the range of 68–75 °F, low to moderate water hardness, and a soft, slightly acidic to neutral pH. Good filtration and regular water changes to maintain low dissolved-waste levels are standard for small Amazonian characids.
The species would be expected to do best in a group of six or more individuals, as schooling provides security for what is a naturally gregarious open-water fish. A long aquarium with a well-planted perimeter and open central swimming space suits its pelagic lifestyle. Given its small size (to 2 in), tankmates should be similarly small and non-aggressive. Feeding on small prepared and live foods, as noted under Feeding, would be appropriate. Hobbyists acquiring this species should be aware that details of its care requirements remain largely unverified.
Conservation
Ceratobranchia obtusirostris is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 22 April 2014 and published in 2016. The justification rests on the species' broad distribution across multiple sub-basins in both Ecuador and Peru, its stable population trend, and the absence of any major widespread threat. The IUCN notes that no portion of its known range falls within a formally protected area.
Locally, the IUCN flagged gold mining and proposed dam construction in the Zamora basin (Ecuador) as potential threats, but these were not judged sufficient to elevate the species above Least Concern given its range extent. The stable population and wide distribution across the western Amazon piedmont mean the species is not considered at risk under current conditions, though continued monitoring of dam and mining pressures in the headwater zone would be appropriate. It is not known to occur in any major aquarium-fish collection site of commercial significance.
