Taxonomy & naming

Ceratobranchia elatior was described by the Italian ichthyologist Enrico Tortonese in 1942, in a study of South American characids encompassing the subfamilies Tetragonopterinae, Glandulocaudinae, and Stethaprioninae. The valid name, as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), remains Ceratobranchia elatior Tortonese, 1942.

The genus Ceratobranchia is distinguished from the great majority of characids by its modified gill arches, which bear bony horn-like projections — the structures that give the genus its name. This character has long attracted taxonomic interest, but the genus and its immediate allies have received comparatively little revision, leaving species-level boundaries and the extent of intraspecific variation somewhat uncertain.
