Charax metae is a medium-sized, predatory characin endemic to the upper Meta River basin of Colombia and Venezuela — a drainage of the Orinoco system tucked against the eastern Andes. Rarely seen in the hobby and seldom the subject of dedicated study, it represents the quiet majority of Neotropical fish diversity: locally present, IUCN-assessed as Least Concern, and yet known from only scattered museum collections and recent ichthyological surveys of the Colombian piedmont.

Taxonomy & naming

Charax metae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922, and the species epithet refers to the Meta River, the type drainage in which the species was first collected. Eigenmann was the preeminent authority on South American characins in the early twentieth century, and his 1922 work on the fishes of western South America placed dozens of new species in formal nomenclature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Charax metae Eigenmann, 1922 as the valid combination.

The genus Charax belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the large family Characidae. Charax species are characterised by a distinctive body shape — deep, laterally compressed, with a strongly decurved ventral profile — and by sharp, somewhat fang-like teeth that mark them as piscivorous or invertivrate predators. The genus is distributed broadly across tropical South America, and C. metae sits among the Andean-piedmont members of the group, restricted to the upper Meta drainage on the Colombian-Venezuelan borderlands.

Morphology

Charax metae reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in. Like all Charax, the body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, with a pronounced curvature to the ventral profile that gives the fish a slightly hunched or arched appearance when viewed from the side. The mouth is terminal and angled upward, equipped with the small but pointed teeth characteristic of the genus — adapted for seizing small prey.

A specimen collected during a 2025 ichthyological survey of the Humea and Bata sub-basins of the Orinoco piedmont in Cundinamarca, Colombia (deposited as ICN-MHN 25002) measured 2.5 in standard length, well within the species' documented size range. Coloration in preserved specimens is the silver-to-straw base colour typical of the genus, often with a dark lateral stripe or humeral spot; live coloration is not well documented in published sources.

Habitat

Charax metae is an endemic of the upper Meta River basin, a major left-bank tributary of the Orinoco draining the Colombian Llanos and eastern Andean piedmont. Its range spans the Colombian-Venezuelan border region within this basin. FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical waters — meaning it occupies the lower and mid-water column of its riverine habitat rather than being strictly bottom-hugging.

Recent field work has recorded the species from smaller sub-basins within the broader Meta-Orinoco piedmont, including the Humea River in Cundinamarca and the adjacent Gazaduje and Gazamumo rivers at approximately 4°24′ N, 73°18′ W — foothill streams draining the eastern slope of the Andes into the Llanos. These are warm, typically clear or seasonally turbid lowland and piedmont rivers with a marked seasonal flood pulse characteristic of Orinoco-system hydrology.

Feeding

Charax species are generally regarded as opportunistic carnivores, taking smaller fishes and large invertebrates. The relatively large, upward-angled mouth and pointed dentition of C. metae are consistent with a piscivorous or insectivorous feeding mode, ambushing or pursuing prey in the mid-water column.

No detailed stomach-content studies specific to C. metae appear in the published literature. By analogy with better-studied congeners and given its benthopelagic habitat classification, the species likely feeds on small tetras and other characins, aquatic insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, Charax species are typically offered live or frozen foods — small feeder fish, earthworms, or large invertebrates — as they tend to refuse prepared diets.

Mating

No observations of reproductive behaviour in wild C. metae have been published. Charax species are presumed to be egg-scattering open-water or plant-associated spawners without parental care, consistent with the general biology of Characinae. Males of Charax species may be slimmer-bodied than females when in spawning condition, as is typical for many characins, though specific dimorphic characters for C. metae are not described in the available literature.

Spawning in the Meta basin likely follows the seasonal flood pulse of Orinoco-system rivers, with peak reproductive activity tied to rising water levels in the wet season — a pattern documented broadly in Neotropical characins that use flooded marginal vegetation as spawning and nursery habitat.

Breeding

Charax metae has not been bred in captivity under documented aquarium conditions, and no breeding accounts appear in the hobby literature. Based on the biology of the genus and family, the species would be expected to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over substrate, with no parental care provided by either sex. Eggs and fry would be at risk of predation by the adults.

For aquarists interested in attempting to breed the species, the seasonal cues of the Meta basin — temperature fluctuations tied to Andean runoff and photoperiod changes — may need to be simulated. Water temperature in the upper Meta and piedmont tributaries fluctuates with altitude and season; conditioning the fish on varied live foods before a simulated wet-season flood cycle would follow standard practice for Orinoco-drainage characins.

In the aquarium

Charax metae is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade and is not a species that hobbyists are likely to encounter except through specialist importers or ichthyological collecting. Its predatory temperament makes it unsuitable for community tanks with small fishes; it should be kept with similarly sized or larger, robust companions that are not small enough to be treated as prey.

Water parameters should reflect its Meta-basin origins: warm tropical temperatures (roughly 75–82 °F), slightly soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to mildly acidic water consistent with Orinoco-system piedmont rivers. A spacious aquarium with ample open swimming space and some cover would suit the species' benthopelagic lifestyle. Feeding is the principal challenge in captivity: Charax species frequently refuse dry foods and require live or high-quality frozen alternatives. Data on long-term husbandry for this specific species are essentially absent from published hobby sources.

Conservation

Charax metae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in 2020 showing a stable population trend. The listing reflects an adequate range within the upper Meta basin and no evidence of rapid population decline at the time of assessment. Identified threats include agricultural effluents and domestic wastewater affecting water quality in the Colombian Llanos and piedmont, as well as pressures from annual and perennial crop agriculture in the catchment.

As an endemic of the Meta River basin — itself a tributary system of the Orinoco — the species is sensitive to land-use changes on the Colombian-Venezuelan border. Recent ichthyological survey work (2025) in the Humea River sub-basin confirms the species remains present in piedmont tributaries, and its occurrence across multiple river systems within the basin provides some buffer against localised habitat degradation. No targeted conservation measures are known to be in place for C. metae specifically.
