Charax michaeli is a large, predatory characin of the Amazon and Rio Branco drainages, growing to around 7.5 in standard length and wearing the genus's characteristic glassy transparency over a deep-bodied, laterally compressed frame. Though seldom a staple of the trade, it reaches importers under the loose label 'glass characin' and draws attention for its mood-driven colour changes — a shoulder blotch and a caudal peduncle spot that appear, fade, or combine depending on the fish's state. The IUCN assessed the species as Least Concern in 2018, noting a wide distribution across the rio Negro, rio Branco, Amazonas, and rio Purus basins but a frequency that is present rather than abundant.

Taxonomy & naming

Charax michaeli was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 1989. The type locality is the Rio Branco at Igarapé do Cujobim in the state of Roraima, Brazil, represented by the holotype (MZUSP 37276, an 4.5 in SL individual) catalogued in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo; type material is documented by Oyakawa (1998) in the catalogue of MZUSP Characiformes types. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) confirms the valid name as Charax michaeli Lucena, 1989.

The genus Charax belongs to the subfamily Characinae (family Characidae) and contains around 18 species distinguishable from close relatives such as Cynopotamus and Roeboides chiefly by tooth form — medium-length, recurved tusks set in jaws of moderate length. Within Characinae the genus sits among the so-called 'glass-knifers,' large-bodied predatory characins with compressed, semi-transparent bodies and a distinctly upturned mouth. Charax michaeli is one of the larger species in the genus.

Morphology

Adults of Charax michaeli reach approximately 7.5 in standard length, though importers frequently cite 8 in as typical market size. The body is deep, strongly laterally compressed, and semi-transparent — the organs visible as a dark visceral mass behind the pectoral region — giving rise to the English common name 'glass characin.' The mouth is large and distinctly upturned, armed with the recurved teeth characteristic of the genus. The overall body plan is that of an ambush or open-water pursuit predator.

Colouration is subdued but variable with mood. The flanks are lightly silvery to faintly orange-tinted. Two dark blotches are intermittently expressed: one on the shoulder behind the operculum and one at the base of the caudal peduncle. These spots may appear singly, together, or not at all, and their expression tracks the fish's arousal state, making individuals appear quite different from one moment to the next. A slight orange wash to the body has been noted in imported specimens.

Habitat

Charax michaeli is recorded from the Rio Branco basin (Roraima, Amazonas, Pará, Amapá, and Acre states, Brazil) and, according to the IUCN assessment, also from the broader rio Negro, rio Amazonas, and rio Purus basins. The distributional footprint may extend to Colombian, Peruvian, and possibly Ecuadorian tributaries of the Amazon drainage, though the Brazilian records underpin the formal description. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic in tropical freshwater — associated with the lower and mid water column of rivers and streams rather than strictly bottom-hugging.

The Branco river system feeds warm, blackwater and clearwater drainages typical of the Guiana Shield borderlands: low conductivity, slightly acidic to near-neutral pH, and temperatures broadly in the tropical freshwater range. The IUCN notes the species occupies permanent rivers and freshwater wetlands; it is described as frequent but not abundant throughout its range, suggesting it is patchily distributed rather than ubiquitous.

Feeding

Charax michaeli is a carnivore with a trophic level of approximately 3.9 (FishBase), placing it firmly among piscivorous and invertebrate-eating predators. The upturned mouth, strong recurved teeth, and body size are consistent with a diet of smaller fish and large invertebrates taken in the water column. Importers note that the species cannot safely be housed with fish less than roughly one-quarter of its own body length, as such tankmates are at real risk of predation.

In the aquarium the species accepts meaty prepared and frozen foods appropriate to a large characin: pieces of fish fillet, shrimp, mussel, and large earthworm segments, as well as large frozen foods such as jumbo bloodworm and lance fish. Live fish may trigger a strong predatory response. As with many Characinae, weaning individuals from live food to dead or prepared alternatives takes patience, and feeding response is improved by dimmer light conditions or a well-planted environment where the fish feels less exposed.

Mating

Specific observations of courtship in Charax michaeli are not well documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature. As a member of Characinae, the species is almost certainly an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care — the reproductive mode universal in the subfamily. Courtship in related large Characinae typically involves males pursuing females through open water with rapid chasing sequences, and spawning occurs in the water column or among submerged vegetation.

Males in some Charax species are slender-bodied relative to females, which become noticeably deeper-bellied when gravid, though whether this holds consistently for C. michaeli under aquarium conditions is unconfirmed. Conditioning a potential pair or small group on high-protein live or frozen foods is the usual preparation for attempted breeding in large characins.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Charax michaeli appear in the available literature. By analogy with other open-water spawning Characinae, eggs would be adhesive or semi-buoyant and scattered freely in the water column or among fine-leaved plants, with no parental care and a real risk of egg predation by the adults themselves. Incubation at tropical temperatures is typically 24–72 hours in the subfamily, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and requiring very small live foods initially.

Any serious breeding attempt would call for a large, well-filtered tank, conditioning the fish to peak weight on varied protein-rich foods, and either removal of the adults after spawning or use of a mesh separator to protect eggs from consumption. The species has not been the subject of targeted aquaculture work, and breeding reports from hobbyists remain scarce — data on this topic should be considered sparse.

In the aquarium

Charax michaeli requires a large aquarium — at 7–8 in it is a substantial fish, and a group of even two or three individuals demands a tank of at least 55 US gal, preferably more, with robust filtration and good oxygenation. The species is reportedly peaceful among conspecifics and somewhat shy by the standards of large predatory characins, but it is incompatible with small tankmates. Suitable companions are large, robust fish of comparable size: large catfish, South American cichlids, or other big characins that cannot be swallowed.

The mood-driven coloration shift — shoulder spot and caudal spot appearing and fading with the fish's internal state — makes the species interesting to observe, and Aquarium Glaser importers describe individuals that shift between dramatically different appearances over minutes. The fish benefit from a tank with some cover (driftwood, large-leaved plants, or overhanging structure) that reduces stress and encourages normal behaviour. Water chemistry should approximate the soft, warm conditions of its native Amazonian drainages: temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, pH in the mildly acidic to neutral range, and low to moderate hardness. The species is infrequently available in the trade and commands a price reflecting its size and rarity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Charax michaeli as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018, published in 2022. The assessment reflects a reasonably broad distribution across multiple large South American river basins — the rio Negro/Branco, rio Amazonas, and rio Purus systems — with no identified major threats and an apparently stable, if patchy, population. No significant habitat degradation or targeted commercial harvest pressure was flagged at the time of assessment.

The species' wide range across large, relatively intact Amazonian drainages provides a degree of resilience lacking in more restricted taxa. Deforestation and water quality changes in the Amazon basin remain background concerns for any species in the region, but as of the 2018 evaluation C. michaeli was not considered to be approaching threat thresholds. The population trend was recorded as unknown, indicating that robust abundance data are absent and that future reassessments will need monitoring data to confirm the current status.
