Taxonomy & naming
Charax niger was described by Carlos A. S. Lucena in 1989 and named alongside two related species in a paper published in the Revue Française d'Aquariologie (volume 15, number 4). The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Charax niger Lucena, 1989. A taxonomic revision of the genus Charax by Menezes and Lucena (2014) confirmed the species and clarified its distribution across three distinct drainage systems: the upper rio Tocantins, the rio Negro basin, and the Araguari–Macari–Amapá coastal river system in the state of Amapá.
The genus Charax belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the family Characidae. Charax species are sometimes called glass tetras or headstanders in the hobby on account of their characteristic resting posture — body tilted at a downward angle — and their relatively transparent or silvery flanks. The specific epithet niger is Latin for black, likely alluding to the fish's association with blackwater habitats or to colouration noted in the original specimens.
Morphology
Charax niger is an elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 5 in standard length — large for the genus. The body is fairly slender and silvery, with the somewhat translucent lateral flanks typical of Charax. The head is pointed, the mouth terminal and angled upward, and the jaw dentition is well developed for a fish that consumes other fishes and invertebrates. Like other members of the genus it carries an adipose fin.
Males are distinguished by the presence of bony hooks on the rays of the anal fin, a feature common across several Characinae and visible on close inspection. This is the most reliable external character for sexing the species. The Encyclopedia of Life notes bilateral symmetry, the presence of a swim bladder (which contributes to the hearing range of around 2000 Hz via the Weberian apparatus), and a mineralised skeleton containing apatite and hydroxylapatite.
Habitat
Charax niger inhabits small blackwater rivers — água preta — in northern and central Brazil. Its known range spans three drainage systems: the rio Negro basin (including the rio Preto da Eva, a blackwater tributary of the lower Negro), the upper rio Tocantins, and the coastal rivers of Amapá, including the rio Araguari. Museum specimen records from the rio Negro basin are held at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP).
Blackwater rivers of the Amazon basin are characterised by very low pH, low conductivity, high dissolved organic carbon from decomposing vegetation, and warm temperatures. FishBase classifies Charax niger as benthopelagic — occurring in the water column above the substrate — in tropical freshwaters. The IUCN places its habitat as permanent inland rivers and streams in the wetlands (inland) category. Population density appears to be low: the IUCN notes the species is "frequent but not abundant" within its range.
Feeding
Charax niger is partially carnivorous. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.8 ± 0.6, indicating a diet substantially above herbivory and consistent with predation on invertebrates and small fishes. Like other Charax, it is likely an opportunistic predator that uses its upward-angled mouth and body tilt to intercept prey from below — a foraging strategy that makes the genus effective hunters of small tetras and other characids in the upper water column.
In the aquarium, Charax species generally accept live and frozen foods readily — small fish, earthworms, river shrimp, and large bloodworm — and can often be weaned onto meaty prepared foods over time. Aggressive feeding responses are common, and the species should not be housed with fishes small enough to be swallowed.
Mating
No specific observations of courtship behaviour in Charax niger have been published in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of the genus and family, spawning is presumed to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of Characidae: males and females engage in brief chasing and parallel swimming before releasing and fertilising eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, with no pair bond or parental attention.
The presence of anal-fin hooks in males — confirmed by the IUCN assessment — is interpreted in the literature as an adaptation related to spawning contact: the hooks may interlock with female fin rays during mating to improve fertilisation efficiency, a structure documented across multiple Characinae genera. Conditioning with varied live and frozen foods is expected to stimulate spawning readiness, as in related species.
Breeding
Charax niger has not been bred in captivity in any widely reported account. Given the egg-scattering reproductive mode inferred for the genus, breeding attempts would likely follow the approach used for other large Characinae: conditioning adults separately on rich live foods, then introducing them to a dimly lit, well-planted spawning tank with slightly acidic, soft water mimicking the blackwater conditions of the species' natural range. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs would be expected among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
The adults should be removed after spawning, as no parental care is known in Charax. Incubation duration and fry requirements are undocumented for this species; data from related Charax suggest hatching within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with fry requiring small live foods at first. Practical breeding data from aquarists would fill a genuine gap in the record.
In the aquarium
Charax niger is an uncommon fish in the hobby and is rarely encountered in mainstream retail. It is a predatory, active mid-water species and requires a spacious aquarium of at least 47 in in length to accommodate both its size and its fast, dart-and-glide movement. Tankmates should be large enough not to be consumed — robust tetras, larger cichlids tolerant of the species' activity level, or similar large characids — and the tank should be well covered, as Charax are capable jumpers.
Water conditions should replicate the soft, acidic blackwater of the species' home rivers: pH in the range 5.5–7.0, low conductivity, tannin-stained water from driftwood or dried leaves, and temperatures in the 75–84 °F range. Subdued lighting suits the species and brings out the best behaviour. The diet must be meaty — live or frozen fish, large invertebrates, and worm-based foods — with prepared foods accepted only once the fish is well settled. A rarely kept but rewarding species for the specialist aquarist interested in Amazonian predatory characids.
Conservation
Charax niger is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2022 and based on data gathered as of 7 November 2018. The evaluation was conducted under the authority of Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). No specific threats have been identified, and no conservation programmes or protected-area records were noted in the assessment.
The population trend is listed as unknown. While the species is described as frequent within its range, it is not abundant, and its distribution across three geographically separated drainage systems — rio Negro, upper Tocantins, and Amapá coastal rivers — means that threats to any one of those systems (deforestation, river modification, gold-mining pollution, a serious issue in the rio Negro and Tocantins catchments) could affect a subset of the global population without triggering a range-wide decline assessment. Ongoing monitoring would be valuable given Brazil's accelerating land-use pressures in Amazonia and Amapá.
