Charax rupununi is a small, translucent-bodied headstander characin from the rivers and lakes of the Guiana Shield — a region of ancient, biologically rich drainages straddling present-day Guyana and northern Brazil. Described from Water Dog Falls on the Burro Burro River in what was then British Guiana, this miniature piscivore reaches just 2 in standard length yet carries the genus's characteristic upturned snout and compressed, glassy body. It ranges across the Essequibo and Trombetas river basins and has been assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, its populations underpinned by the still-intact forests of the Guiana highlands.

Taxonomy & naming

Charax rupununi was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in his landmark 1912 monograph on the freshwater fishes of British Guiana, published as volume five of the Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum. Eigenmann established the type locality as Water Dog Falls on the Burro Burro River, a tributary system draining into the upper Essequibo basin in what is now Guyana. The name rupununi refers to the Rupununi region of southern Guyana — an expansive savanna and wetland district whose rivers feed the Essequibo — which Eigenmann explored during his expeditions to document the extraordinary fish fauna of the Guiana Shield.

The genus Charax belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the large family Characidae. Charax species are small, laterally compressed characins characterised by a distinctly oblique, upturned mouth suited for seizing prey, and by the translucent or glassy flanks that give the genus a fragile, drifting appearance in the water. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Charax rupununi Eigenmann, 1912 as the valid name. Because the genus Charax was not changed from the original, no parenthetical is used around the authority.

Morphology

Charax rupununi is a small, deep-bellied, strongly laterally compressed characin reaching a reported maximum of 2 in standard length. The body profile is distinctive: the dorsal outline curves steeply from head to dorsal fin while the ventral keel is more straight, and the head is angled slightly downward so that the mouth tilts upward — the headstander posture characteristic of the genus. The jaws bear small but sharp teeth suited for snapping up small aquatic animals.

The flanks are largely translucent to semi-silvery, with the internal organs and skeleton visible through the body wall in living specimens — a feature shared across the Charax genus and one that earns these fish the 'glass' descriptor in vernacular names. Scales are small and reflective. The fins are hyaline (clear). Sexual dimorphism is not well documented in the literature for this species; size and body depth differences between sexes, common in the family, may be present but specific data are sparse.

Habitat

Charax rupununi inhabits the Essequibo and Trombetas river basins, spanning the borderlands of Guyana and northern Brazil — core territory of the Guiana Shield, one of the oldest geological formations on Earth and a centre of endemism for South American freshwater fishes. The type locality, Water Dog Falls on the Burro Burro River, is a fast-flowing, rocky stream environment, and the species has also been recorded from Jacaré Lake, indicating tolerance of both lotic and lentic habitats within the drainage.

FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and freshwater tropical. The Guiana Shield rivers and associated lakes are typically clear to black-water, with warm temperatures, low to moderate conductivity, and often acidic to near-neutral pH reflecting the ancient, nutrient-poor crystalline basement geology. The forests covering this region remain among the least disturbed in South America, which explains the species' stable conservation outlook. The species is part of an endemic Guiana Shield fauna that includes many characins found nowhere else on the continent.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Charax rupununi a trophic level of 3.4, placing it squarely in the lower piscivore to invertebrate predator range — a fish that hunts other small animals rather than grazing on plant material or detritus. The Guyana Freshwater Fishes Checklist (Taphorn et al. 2022) classifies it as a benthic omnivore consuming benthic fauna, suggesting that small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar prey found near the substrate — form the bulk of the diet in the wild.

The upturned mouth typical of Charax is well suited for ambush or pursuit of small prey items near the water surface or in the mid-water column, and in the genus more broadly small fish and large invertebrates are taken when available. In the aquarium, Charax species generally accept small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and small aquatic insects are appropriate — and some individuals can be trained onto good-quality micro-pellets with patience.

Mating

No specific mating observations for Charax rupununi have been published in the available literature, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade in any numbers. Based on family-level biology, Charax and related characins are egg-scattering open spawners: males pursue ripe females, and the pair release eggs and sperm simultaneously in open water or over fine-leaved vegetation, with no bond formation and no parental care.

In closely related Characinae, males may develop nuptial tubercles or subtle color intensification during breeding condition, and spawning is thought to be seasonal in the wild, triggered by shifts in water temperature, photoperiod, or flood-pulse cues that are characteristic of Guiana Shield river systems. Fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged vegetation likely serve as spawning sites, and the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among plant matter after release.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Charax rupununi has not been documented in the hobby literature, and the species is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade. By analogy with other small characins of the subfamily, a breeding setup would likely involve a well-planted tank with soft, slightly acidic water mimicking the Guiana Shield conditions of the type locality, a conditioning period on live and frozen foods, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs in small characins of this type are typically small, non-adhesive to slightly adhesive, and hatch within 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and requiring infusoria or similarly fine first foods. Data on clutch size, incubation time, and fry development are absent from the available literature for this species specifically; these details would require direct observation from dedicated breeding attempts.

In the aquarium

Charax rupununi is essentially unknown in the ornamental hobby and is not available through normal trade channels. Specimens would only reach aquarists through scientific collecting expeditions or specialist importers with access to Guyana or northern Brazil. Its small size — 2 in maximum — would make it suitable for a species tank or a carefully chosen community with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish that it cannot swallow and that will not intimidate it.

A biotope-appropriate setup reflecting the Guiana Shield rivers of its range — warm (75–82 °F), soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with tannin staining, leaf litter, and fine-leaved plants — would best suit the species. The headstander posture and translucent body make it a visually interesting subject for the specialist, but practical husbandry information is absent from the literature, and any keeper acquiring this fish would be largely working without a roadmap.

Conservation

Charax rupununi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 14 December 2020. The listing reflects the species' occurrence across the Essequibo and Trombetas river basins — a broad distribution within the Guiana Shield — and the largely intact condition of the forests and river systems in this region. Unlike many South American fishes restricted to a single lake or river reach, the species has distributional breadth across a landscape where major deforestation has not yet occurred.

The Guiana Shield is one of the last great wilderness areas of South America, and its rivers remain among the cleanest and least impacted on the continent. As long as those conditions persist, specialist Guiana Shield fishes like Charax rupununi face few imminent threats at the population level. However, gold mining, deforestation pressure, and infrastructure development in southern Guyana and the Brazilian state of Pará represent long-term risks to the intact river systems on which this and hundreds of other endemic fishes depend.
