Copella callolepis is a small, peaceful pencilfish relative from the Amazon basin, reaching roughly 1.5 in in males. Belonging to the subfamily Pyrrhulininae within the family Lebiasinidae, it inhabits still to slow-flowing forest streams and flooded forest across a wide swath of South American river systems — from the Ucayali and Putumayo to the Madeira and the Amazon estuary in Pará. Regularly confused with the more familiar Copella nattereri and Copella meinkeni in the trade, it rewards close attention with subtly beautiful, iridescent scaling that gives the species its name.

Taxonomy & naming

Copella callolepis was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912. The valid name is rendered with a parenthetical authority — (Regan, 1912) — indicating that the species has been moved from the genus to which Regan first assigned it; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) serves as the governing reference for the current placement in Copella.

The genus Copella belongs to the subfamily Pyrrhulininae within the family Lebiasinidae — the pencilfish and splash tetra family of South and Central America. A comprehensive taxonomic review of Copella by Marinho & Menezes (2017) — published in PLoS ONE — provided updated identification keys and clarified the limits of several species that had long been conflated in both the scientific and hobby literature. That review underscored how frequently C. callolepis is misidentified as C. nattereri or C. meinkeni in the aquarium trade, species that overlap broadly in general appearance but differ in scalation and distributional range.

Morphology

Copella callolepis is a slender, elongated fish typical of the Copella shape: a slightly compressed, cylindrical body with a pointed snout, large eyes, and an upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the water surface. Males reach approximately 1.5 in standard length; females are smaller, typically around 1 in SL. As in other Copella species, males tend to develop more vivid patterning and slightly longer fins.

The species epithet callolepis — from the Greek kalos (beautiful) and lepis (scale) — draws attention to its scalation, which carries a fine iridescence visible under good lighting. The overall body coloration is a warm tan to golden-brown, with the characteristic scale edges producing a reticulate or net-like pattern across the flanks. A dark horizontal stripe may run from the eye toward the caudal peduncle, a feature common across the genus. The fins are generally translucent, sometimes with pale yellow or reddish tints in well-conditioned males.

Habitat

In the wild, Copella callolepis occupies still to slow-flowing lowland waters: forest streams, flooded forest (igapó), and backwater pools throughout the Amazon basin. Documented localities include the rio Ucayali, rio Putumayo, rio Amazonas, rio Madeira, and the Amazon estuary region in Pará, Brazil — a range spanning both Peruvian and Brazilian portions of the basin.

The preferred habitat is shaded, heavily vegetated water with abundant leaf litter and overhanging riparian vegetation. Water conditions in these environments are typically soft and acidic: FishBase records a pH range of 6.0–7.0 and hardness of 0–8 dH, while Seriously Fish notes conditions of pH 4.0–7.0 and hardness of 18–143 ppm in the natural range, with temperatures between 20 and 82 °F. The Marinho & Menezes review confirms a consistent preference for still to slow-flowing forest stream microhabitats across the genus.

Feeding

Copella callolepis is a micropredator, taking zooplankton and small invertebrates — particularly tiny insects and their larvae — from the surface and subsurface zone. The upturned mouth is an adaptation for surface feeding, and the species is naturally suited to intercepting prey that falls onto or rests at the water surface in shaded forest conditions.

In the aquarium, it readily accepts appropriately sized live and frozen foods: Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii, Moina, grindal worms, and small insects are all noted as suitable prey items. Feeding small amounts of varied live or frozen invertebrates consistently is the best approach both for health and to bring the fish into good breeding condition. The species is unlikely to accept large prepared foods with enthusiasm, though finely crushed flake or micro-pellets can supplement live and frozen items.

Mating

Copella callolepis breeds by depositing adhesive eggs onto submerged vegetation or other surfaces, following the general Lebiasinidae pattern of plant-associated spawning with brief but structured pairing behaviour. Males court females actively, and spawning is typically preceded by the male displaying alongside the female, with lateral posturing that shows off his coloration and finnage.

Unlike the famous splash tetras (Copella arnoldi), which deposit eggs above the waterline on overhanging leaves, C. callolepis spawns submerged, placing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or on other submerged substrates. After spawning, the male takes on a guarding role, attending the egg mass — a behaviour documented for the species via FishBase — which distinguishes Copella from the egg-scattering genera with which it shares the subfamily.

Breeding

Copella callolepis has been bred in captivity, though it is not among the most commonly propagated Lebiasinids in the hobby. Spawning occurs over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops; the adhesive eggs are deposited in small batches and then guarded by the male. Females are best removed after spawning to reduce stress and the risk of egg predation.

Incubation times vary with temperature; within the recommended range of roughly 68–82 °F, eggs hatch within a few days. The fry are small and require appropriately tiny first foods — infusoria or rotifers initially, followed by Artemia nauplii as they grow. Soft, acidic, clean water conditions replicate the natural environment and tend to improve hatch rates and fry survival. The male's egg-guarding behaviour continues through early incubation, though he should be removed once eggs show signs of hatching to avoid predation on the emerging fry.

In the aquarium

Copella callolepis is described as a peaceful species, but one not ideally suited to the standard mixed community aquarium — Seriously Fish notes it is unsuitable for general community tanks, primarily because its small size and surface-oriented feeding style make it easily outcompeted by larger or more boisterous tankmates. It is best kept in a species tank or alongside other small, similarly sized and peaceful Amazonian fish: dwarf cichlids, small Corydoras, or other Lebiasinids.

The aquarium should reflect the species' natural habitat: soft, slightly acidic water (pH 4.0–7.0; hardness as low as practical), temperature in the range of 68–82 °F, dim to moderate lighting, and generous plantings of fine-leaved aquatic plants along with some floating cover. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as Copella species are skilled surface-skimmers and jumpers. A small species group of six or more individuals is preferable to a single pair, allowing natural social behaviour and reducing individual stress.

Conservation

Copella callolepis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published on 11 September 2020. The species' broad distribution across the Amazon basin — spanning multiple large river systems in Brazil and Peru — means it does not face the range-restriction vulnerability that threatens more narrowly endemic Amazonian fishes.

Nonetheless, the wider Amazon ecosystem faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, water quality degradation, and habitat modification, all of which affect the still-water and flooded-forest microhabitats that species like C. callolepis depend on. The species' tendency to be misidentified in the trade as C. nattereri or C. meinkeni means that reliable data on collection pressure for this specific taxon are difficult to obtain. Hobby interest in correct identification and in sourcing captive-bred stock where available remains a positive contribution to the long-term picture for small Amazonian pencilfish relatives.
