Copella nattereri is a small, surface-dwelling pencilfish relative from the Amazon and Orinoco basins, instantly recognisable by the column of red-purple spots that runs along each flank scale, a dark lateral stripe extending to the caudal base, and a distinctive black triangular mark on the lower rays of the tail. Rarely more than 2 in in standard length, it haunts tannin-stained forest streams and flooded marginal vegetation, where males guard clutches of adhesive eggs laid on submerged leaves — a simple but charming spawning behaviour that makes it rewarding in a well-planted, species-oriented aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Copella nattereri was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1876 and was placed in Pyrrhulina before transfer to Copella; the authority is therefore written in parentheses — (Steindachner, 1876) — reflecting that generic reassignment. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records Copella nattereri as the valid name, with Pyrrhulina nattereri as a synonym.

The genus Copella belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, the pencilfishes and their allies, which also contains Nannostomus, Lebiasina, and the famous splashing tetra Copella arnoldi. Copella nattereri has been confused in the hobby with Copella callolepis and C. meinkeni and resembles C. nigrofasciata, from which it is separated by the number of lateral red-spot rows: nattereri carries at most three rows, whereas nigrofasciata shows five or six. The species has occasionally been misidentified in trade shipments, and earlier literature records sometimes conflate it with its congeners.

Morphology

Copella nattereri is a slender, elongate fish reaching about 2 in standard length in males and approximately 1.5 in in females — females being slightly smaller and less intensely coloured. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, suited to hovering just beneath the surface film in calm or slow-moving water.

The most striking feature is the pattern of dark spots, each with a bright red to red-purple centre, distributed across the flank scales; in good light these spots create a bejewelled effect along the sides. A dark lateral stripe runs from the head to the base of the caudal fin, and the lower caudal lobe is marked with a black triangular patch on its ventral rays — a field mark that helps distinguish the species from close relatives. The lateral line carries 23 to 24 scales. Males in breeding condition display extended, more elaborate finnage and deeper colouration than females, though both sexes carry the distinctive spotting.

Habitat

Copella nattereri ranges across the middle and upper Amazon basin (including Peru and western Brazil), the Rio Negro drainage, the upper Orinoco in Venezuela, and the Rio Branco system in Guyana. Type localities referenced in the literature extend from the lower Amazon near Óbidos to the mouth of the Rio Negro.

In nature the species occupies slow-moving forest streams, small tributaries, and flooded marginal forest during the high-water season — habitat characterised by overhanging riparian vegetation, dense leaf litter, and tannin-stained, tea-coloured water with low mineral content and acidic to neutral pH. Water temperatures in these habitats typically run between 20 and 82 °F, pH from around 4.0 up to 7.0, and hardness is generally low. The surface orientation is strong: Copella nattereri spends most of its time at or just below the water surface, beneath the canopy of emergent and overhanging plants.

Feeding

Copella nattereri is a micropredator. In the wild it feeds on tiny aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and zooplankton taken at and near the surface — small insects, their larvae, and microcrustaceans drifting in the surface film.

In the aquarium it adjusts readily to prepared foods but benefits from regular offerings of small live and frozen invertebrates: Artemia nauplii, Moina, Daphnia, and grindal worms are all accepted and help maintain colour and breeding condition. Dried foods — finely crushed flake and micropellets — are taken, but a diet relying on them alone leaves the fish less vibrant and less likely to spawn. Because of its small mouth and surface-skimming habit, food should be sized and offered at the water surface or upper column.

Mating

Copella nattereri is an egg-depositing species in which the male takes sole responsibility for guarding the nest site. Spawning typically occurs on the surface of a submerged or partly submerged leaf or on other flat plant material; the pair court near the chosen site, where the male displays his extended finnage and intensified colouration to the female.

After spawning, the male remains stationed at the egg mass and fans and defends the eggs throughout incubation. This degree of paternal involvement distinguishes Copella from the purely egg-scattering habits of many related lebiasinids and makes pair observation in the aquarium particularly engaging. Males are mildly territorial around nest sites during the breeding period but are otherwise peaceful members of a small species group.

Breeding

Adhesive eggs are deposited on a leaf or plant surface and guarded by the male for an incubation period of roughly 36 to 72 hours, after which the fry hatch. Once hatching is complete, the male should be removed, as he will prey on the free-swimming fry if left in the breeding tank.

The fry are tiny and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Water quality during rearing should be excellent and changes gentle. Breeding is considered moderately difficult in the hobby — the species is not commonly available in trade, and successful reproduction requires careful attention to water chemistry (soft, acidic conditions and the right plant furnishings for egg deposition) and a willingness to manage the broodstock carefully around hatch time. Lifespan in captivity is reported at around five years under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Copella nattereri is a peaceful, surface-orientated species best kept in a small group of eight to ten individuals in an aquarium of at least 60 × 12 in footprint (roughly 15 US gal), with subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and plenty of fine-leaved floating and rooted plants to provide shade and surface cover. The tank must be securely covered: the species is an accomplished jumper, and uncovered aquaria are a reliable source of losses.

Soft, acidic water — pH 4.0–7.0, hardness 18–90 ppm — and temperatures of 68–82 °F mimic the forest-stream conditions the fish comes from and are important for long-term health and breeding. Despite its peaceful temperament, Copella nattereri is not well suited to busy, heavily stocked community aquaria; it is easily outcompeted for food by faster or more assertive tankmates and does best in a species tank or with small, similarly placid companions of comparable size. The species is rare in the trade and is primarily maintained by specialist hobbyists.

Conservation

Copella nattereri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment). The species has a broad distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and is not subject to the severe range restrictions that threaten more narrowly endemic Neotropical characoids.

However, its dependence on structurally intact forest streams and flooded marginal habitat means that large-scale deforestation and agricultural conversion throughout Amazonia and the Llanos represent an ongoing, diffuse threat to the microhabitat quality on which it relies. The species is uncommon in the aquarium trade, and most specimens encountered are wild-caught, as it has not been established as a widely bred hobby fish. Aquarists who succeed in breeding it contribute to a modest captive reserve of a species rarely seen outside its natural range.
