Copella compta is the largest species in its genus — a slender, blackwater pencilfish reaching nearly 3 in in males — and one of the most ornate, the scales of the body catching the light with a subtle iridescence that belies its quiet, dark-water origins. Endemic to the upper Rio Negro drainage of Brazil and Venezuela, where it inhabits clear, acid streams with tea-dark tannin-stained water, it occupies the same blackwater universe as cardinal tetras and dwarf cichlids but is far less commonly seen in shops. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020, the species remains a prize for the specialist hobbyist willing to match its demanding water-quality requirements.

Taxonomy & naming

Copella compta was originally described by George S. Myers in 1927, placed in a genus then understood more broadly and later reorganised — the parenthetical authority reflects that subsequent generic reassignment. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Copella compta (Myers, 1927), and the species is placed within the family Lebiasinidae, the pencil- and splash-tetras of South America.

The genus Copella belongs to the subfamily Pyrrhulininae within Lebiasinidae and is best known to aquarists through Copella arnoldi, the splash tetra, whose unique habit of depositing eggs above the waterline on overhanging leaves sets it apart from every other freshwater fish. C. compta does not share that extreme behaviour; it is an open-water spawner in the more conventional Lebiasinid mould. Among the Copella species, C. compta is notable for being the largest member of the genus, with male maximum standard length reported at nearly 2.5 in — noticeably bigger than most congeners.

Morphology

Copella compta is a slender, torpedo-shaped fish with the elongated body plan typical of its genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in in males and 2 in SL in females, making it the largest Copella species — males are appreciably longer and more robust than females. The body is laterally compressed but not deep, and the head is small with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface feeding.

The dorsal fin carries 8 soft rays and the anal fin 9, counts typical for the genus. Coloration in males is striking for the family: the body scales have an iridescent, almost golden or copper sheen against a warm brown or olive base, with a dark lateral stripe running from the snout toward the caudal peduncle, and fin extensions in dominant males that add to their ornate appearance. Females are smaller, plainer, and more uniformly brown-silver, with less fin development — sexual dimorphism in size and colour is marked, as in most Copella species.

Habitat

Copella compta is endemic to the upper Rio Negro system, with records from upstream of São Gabriel da Cachoeira in Brazil and from adjacent Venezuelan drainages. The upper Rio Negro is one of the great blackwater river systems of the Amazon basin — its waters are extraordinarily soft and acidic, stained dark brown by dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from the surrounding forest soils, with almost negligible mineral content.

The species inhabits clear, acid, blackwater streams: small, shaded forest watercourses where light filters through the canopy and the substrate is typically sand or leaf litter. Water parameters in this region are extreme by the standards of most tropical fishkeeping — pH values below 5 are not unusual, conductivity may be near zero, and temperatures typically run in the low to mid 20s Celsius. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the water column rather than being strictly bottom-associated, and is likely most active in the upper to mid column where insect prey falls onto the surface.

Feeding

Like other members of the family Lebiasinidae, Copella compta is a micro-predator with a small, upturned mouth adapted to picking invertebrates from the water surface and the water column. In the wild the diet consists primarily of small insects, zooplankton, and other tiny invertebrates available in the stream environment. The mouth anatomy and surface-feeding posture are consistent with a specialist in fallen or trapped surface insects.

In the aquarium, Copella compta and its congeners are best fed live and frozen small foods: brine shrimp, Cyclops, Daphnia, and Tubifex are the standard staples in the hobby for this family. The small mouth limits acceptance of larger prepared foods, and while some individuals will take fine flake or micropellets, condition and colouration are invariably better when live or frozen foods make up a significant portion of the diet. Multiple small feedings per day are preferable to one large meal, and surface-falling foods are taken most eagerly.

Mating

Copella compta reproduces by open-water egg-scattering — the standard mode for most Lebiasinidae, in contrast to the extraordinary surface-spawning behaviour of its congener Copella arnoldi. Males display to females with fin-spreading and body posturing, and courtship involves the male manoeuvring alongside or below the female before the pair release gametes in the water column or over fine-leaved aquatic plants.

Sexual dimorphism facilitates identification of breeding candidates: males are notably larger and more vividly coloured, with more developed fins, while females show a visibly rounded abdomen when carrying eggs. Spawning activity in related Copella species tends to correlate with seasonal rainfall cycles in the wild; in the aquarium, conditioning on live foods and performing a water change with slightly cooler, soft water can help trigger spawning behaviour.

Breeding

Breeding Copella compta in captivity is achievable but demands attention to water chemistry — the very soft, acid conditions of its blackwater habitat are not merely optimal but effectively required for reliable spawning and egg viability. A separate breeding tank set up with very soft (near-zero hardness), acid water (pH 5.5–6.5), a dark substrate, and fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or spawning mops provides the right conditions. Temperatures in the range of 75–79 °F suit the species.

Eggs are adhesive and deposited among fine-leaved plants; in related Lebiasinidae they typically hatch within 24–36 hours at breeding temperature, with fry becoming free-swimming after a further few days. The adults do not guard the eggs and may eat them, so removal of the spawning medium or transfer of the parents after spawning is standard practice. First foods for the tiny fry are infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) as the fry grow. The challenge in captive breeding lies less in the spawning act itself than in raising fry successfully through the early weeks.

In the aquarium

Copella compta is a specialist fish for the dedicated blackwater aquarium keeper. Its non-negotiable requirement for very soft, acid water — replicating the near-distilled, humic-acid-rich conditions of the upper Rio Negro — places it outside the reach of aquarists in hard-water areas who cannot or do not treat their supply water. Reverse osmosis with remineralisation using blackwater extracts (alder cones, Indian almond leaves, peat filtration) is the practical path to the correct chemistry, targeting pH 5.5–6.5 and conductivity well under 100 µS/cm.

Beyond water chemistry the species is peaceful and well-suited to a quiet community of similarly sized, blackwater-compatible fishes: small Apistogramma, pencil tetras, hatchetfishes, and other Copella species make appropriate companions. The tank should be well-planted, dimly lit, and furnished with leaf litter and driftwood to provide cover and further acidify the water. A soft substrate and no strong current complete the biotope. Copella compta is an active surface-oriented fish and may jump, so a close-fitting lid is advisable. Because it is uncommonly available in the hobby, most specimens are wild-caught, making the water-quality match particularly important for acclimatisation and long-term health.

Conservation

Copella compta was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List in September 2020. The listing reflects a species whose range, while geographically restricted to the upper Rio Negro region, falls within a relatively intact and extensive blackwater river system that remains among the less-degraded major Amazonian drainages. The Rio Negro headwaters in the Guiana Shield region of Brazil and Venezuela retain much of their original forest cover, and the species does not face the acute habitat destruction that threatens fishes in more heavily converted river systems.

Nonetheless, the upper Rio Negro is not without pressures: illegal gold mining (garimpagem) causes localised water contamination, river sedimentation, and mercury pollution in parts of the basin, and the region's Indigenous territories and protected areas provide the primary legal safeguard for its waters. The ornamental fish trade takes some wild Copella compta, but collection pressure on this species specifically appears modest. The IUCN Least Concern status is considered appropriate given current knowledge, though monitoring of blackwater stream conditions in the region remains important.
