Taxonomy & naming
Creagrutus ephippiatus was described by Richard P. Vari and Andrew S. Harold in 2001 within their comprehensive phylogenetic revision of the genera Creagrutus Günther and Piabina Reinhardt, published in Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology 613. That monograph recognised 64 species within Creagrutus, of which 37 were new to science; C. ephippiatus was among the new descriptions, assigned to the cis-Andean clade — the assemblage of species distributed east of the Andes. The valid name is Creagrutus ephippiatus Vari & Harold, 2001.
Creagrutus belongs to the large and diverse family Characidae, the characins, which spans the Neotropical and African regions. Some workers have placed certain Creagrutus species within the subfamily Stevardiinae (or assigned the broader group to the family Stevardiidae), but as listed on FishBase and in current broad usage the genus remains within Characidae. As with many genera in this hyperdiverse family, phylogenetic relationships within Creagrutus continue to be refined as additional molecular and morphological data accumulate.
Morphology
Creagrutus ephippiatus reaches approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL), the maximum recorded on FishBase. It is a slender, fusiform small characid, typical of the elongate body plan seen across the cis-Andean Creagrutus species, adapted to navigating the swift-to-moderate current environments of Andean-foothill and upper-Amazonian drainages.
The most diagnostic feature, and the source of the species name, is a pair of saddle-like dark humeral marks — melanophore concentrations on the flank just behind the pectoral-fin insertion — that are prominent enough to meet or nearly meet along the dorsal midline, giving the fish the appearance of wearing a saddle. This humeral marking pattern distinguishes C. ephippiatus from congeners in its range. Otherwise the body is silver, with the lateral line, fin counts, and scale rows characteristic of the genus. Precise meristic data (scale counts, fin-ray counts) are recorded in the 2001 description but are not reproduced here from memory.
Habitat
The type locality of Creagrutus ephippiatus is in the Oriente — the eastern (Amazonian) lowland and foothill region of Ecuador. Paratypes were deposited in collections from Venezuela and Colombia, suggesting a broader distribution across cis-Andean drainages of northwestern South America, though the full extent of its range has not been mapped in detail.
As a FishBase category of benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish, C. ephippiatus inhabits the lower reaches of the water column in warm, slow-to-moderate freshwater environments typical of the upper Amazon basin and its tributaries. The forest streams and small rivers of the eastern Andes foothills that characterise this species' range are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, though substrate and chemistry vary considerably across its apparent distribution. Detailed habitat documentation for this species specifically is sparse in the published literature.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding study has been published for Creagrutus ephippiatus. Diet inference rests on the feeding ecology of the genus broadly and on the typical small-characid feeding guild of the Amazonian forest-stream fauna.
Creagrutus species are generally considered opportunistic micropredators, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — and supplementing with algae, plant matter, and fine organic particles depending on availability. In the Andean-foothill habitats where C. ephippiatus occurs, allochthonous (forest-derived) inputs of insects are often the dominant food source for small fishes, particularly during periods of high leaf-fall or rainfall.
Mating
No published accounts of mating behaviour specific to Creagrutus ephippiatus exist in the available literature. The species has not been maintained in the aquarium hobby to any documented degree, so observations from captivity are likewise absent.
By analogy with other Creagrutus species and small characids more broadly, C. ephippiatus is presumed to be a non-guarding, open-water egg scatterer. Small characids in general broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over the substrate, with no parental care and no lasting pair bond. Whether spawning is tied to seasonal rainfall or water-temperature cues in this species' montane-foothill habitat is unknown.
Breeding
Creagrutus ephippiatus is not established in the ornamental fish trade and has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions. Breeding biology is therefore inferred from the broader Creagrutus and Characidae patterns.
Small Neotropical characids typically deposit small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or submerged root masses, with incubation times varying by temperature. Parental care is absent in the family generally. Given the species' small adult size — around 2.5 in SL — any eggs would likely be correspondingly small, and fry would require fine first foods. Until the species is collected and established in dedicated study or in the hobby, specific breeding parameters remain undocumented.
In the aquarium
Creagrutus ephippiatus is not a hobbyist fish and is not available in the ornamental trade. It has been collected for scientific purposes in connection with the 2001 revision and associated surveys, but it has not entered mainstream aquarium keeping.
Should the species ever become available, the husbandry template of other small cis-Andean Creagrutus would apply: a well-filtered aquarium with moderate current, warm soft-to-moderately-hard water, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates. Its small size (under 2.5 in SL) would make it suitable for a species or community tank with similarly sized, peaceful fishes. In practice, the species remains a scientific specimen rather than an aquarium subject.
Conservation
Creagrutus ephippiatus is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in November 2020. The Data Deficient designation indicates that insufficient information is available to assign a threat category — not that the species is necessarily secure. Given the patchy survey coverage of Andean-foothill and upper-Amazonian stream faunas, many newly described Creagrutus species carry this status.
The Andean-foothill drainages where C. ephippiatus occurs face ongoing threats common across the region: deforestation for agriculture and cattle pasture, pesticide and sediment runoff from adjacent land, and the expansion of oil extraction and road infrastructure in the Ecuadorian and Colombian Oriente. Small, potentially range-restricted stream fishes are particularly vulnerable to local habitat loss. Until systematic surveys document population size and distribution across its range, the conservation outlook for C. ephippiatus cannot be assessed with confidence.
