Creagrutus flavescens was described by Richard P. Vari and Arthur S. Harold in 2001 in their monographic treatment of the genus Creagrutus, which reorganised the group and erected numerous new species. The citation is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Vari & Harold, 2001: 104, fig. 41. The species is currently considered valid, with the type locality in the Venezuela region of the eastern Andean piedmont.
Creagrutus is a large genus of small to medium-sized characids distributed across the Pacific and Atlantic slope drainages of South America, from Panama south to Bolivia. The genus belongs to the family Characidae but its internal placement has been debated; some workers have associated Creagrutus with the Stevardiinae, though the family assignment under the Catalog of Fishes remains Characidae. The specific epithet flavescens is a Latin present participle meaning 'becoming yellow' or 'yellowish,' likely referencing a yellowish cast in the preserved or live coloration of the type specimens.
Morphology
Creagrutus flavescens is a small, fusiform characid reaching approximately 3–3.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase; a slightly lower maximum of roughly 3 in SL has been recorded in the Check List of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, the discrepancy likely reflecting sex- or size-class differences in the measured material. Like other Creagrutus, it has the typical characid body plan: a moderately compressed, streamlined body, a small adipose fin posterior to the dorsal, and a forked caudal fin.

Creagrutus flavescens is virtually absent from the commercial aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of specialised importers dealing in rare Neotropical species. It has no widely established common name, which itself reflects its low profile in the hobby. Should it become available, the species would best suit a biotope aquarium mimicking its Andean foothill stream habitat: well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water, a fine gravel or sand substrate with smooth stones, and subdued planting.
Water parameters consistent with the piedmont drainages of Venezuela — warm, soft to moderate hardness, slightly acidic to neutral — would provide appropriate conditions. As a small characid, it would be compatible with similarly sized, peaceful fish from the same ecoregion. Given the lack of specific husbandry data, keepers should exercise caution and observe the fish closely to refine care conditions.

Creagrutus flavescens is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded as of 09 October 2014.
