Creagrutus gracilis was described by Richard P. Vari and Alison S. Harold in their comprehensive phylogenetic study and revision of Creagrutus and Piabina, published in 2001 as volume 613 of the Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology. That monograph treated the cis-Andean species of these genera systematically for the first time, combining morphological analysis with detailed locality records. The type locality is the Santiago River at La Poza (4°01′S, 77°47′W), Condorcanqui Province, Amazonas, Peru. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Creagrutus gracilis Vari & Harold, 2001.
Creagrutus is the largest genus in the family Characidae by species count and is endemic to the Neotropics, ranging from Panama south through the Andean piedmont and Amazon basin. The genus sits within the subfamily Stevardiinae, a large and morphologically heterogeneous group of characids. C. gracilis is placed among the cis-Andean species — those occurring on the east-facing slopes and lowland drainages of the Andes rather than in the Pacific coastal systems.
Morphology
Creagrutus gracilis is a small, elongate characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in for male or unsexed specimens, consistent with the slender body form implied by the specific epithet gracilis (Latin for slender or graceful). Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan: a laterally compressed, moderately streamlined fish with the characteristic adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins.
Detailed morphological diagnosis is provided in the Vari and Harold (2001) revision, which distinguishes C. gracilis from congeners by a combination of meristic characters including lateral-line scale counts, fin ray counts, and the proportions of head and body. Coloration in life has not been widely documented; preserved specimens typical of the genus are pale to silvery with a lateral stripe or diffuse mid-lateral band. Sexual dimorphism is not well characterised in the literature for this species.
Habitat
The IUCN assessment records C. gracilis as inhabiting rivers with fast-flowing, clear water — the cold, well-oxygenated streams draining the eastern Andean cordilleras. The species occurs at elevations between approximately 200 and 2625 ft above sea level, placing it in the piedmont and submontane zone where gradient is high and water clarity typically greater than in lowland floodplain rivers.
Distribution spans the Marañón and broader Amazon basin in Peru and the Napo River basin in Ecuador. Field collections confirm its presence in the Ere–Campuya–Algodón inventory region of northern Peru. Its small size (under 3 in SL), peaceful characid temperament, and preference for clear, well-oxygenated water are traits that would in principle make it suitable for a species or community aquarium, but its rarity and the challenges of collecting fish from submontane Andean rivers mean that dedicated hobbyists with access to specialist importers would be required to obtain it.
Any aquarium setup should prioritise strong filtration producing significant water movement, good oxygenation, and stable cool-to-moderate tropical temperatures consistent with piedmont Andean streams — likely in the range of 68–75 °F, though precise thermal data for the type-locality are not available in the published record. A spacious aquarium with open swimming lanes, fine-leaved plants or dark substrate, and subdued lighting would approximate the clear-water stream habitat. Until the species is better documented, hobbyist accounts are the most accessible route to further understanding its captive requirements.
Conservation
Creagrutus gracilis was assessed by the IUCN Red List in April 2014 (published 2016) by Correa and Ortega Torres and placed in the category Least Concern. The assessment noted a stable population trend. The species' distribution across the Marañón and Napo basins of Peru and Ecuador encompasses a reasonably large area of suitable fast-clear-water habitat, which underpins the LC designation.
No specific threats are identified for C. gracilis in the IUCN documentation. However, the submontane and piedmont drainages of the eastern Andes face growing pressures from deforestation, agricultural conversion, and artisanal gold mining, all of which increase sediment loads and reduce water clarity — conditions adverse to clear-water specialists. The species' endemic occurrence in the region and its dependence on fast, clear rivers mean that long-term monitoring of water quality in the Condorcanqui, Santiago, and Napo drainages would be warranted as land-use pressures intensify.
