Creagrutus hysginus was described in 1994 by A.S. Harold, R.P. Vari, A. Machado-Allison, and F. Provenzano, in a paper published in Copeia (volume 1994). The type locality falls within the river systems of Estados Sucre and Monagas, northeastern Venezuela, draining to the Gulf of Paria. The valid name as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Creagrutus hysginus Harold, Vari, Machado-Allison & Provenzano, 1994; no synonyms are currently recognised.
Creagrutus is a large neotropical characid genus currently numbering several dozen described species, distributed across cis-Andean and trans-Andean drainage systems from Panama south to Bolivia and eastward through the Guiana Shield and Venezuela. Historically placed in the family Characidae, the genus has been subject to successive revisions as molecular and morphological phylogenies clarify the internal arrangement of the family. A species-only or mixed Creagrutus setup would be most appropriate for observing natural behaviour.
