Creagrutus kunturus was described by Richard P. Vari, Andreá S. Harold, and Hernán Ortega in 1995 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 6(4):289–296, based on specimens from the upper Marañón River drainage in western Amazonian Peru and Ecuador. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Creagrutus kunturus Vari, Harold & Ortega, 1995.
The genus Creagrutus Günther, 1864 is a large and taxonomically complex group of New World characids distributed across lowland and foothill rivers of Central and South America. It belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (order Characiformes, family Characidae). Creagrutus species are generally small, benthopelagic, and predatory, with robust jaws suited to capturing invertebrate prey. The genus contains scores of described species and remains under active taxonomic revision, with new species still being described from undersampled Andean-foothill drainages.
Morphology
Creagrutus kunturus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in SL, placing it among the mid-sized members of the genus. Like most Creagrutus, the species lacks the vivid coloration associated with many aquarium characids and presents a more cryptic pattern — silvery flanks with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral spot row and plain fins — appropriate for a fish that spends much of its time near the substrate or mid-water in turbulent Andean-foothill streams. Habitat
