Creagrutus lassoi was formally described by Richard P. Vari and Arlen Suzanne Harold in 2001, as part of a systematic revision of the genus Creagrutus. The type locality lies within the Aroa and Yaracuy river basins on the Caribbean versant of north-central Venezuela. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Creagrutus lassoi Vari & Harold, 2001; because the species was described directly in the genus it currently occupies, the authority is unparenthesised.
The genus Creagrutus Günther, 1864 belongs to the family Characidae and is one of the most species-rich genera of small Neotropical characins, distributed broadly across river basins from Panama south through much of South America. Members of the genus are sometimes grouped informally with other small, stream-dwelling characins that share a benthopelagic lifestyle and streamlined body form. Placement within Characidae is confirmed by morphological and molecular studies; some older sources (and automated databases) reference Stevardiinae or allied subfamilies, but the family-level assignment to Characidae is the current consensus position reflected in Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Creagrutus lassoi is a small characin with the slender, fusiform build typical of the genus — well suited to fast-flowing, rocky mountain streams. As with most Creagrutus species, the body is moderately compressed laterally, the snout is somewhat pointed, and the lateral line is complete. The broader Aroa–Yaracuy drainage region is a biogeographically significant Caribbean-slope system, hydrologically distinct from the larger Orinoco basin to the south. Water conditions in these montane Venezuelan streams are generally soft to moderately mineralised and slightly acidic to neutral, though precise physical-chemical data for the specific localities of C. lassoi are not available in the accessible literature.
Feeding

Water chemistry should trend soft to neutral, consistent with Venezuelan foothill drainages. The species would be best maintained in a small group and fed a varied diet of small live, frozen, and prepared foods.
