Creagrutus lepidus is a small, slender characid from the Caribbean-versant streams of northwestern Venezuela, known only from the Aroa and Urama river basins of Yaracuy State. Reaching barely 2 in in standard length, it inhabits shallow, low-gradient watercourses where it shelters in pools rather than the swifter runs between them. The species was described in 1993 by Vari, Harold, Lasso and Machado-Allison from specimens collected in the Río Roa system, a modest tributary that drains toward the Caribbean coast, and it has attracted little attention from the aquarium hobby since.

Taxonomy & naming

Creagrutus lepidus was formally described in 1993 by Richard P. Vari, Anthony S. Harold, Carlos A. Lasso, and Antonio Machado-Allison in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 4, number 4, pages 351–356). The type locality is the Río Roa system in Yaracuy State, Venezuela, part of the Caribbean versant drainage — streams that descend the northern slopes of the Venezuelan coastal cordillera and discharge directly to the Caribbean rather than to the Orinoco system.

The genus Creagrutus Günther, 1864 is a species-rich assemblage of small to medium-sized characiforms distributed widely across South America and Central America. Many authorities now place it within the family Stevardiidae rather than the broad family Characidae, following phylogenetic revisions of the order Characiformes; however, Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the placement of several Creagrutus species in this context, and the family Characidae is retained here in its traditional, inclusive sense for consistency with the broader atlas data. The specific epithet lepidus is Latin for 'charming' or 'elegant.'

Morphology

Creagrutus lepidus is a small fish, recorded to a maximum standard length of 2 in. Like other members of the genus it has a slender, streamlined body suited to life in flowing water, with the characteristic compressed flank profile of a characid. Meristic counts published in the original description and recorded by FishBase include eight dorsal soft rays and 11 to 13 anal soft rays; vertebral count is 34 to 35.

No detailed colour description is available in the literature cached for this account. Genus members are typically silvery to pale brown on the flanks, often with a diffuse lateral stripe or a dark shoulder blotch, and the fins are largely hyaline. Sexual dimorphism in external coloration has not been described for this species, and size differences between the sexes are not documented in available sources.

Habitat

The species is known from the Aroa and Urama river basins in Yaracuy State, on the Caribbean versant of the Venezuelan coastal cordillera. These are relatively short rivers that descend steep northern slopes before crossing lowland agricultural terrain to reach the coast. The Río Roa system, the type locality, is one of the smaller drainages in this region.

FishBase records Creagrutus lepidus as benthopelagic, occurring at depths to 10 ft, and notes that it is more abundant in pools than in sections of rapid current — suggesting a preference for calmer microhabitats within the stream channel. The tropical temperature range recorded by FishBase is 77–102 °F, though the upper limit likely reflects the maximum ambient temperature of the drainage basin rather than the species' preferred conditions. No water chemistry data (pH, hardness) are available for natural occurrences.

Feeding

No dietary data specific to Creagrutus lepidus appear in the published literature available for this account. Members of the genus Creagrutus are generally considered opportunistic predators of small invertebrates, taking aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial arthropods that fall to the water surface — a foraging strategy typical of small, drift-feeding characids in Neotropical streams.

In an aquarium context, congeners accept prepared foods including small sinking pellets and granules, as well as frozen and live invertebrate prey such as Daphnia and brine shrimp nauplii. A varied diet is advisable for any small Creagrutus in captivity, but no published captive-husbandry data exist for this species.

Mating

No reproductive or mating data have been published for Creagrutus lepidus specifically. FishBase records no reproduction data for the species. By analogy with other Stevardiidae and Creagrutus relatives, some members of this group are notable among characiforms for exhibiting internal insemination rather than simple broadcast spawning — a reproductive mode documented across the broader clade containing the genus.

Whether C. lepidus itself employs internal insemination or conventional external fertilization is not established in the literature examined for this account. No courtship behavior has been described, and the species has not been bred in the aquarium to the authors' knowledge.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has not been reported for Creagrutus lepidus, and no clutch-size, incubation, or fry-rearing data appear in the sources available for this account. If the genus follows the broader Stevardiidae pattern of internal insemination, fertilization occurs internally before eggs are deposited, which would distinguish it from the egg-scattering open spawning typical of many Neotropical tetras; however, this has not been confirmed for this species.

For aquarists who might attempt to breed this fish, the general approach for small Neotropical characids would apply as a starting point: a well-planted tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, a conditioning diet of live and frozen invertebrates, and separation of eggs or fry from adults to prevent predation. Data sparse — care recommendations should be treated as provisional until species-specific observations are available.

In the aquarium

Creagrutus lepidus is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. Its small size — under 2 in — and its likely peaceful disposition toward other species of similar size would make it suitable for a Neotropical biotope aquarium representing Venezuelan Caribbean-slope streams if it were available. Genus-level care notes for the better-known C. beni suggest that Creagrutus species appreciate dense planting, hiding places, and subdued lighting, along with good water movement to replicate the stream conditions they inhabit.

Water temperature in the Aroa and Urama basins can be high by stream-fish standards; a range of approximately 75–82 °F would be a reasonable starting point in captivity. As data on this species are sparse, any aquarist fortunate enough to work with it would be contributing meaningfully to knowledge of its captive requirements.

Conservation

Creagrutus lepidus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its restricted distribution in the Aroa and Urama river basins of Yaracuy State places it in a region of Venezuela where lowland agricultural conversion, water extraction for sugar-cane and other crops, and urbanization near the Caribbean coast have affected stream habitats. However, no population surveys or threat assessments have been published for the species.

The Venezuelan Caribbean versant is a biogeographically distinct region whose small endemic fish fauna is generally understudied relative to the Orinoco basin. A formal IUCN assessment of C. lepidus, along with surveys to clarify its range and abundance, would be a valuable step toward understanding whether the species faces any conservation concern.
