Creagrutus muelleri is a small, slender characid endemic to the freshwaters of western Ecuador, where it inhabits the clear, fast-flowing streams draining the Andean foothills. Originally described by Albert Günther in 1859 under the name Leporinus muelleri, it later became the type species of the genus Creagrutus by monotypy — making it the yardstick against which all other members of one of South America's more speciose small-characid genera are measured. Taxonomy & naming

Creagrutus muelleri was originally described by Albert Günther in 1859 as Leporinus muelleri, with the type locality given as the Andes of western Ecuador.
