Creagrutus seductus was formally described by Richard P. Vari and Andrew S. Harold in 2001, in their comprehensive phylogenetic study and revision of the Neotropical characiform genera Creagrutus Günther and Piabina Reinhardt, published as Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology 613. That monograph treated the cis-Andean species of Creagrutus in detail, and C. seductus appears on page 202 of the revision. The genus Creagrutus belongs to the family Characidae (Ostariophysi: Characiformes), and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Creagrutus seductus Vari & Harold, 2001.
Creagrutus is a species-rich and taxonomically challenging Neotropical genus distributed across much of South America and, through one species, reaching Panama in Central America. The cis-Andean species treated in the 2001 revision represent only a portion of the genus. Because C. seductus was described within Creagrutus and remains there, no parenthetical authority is used. FishBase notes that some sources have historically placed certain Creagrutus-relatives within the family Stevardiidae, but under current taxonomy C. seductus is carried in Characidae.
Morphology
Creagrutus seductus is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3 in, with a paratype specimen measured at 2.5 in SL from the upper Araguaia basin confirming the size range established in the original description. Like other members of the genus, it is a typical small Neotropical characin in overall body plan — laterally compressed, with the dorsal and adipose fins characteristic of the family, a forked tail, and the small teeth and jaw structure associated with its seed-feeding habits.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data for C. seductus are documented in the original Vari and Harold revision. The species is not distinguished by striking colouration in preserved material, and live colouration data from wild specimens are not widely published; it likely resembles other small, silvery Creagrutus in overall appearance. The robust dentition capable of crushing seeds is a diagnostic feature consistent with the species' documented diet.
Habitat
Creagrutus seductus is known from the upper Araguaia River basin in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The Araguaia is a major tributary of the Tocantins system, draining the cerrado (tropical savanna) and transitional forest zones of central Brazil's interior plateau. Unconfirmed records from the high Rio Tocantins in Goiás suggest the species may have a somewhat wider distribution within this drainage network, though these occurrences had not been formally confirmed at the time of the IUCN assessment.
The species occurs in freshwater, benthopelagic habitats typical of the tropical cerrado river system — shallow to moderately deep streams and rivers with seasonal flow variation characteristic of the region. The IUCN notes that the species is considered frequent but not abundant within its range, and that it has been recorded in the Serra Azul State Park, indicating at least partial occurrence within a formally protected area. Any hobbyist keeping this species would be working in largely uncharted territory, and documenting observations would be genuinely useful to the scientific and amateur community.

Creagrutus seductus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The listing reflects the species' reasonably stable status within its known range in the upper Araguaia basin: it is considered frequent, if not abundant, and no significant threats sufficient to trigger a threatened category were detected at the time of assessment.
The species' range includes Serra Azul State Park, providing some degree of formal habitat protection. However, the upper Araguaia and broader Mato Grosso cerrado region face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, particularly soy cultivation and cattle ranching, which drive deforestation and alter river hydrology and water quality across the cerrado biome.
