Taxonomy & naming
Creagrutus veruina was formally described by Richard P. Vari and Alison S. Harold in their 2001 Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology revision of the genus Creagrutus (Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology No. 613, p. 213, Fig. 91). The holotype is deposited at the Museo de Biología de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (MBUCV V-29072), with paratypes at MBUCV and at the United States National Museum of Natural History (USNM 355120). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the name as currently valid with the authority Vari & Harold, 2001.
The species is placed in the family Characidae. Within that family, Catalog of Fishes records Creagrutus in the subfamily Creagrutinae (sometimes treated under the broader Stevardiinae / Stevardiidae in certain phylogenetic arrangements), a clade of small, predominantly benthopelagic South American stream characids. The genus name Creagrutus derives from the Greek kreagreytos, meaning to tear or rip up flesh, an allusion to the dentition of these predatory-grade small fish. The specific epithet veruina has not been parsed in the available literature, but Vari and Harold's 2001 monograph covers the naming rationale for all species treated therein.
Morphology
Creagrutus veruina is a small, slender-bodied characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2 in for unsexed or male specimens, placing it among the smaller members of its genus. Like other Creagrutus, it has the compact, fusiform build typical of active stream characids: a moderately compressed body, a clearly defined lateral line, a forked caudal fin, and the small adipose fin characteristic of the family Characidae.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data for C. veruina are contained in the Vari and Harold (2001) monograph. In the field and in preserved material, Creagrutus species are generally difficult to separate from one another on external appearance alone, and identification often relies on counts of lateral-line scales, fin-ray numbers, and the form of the dentition. No striking sexual colour dimorphism is documented in the primary literature for this species, and live colouration data from the field or captivity are not available in the sources examined.
Habitat
The entire known range of Creagrutus veruina is the Cataniapo River basin in Amazonas state, Venezuela. The Cataniapo is an east-bank tributary that flows into the middle Orinoco; the type locality lies 656 ft above Las Pavas on the Río Cataniapo. This positions the species in the transitional zone between the Orinoco lowlands and the Guiana Highlands foothills, a region of clear, fast-moving, soft and acidic blackwater or clearwater streams typical of the Amazonian-Orinoco border drainages.
Creagrutus species in this region generally inhabit shallow rocky or gravelly runs and pools under riparian forest, where water temperatures reflect shade and moderate elevation — likely in the 72–82 °F range based on comparable drainages, though no specific habitat-water-chemistry data for C. veruina appear in the sources examined. The species is classified as benthopelagic and freshwater by FishBase, consistent with the foraging behaviour of congeners in turbulent, structurally complex stream habitats.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Creagrutus veruina a trophic level of 2.6, consistent with an omnivore or low-level carnivore feeding on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and incidental organic matter. This is the typical feeding guild for small Creagrutus in Orinoco-system streams, where congeners have been documented consuming terrestrial and aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and plant material.
No specific gut-content studies for C. veruina were identified in the sources examined. In common with related species, it is reasonable to infer that the species forages close to the substrate and in the water column for small invertebrate prey, and would accept a variety of small live, frozen, and prepared foods in captivity — though the species is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade.
Mating
No published observations of mating behaviour in Creagrutus veruina are available. Based on the biology of related characids in the subfamily Creagrutinae and the broader family Characidae, the species is expected to be an open egg-scatterer practising no parental care, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate in stream environments.
Mating activity in stream-dwelling characids in the Orinoco drainage is often linked to seasonal rainfall cycles and corresponding changes in water temperature, conductivity, and photoperiod, which cue spawning migrations or localised aggregation behaviour. Without direct field or captivity records for C. veruina, any more specific account of its mating system would be speculative.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Creagrutus veruina have been documented in the available literature or hobby sources. The species has not entered the ornamental fish trade in meaningful numbers, and breeding observations from aquarists are absent.
By analogy with other small Creagrutus and related characids, eggs would be expected to be small, adhesive, and broadcast among fine substrate or plant matter, hatching in a few days at warm tropical temperatures. Fry would require very fine initial foods. Given the species' conservation status and the rarity of wild imports from its restricted Venezuelan range, captive breeding has not been reported and would require dedicated effort to achieve.
In the aquarium
Creagrutus veruina is not established in the aquarium hobby. The genus Creagrutus as a whole is only sporadically available to aquarists, appearing occasionally as bycatch in wild-caught imports from Orinoco or Amazon drainages. C. veruina in particular has a narrow range in a region of Venezuela that is not a major source of ornamental exports, and there are no records of the species being deliberately collected or maintained in captivity.
Aquarists who obtain Creagrutus species generally find them hardy, active, and feeding readily once settled, suited to soft, slightly acidic water at moderate temperatures consistent with their Guiana Highlands provenance. A species this size would be appropriate for a smaller biotope aquarium replicating a Venezuelan clearwater or blackwater stream. However, specific husbandry data for C. veruina cannot be provided from the sources examined, and the species' Near Threatened status makes casual wild collection inadvisable.
Conservation
Creagrutus veruina is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with criteria B1b(iii)+2b(iii), as evaluated on 7 August 2019. The NT listing reflects the species' restricted extent of occurrence — confined to the Cataniapo River basin in Amazonas state, Venezuela — and inferred or projected ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. The B-criterion assessment indicates that both its area of occupancy and its extent of occurrence fall within the threshold ranges for threatened consideration, and that its stream habitat is under continuing pressure.
The Cataniapo basin and broader Amazonas state contain significant portions of intact Orinoco-system forest, but face threats from deforestation, mining (particularly gold extraction in Venezuelan Amazonia), and watershed degradation. A species with as narrow a range as C. veruina has limited buffer against local habitat loss. No specific recovery plans or protected-area designations focused on this species were identified in the sources examined, and it is not a target of captive conservation programmes.
