Creagrutus vexillapinnus is a small, stream-dwelling characid reaching around 2 in standard length, inhabiting the upper Negro and upper Orinoco river basins across northwestern Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. Among the roughly 100 species in the genus Creagrutus, it stands out for a rarely seen character: a prominent dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin, a feature that helped clinch its diagnosis when Richard Vari and Andrew Harold revised the cis-Andean species in 2001. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, it occupies shallow, sandy-bottomed reaches of black-water and slightly murky rivers, including protected land within the Alto Rio Negro indigenous territory.

Taxonomy & naming

Creagrutus vexillapinnus was described by Richard P. Vari and Andrew S. Harold in their 2001 monograph published in Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology (volume 613, pp. 1–239), a comprehensive phylogenetic study and revision of the Neotropical genera Creagrutus and Piabina across the Characiformes. The valid name is Creagrutus vexillapinnus Vari & Harold, 2001, and it is placed in the family Characidae within the order Characiformes. The genus Creagrutus, erected by Albert Günther in the nineteenth century, currently contains well over a hundred species and forms one of the larger and more speciose lineages among the small characids of South America.

The species is readily distinguished from most of its congeners by the presence of a dark blotch at the dorsal fin — an uncommon feature within Creagrutus that the original authors treated as a key diagnostic character. Its distribution in the upper Negro and upper Orinoco basins places it among a group of cis-Andean Creagrutus that were central to the 2001 revision. Taxonomy within the genus remains an active area of ichthyological work, and additional undescribed species continue to be identified in collections.

Morphology

Creagrutus vexillapinnus is a small, slender characid reported to reach a maximum of 2 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has the compressed, fusiform body typical of small stream characids, with a moderately pointed snout, large eyes, and the adipose fin characteristic of the Characiformes.

The most notable external feature is a conspicuous dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin — an unusual marking within Creagrutus and the character most useful for field identification. Body coloration otherwise follows the genus's general pattern of a silvery to pale lateral field with darker dorsal pigmentation, though detailed colour notes for live specimens in the wild are sparse in the published record. The species is small enough to be inconspicuous in its natural habitat and would rarely draw attention in a mixed-species collection from the region.

Habitat

The species is native to the upper Negro River basin in Amazonas state, Brazil, and to the upper portions of the Orinoco River basin across Colombia and Venezuela — a region of ancient, nutrient-poor, lowland tropical rainforest drained by rivers ranging from black-water to slightly turbid. The IUCN assessment records it in shallow areas with sandy bottoms and moderate current, in black to slightly murky water rivers. These are conditions typical of the Guiana Shield drainage system, where tannin-stained, low-conductivity waters with soft, acidic chemistry predominate.

The species occurs within protected areas, including the Alto Rio Negro indigenous land in Amazonas, Brazil, which provides a degree of habitat security not available to many narrow-range Neotropical fishes. Its benthopelagic lifestyle keeps it near the substrate, foraging along and just above sandy stream beds in reaches with flowing water.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 2.5 for Creagrutus vexillapinnus, which places it at the lower end of the consumer spectrum — consistent with a diet of small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus typical of small stream-dwelling characids in the Orinoco and Negro drainages. Detailed dietary studies specific to this species are not available in the published literature.

By analogy with other small Creagrutus species studied in similar habitats, the diet likely includes aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface, supplemented by fine organic matter gleaned from sandy substrates. The relatively low trophic level suggests a foraging strategy that does not depend heavily on prey capable of active escape.

Mating

No species-specific observations of courtship or mating behaviour have been published for Creagrutus vexillapinnus. Like virtually all members of the family Characidae, it is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants, leaf litter, or other submerged substrate.

Small stream characids in the Orinoco and Negro drainages typically show seasonal reproductive activity linked to the wet-season flood pulse, which triggers spawning migrations and provides the inundated forest margins and flooded grasslands that serve as nursery habitat for larvae and juveniles. Whether C. vexillapinnus follows such a pattern has not been documented.

Breeding

Creagrutus vexillapinnus has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no aquarium breeding reports are known. Given the species' small size, natural habitat in low-conductivity black-water streams, and its membership in a genus not targeted by the ornamental trade, captive reproduction has not been attempted or reported in the accessible literature.

Based on general Characidae biology, spawning would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern common to the order: eggs released freely or deposited on fine-leaved plants, hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures, with no parental care and high egg predation risk in a community setting. Soft, slightly acidic water mimicking the black-water conditions of the upper Negro basin would be the logical starting point for any captive attempt.

In the aquarium

Creagrutus vexillapinnus is not an established aquarium fish and is not offered through the ornamental trade. The IUCN notes it is too small to be targeted by subsistence fisheries and is not collected for the aquarium trade. Its natural habitat in remote upper Negro and upper Orinoco headwaters makes collection unlikely, and there is no record of it being maintained or studied in captivity.

For aquarists interested in small Creagrutus species more broadly, the genus presents challenges: these are active, small-bodied stream fish that require well-oxygenated, soft, acidic, low-conductivity water, sandy substrates, and moderate current to replicate their natural conditions. Species-level identification from live specimens is difficult without microscopic examination. As a result, the genus remains almost entirely in the domain of field biology rather than the aquarium hobby.

Conservation

Creagrutus vexillapinnus was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN in March 2021, with the assessment published in 2023. The population trend is recorded as stable. The IUCN notes no obvious threats: the species is not targeted by the aquarium trade and is too small for subsistence fisheries. Its occurrence within the Alto Rio Negro indigenous territory in Amazonas, Brazil, provides meaningful habitat protection across part of its range.

The distribution across three countries — Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela — and across portions of two major drainages gives the species a broader footprint than many narrowly endemic Neotropical characids, reducing the risk from any single localised threat. Continued monitoring of the upper Negro and Orinoco basins is important, as these systems face long-term pressure from deforestation, mining, and climate-driven hydrological shifts, even where formal protection exists.
