Creagrutus xiphos is a diminutive characid from the Mato River in the Caura River basin of Venezuela, one of 37 new species described by Vari and Harold in their landmark 2001 phylogenetic revision of the genus Creagrutus. Reaching barely 1 in in standard length, it belongs to a highly diverse Neotropical group whose members inhabit clear upland tributaries and blackwater streams of the Orinoco drainage. The species has received little attention from aquarists and is rarely encountered outside of ichthyological collections, yet it offers a window into the extraordinary species richness of the Caura River system — one of the most pristine large river basins remaining in South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Creagrutus xiphos was described by Richard P. Vari and Alec S. Harold in 2001 as part of a sweeping monograph on the genus Creagrutus published through the Smithsonian Institution. That revision, available through the Smithsonian's repository, recognised 64 species within Creagrutus in total and formally described 37 species that were new to science, among them C. xiphos. The type locality is the Mato River in the Caura River basin, which forms part of the Orinoco River drainage in Venezuela.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) records the valid name as Creagrutus xiphos Vari & Harold, 2001. The genus Creagrutus belongs to the family Characidae — the largest family of freshwater fishes — and is placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae by some authorities, though family-level and subfamily-level arrangements within the order Characiformes remain the subject of ongoing systematic revision. GBIF cross-references the species with taxon ID 2353732 and accepts the Vari & Harold 2001 authorship.

Morphology

Creagrutus xiphos is a very small fish: FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in for males, placing it among the smaller members of an already modest-sized genus. Like other creagrutines it has the typical characid body plan — a laterally compressed, fusiform shape with an adipose fin, a forked tail, and the characteristic Characiformes trait of lacking fin spines.

Detailed morphological data for C. xiphos beyond size are sparse in the publicly available literature. Within Creagrutus, species are distinguished principally by meristic characters — scale counts, lateral-line pore counts, fin-ray counts, and proportional measurements — rather than by striking colour patterns. Members of the genus are generally silvery to pale bronze with a lateral stripe of variable intensity. Specific diagnostic characters for C. xiphos relative to its congeners were set out in the Vari & Harold (2001) monograph.

Habitat

Creagrutus xiphos is known from the Mato River, a tributary of the Caura River in Venezuela's Bolívar State. The Caura is a right-bank tributary of the Orinoco and one of the least disturbed major river systems in South America, characterised by clear, oligotrophic to blackwater conditions in its upper reaches and a high degree of endemic biodiversity. A review of Caura fishes notes some 400 or more species in the lower elevations below the Salto Para falls near the Orinoco confluence, illustrating the basin's extraordinary ichthyofaunal richness.

FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and freshwater — indicating it occupies the lower water column of rivers rather than truly open water. Creagrutus species in general favour clear to tea-coloured tributary streams with sandy or gravelly substrates, often in forest-shaded reaches with leaf litter and submerged wood. Precise water-chemistry data for the Mato River site are not available in the published record, but the Caura basin broadly exhibits soft, acidic to near-neutral water typical of Orinoco shield tributaries.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Creagrutus xiphos have not been published. Creagrutus as a genus are understood to be generalised opportunistic feeders, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, and other minute prey items available at or near the substrate and in the water column. The diminutive size of C. xiphos — under 1 in SL — restricts prey to correspondingly tiny organisms.

In an aquarium context, a species this small would likely accept appropriately sized live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, micro worms, Daphnia, and finely crushed prepared foods. However, given its near-absence from the hobby, there is little accumulated experience to draw on.

Mating

No species-specific mating or reproductive behavioural data have been published for Creagrutus xiphos. Characids in general are egg-scattering open spawners: males court females, the pair rise briefly into the water column or move among fine-leaved plants, and fertilised eggs are scattered with no further attention from either parent. Adhesive eggs may catch on vegetation or settle among substrate debris.

Within the genus Creagrutus there is no documented parental care or nest-building. Sexual dimorphism in related species tends toward females being deeper-bodied when gravid, while males may display subtle fin or colouration differences during courtship. Data specific to C. xiphos are not available.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Creagrutus xiphos has not been documented in the available literature or hobby record, and the species has not established itself in the ornamental trade. By analogy with other small creagrutines and characids generally, breeding would be expected to follow the typical egg-scattering pattern: spawning over fine-leaved plants or among substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and the need to separate adults from eggs to prevent predation.

Any serious attempt to breed the species would require wild-caught stock from Venezuela — itself logistically challenging — and careful replication of the soft, likely acidic water conditions of the Caura drainage. Incubation times and larval requirements are unknown from published sources; extrapolation from congeners suggests eggs would hatch within a few days at typical tropical temperatures, with small fry requiring infusoria-grade first foods.

In the aquarium

Creagrutus xiphos is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not available in the ornamental fish trade. Its very small adult size (under 1 in SL) would in principle make it suitable for a small, well-planted nano or species aquarium if stock could be obtained. Water conditions replicating the soft, oligotrophic conditions of the Caura drainage — low TDS, slightly acidic to neutral pH, warm temperature — would be a logical starting point.

Given the species' obscurity, hobbyists interested in Creagrutus in general are far more likely to encounter the broader genus through occasional imports of undetermined creagrutines collected alongside more marketable characids. Proper identification to species level within the genus requires reference to the Vari & Harold (2001) monograph and accurate specimen measurements.

Conservation

Creagrutus xiphos is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded by FishBase as dated 10 May 2017. A Data Deficient listing indicates that insufficient information exists to assess the species' extinction risk — not that it is necessarily safe, but that the data needed to evaluate its population size, trend, and threats have not been gathered.

The Caura River basin, where the species was collected, is considered one of the better-preserved large river systems in Venezuela and South America more broadly. However, the basin is not entirely free of pressure: hydroelectric proposals, mining activity, and habitat encroachment have periodically threatened parts of the Orinoco watershed. The narrow known range of C. xiphos — a single river within a single sub-basin — means that localised disturbances could affect the species disproportionately. Broader survey effort and targeted population assessments would be needed before a more informative Red List category could be assigned.
