Taxonomy & naming
Grundulus bogotensis was originally described by Alexander von Humboldt as Poecilia bogotensis in 1821, based on material from the Bogotá area of the Colombian highlands. The name bounced through synonymy — Regan assigned it to Ctenocharax in 1907 — before settling as Grundulus bogotensis, the valid combination confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and the Catalogue of Life. The parenthetical authority records that it was not described under its current genus.
Grundulus is a small genus of highland South American characins placed in the subfamily Grundulinae. FishBase and some modern classifications assign the subfamily to the family Acestrorhamphidae rather than the broader Characidae; however, family-level boundaries among Neotropical characins remain in flux, and Characidae in its broad sense continues to be widely used in the literature. The type locality is the Bogotá River system of the Magdalena basin in the Colombian Cordillera Oriental.
Morphology
Grundulus bogotensis is a slender, fusiform tetra with a somewhat compressed body and a small, upturned mouth adapted for surface or mid-water feeding. FishBase records a maximum length of 3 in standard length, though individuals in the wild commonly measure 1.5–2.5 in total length. The species has a superficially plain coloration: silvery flanks, a dusky dorsal surface, and often a faint lateral stripe that may intensify during display or stress.
Sexual dimorphism is modest. Females tend to be deeper-bodied and fuller in the belly when gravid; males are somewhat slimmer. The fins are hyaline with little colour. As a highland species it lacks the brilliant pigmentation of many lowland tetras, its subtlety a reflection of its cool, often turbid Andean environment rather than any impoverishment of biology.
Habitat
The guapucha is a high-altitude specialist, native to the sabana de Bogotá and the surrounding streams, rivers, and wetlands of the upper Magdalena basin in the Colombian Andes, at elevations typically above 2,1640 ft. At these heights water temperatures are cool — often between 12 and 64 °F — and oxygen levels are lower than at sea level despite the cold. The species inhabits both open standing water and slow to moderately flowing streams, associating strongly with beds of aquatic macrophytes. Research on its spatial distribution confirms that vegetation structure is a key determinant of where it is found within a water body.
The Bogotá savannah wetlands where this tetra lives are among the most transformed landscapes in the Colombian Andes: draining for agriculture and urban expansion has reduced the extent of Andean páramo wetlands dramatically over the past century. Where intact habitat remains, the guapucha can be locally abundant, forming schools in the open water above weed beds. It is endemic to Colombia, and GBIF records 261 georeferenced occurrence points concentrated in the Magdalena headwaters region.
Feeding
FishBase records the guapucha as feeding primarily on crustaceans in the wild, consistent with the small invertebrate-rich micro-habitats of Andean páramo wetlands. At mid-water and near the surface the species likely also takes small insects, zooplankton, and other invertebrates opportunistically — a generalist feeding strategy typical of schooling characins.
In the aquarium it can be offered small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and newly hatched brine shrimp. Finely crushed flake or small micro-pellets are accepted. Because this is a cool-water species, feeding responses may be slower at lower temperatures than aquarists accustomed to tropical tetras expect; offering food at times of higher activity helps ensure adequate intake across the school.
Mating
Grundulus bogotensis is an egg-scattering open spawner in the characin mode, with no parental care reported. Courtship is presumed to involve male pursuit of gravid females into dense aquatic vegetation, the likely site for egg deposition. As with most school-dwelling tetras, spawning in nature probably takes place during periods of peak activity, with multiple males competing to fertilize eggs released by a female moving through weed beds.
Because detailed breeding observations in captivity are sparse in the available literature, fine points of courtship display and mate choice for this species remain poorly documented. The pattern of adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants — standard for Grundulinae — is the working model. Aquarists with experience of this fish in specialist collections report that conditioning pairs or groups on live foods brings females into spawning condition.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Grundulus bogotensis requires replicating its cool, well-oxygenated highland environment, which demands more care than breeding typical tropical tetras. Water temperatures in the 57–64 °F range are appropriate; warmer conditions stress the fish and impair reproduction. A densely planted breeding tank with fine-leaved plants such as hornwort or Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops, provides the egg-laying substrate. Eggs are adhesive and remain among the plants after the spawn.
Adults do not guard eggs and will eat them given the chance, so breeders should remove the parents or move the plants to a separate rearing vessel promptly after spawning. At cool temperatures incubation takes longer than for tropical species; precise figures are not well established in the hobbyist literature. The fry are small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is gradual under the cool conditions the species requires.
In the aquarium
The guapucha is rarely encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade, but it appears occasionally in specialist circles and among aquarists focused on Andean or unusual cold-water characins. Its cool-water requirement — ideally 54–64 °F — places it firmly outside the range of most tropical community tanks and makes it better suited to an unheated or chilled aquarium in a cool room, or a purpose-built cold-water setup. A long, well-filtered tank with good surface movement and dense plantings suits a school of six or more.
Because this is a schooling species it should not be kept singly or in very small numbers; a group of at least six reduces stress and elicits more natural behaviour. Tankmates, if any, must share its cool-temperature preference — coldwater minnows, hillstream loaches, and similarly temperature-matched species are candidates. The fish is sensitive to water quality deterioration, and the biological filtration should be robust given the relatively low temperature at which bacterial activity slows. Data on its long-term captive management in detailed hobbyist accounts are sparse.
Conservation
Grundulus bogotensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2014), reflecting a population that, while restricted to Colombia, occurs across a range of localities within the upper Magdalena basin and has not undergone declines sufficient to trigger a threatened category. Nevertheless, the species faces real and documented threats. The primary biological pressure is predation and competition from introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which has been stocked extensively in Andean Colombian streams for aquaculture and sport fishing and which preys heavily on native small fish. Research specifically on Grundulus bogotensis identifies trout as a major threat factor.
Habitat degradation is the second major pressure. The high-altitude Andean wetlands and páramo streams where this tetra lives have been drastically reduced in extent through drainage for agriculture, urban growth around Bogotá, and water extraction. The combination of shrinking and degraded habitat with an aggressive introduced predator makes local extinctions plausible even if the overall status is currently Least Concern. Conservation of remaining páramo wetlands in the Bogotá savannah and surrounds is the most effective way to protect this endemic highland tetra.
