Grundulus cochae is a diminutive, pelagic characid found in a single high-altitude lake in the southern Colombian Andes — Laguna de la Cocha, sitting at nearly 2,2625 ft above sea level near the city of Pasto. Described in 2003 by Román-Valencia, Paepke and Pantoja, it is known to feed on crustaceans, fly larvae, and snails in the lake's near-shore zones, and it shares its water with introduced rainbow trout whose long-term impact on this strictly endemic fish remains poorly understood. The IUCN assessed it as Near Threatened in 2014, citing a total extent of occurrence of just 40 mi².

Taxonomy & naming

Grundulus cochae was described by Román-Valencia, Paepke and Pantoja in 2003, based on material collected from Laguna de la Cocha in the department of Nariño, Colombia. The holotype (IUQ 453) measures 2 in in length and is deposited at the Ichthyological Collection of the Universidad del Quindío. Additional paratypes are registered under IUQ 454, IUQ 455, and STRI 1369, and the species is listed in the checklist of Colombian freshwater fishes (Maldonado-Ocampo, Vari and Usma, 2008).

The genus Grundulus belongs to the subfamily Grundulinae, which some authorities (including the FishBase species record) place in the family Acestrorhamphidae rather than Characidae sensu stricto; however, Grundulinae is broadly treated within the characid assemblage by many checklists and the IUCN assessment. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name. A taxonomic complication noted in the 2014 IUCN assessment is that Mojica et al. (2012) suggested G. cochae may be a synonym of the Bogotá tetra, Grundulus bogotensis — a question the assessment flags as requiring resolution, since the outcome would affect how the population is managed and assessed.

The genus Grundulus is small and restricted to the high-elevation drainages of the Northern Andes, making G. cochae part of a relictual Andean freshwater fauna with very limited dispersal opportunities.

Morphology

Grundulus cochae is a small fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2.5 in, a size confirmed both by the FishBase record and by the holotype specimen dimensions. It is a slender, ray-finned characid with the laterally compressed body form typical of small open-water or near-surface schooling characins.

Detailed published morphological descriptions of G. cochae beyond the original description and holotype measurements are sparse in accessible secondary literature. As a member of Grundulinae, it can be expected to share the subfamily's general small-bodied, silvery plan suited to pelagic life in cold, clear Andean waters. The holotype image on file in Colombian scientific collections shows a typical slender characid form without pronounced colour markings. Further morphological data awaits a comprehensive revision of the genus.

Habitat

Grundulus cochae is endemic to Laguna de la Cocha (also called La Cocha), a lake in the department of Nariño near Pasto in southern Colombia, situated at an elevation of approximately 2,2654 ft above sea level. The lake lies in the upper Amazon basin, draining eventually via the Río Putumayo, and has an extent of occurrence for this species estimated at just 40 mi².

Within the lake the species occupies near-shore areas close to the surface, including zones with aquatic vegetation such as watercress (Nasturtium officinale), and the substrate in these areas is described as muddy with decaying plant matter. The fish also enters lake tributaries in near-shore habitats. The water at this altitude is cold for a neotropical characid — temperatures are constrained by the high-Andean environment rather than the lowland tropics — and the lake's ecology is influenced by the surrounding Andean páramo ecosystem.

No protected-area coverage is reported for the lake in the context of this species. A sympatric catfish (Eremophilus sp.) shares the system, and introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are present; the IUCN assessment notes that the trout occupy open water while G. cochae uses near-shore zones, but the long-term competitive and predation pressure from trout is not fully evaluated.

Feeding

The IUCN assessment and FishBase record document the diet of Grundulus cochae as primarily crustaceans, supplemented by the larvae and adults of flies, and snails. This positions it as a generalist invertebrate predator in the near-shore and surface zone of its lake habitat, taking advantage of the invertebrate community associated with aquatic vegetation and the water surface.

No detailed stomach-content studies are available in the accessible secondary literature. The crustacean-heavy diet is consistent with the cladoceran and copepod communities typical of cold, high-altitude Andean lakes. The inclusion of adult flies suggests some surface feeding on emerged insects, a strategy common among small characids that position themselves near the surface.

Mating

No specific field or laboratory observations of mating behaviour in Grundulus cochae have been published in the available literature. As a small characid in the subfamily Grundulinae, it is expected to follow the general characid pattern of egg-scattering spawning without parental care, with pairs or small groups releasing eggs among aquatic vegetation or over substrate.

The near-shore habitat with aquatic vegetation (Nasturtium officinale) described for the species would provide suitable egg-deposition sites. Given the cold, high-altitude conditions of Laguna de la Cocha, any seasonality in spawning may be tied to temperature fluctuations driven by the Andean climate rather than to wet-dry cycles typical of lowland Amazonian characids. Detailed courtship or reproductive behaviour remains undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Grundulus cochae in either wild or captive settings has not been formally documented in the published literature available at the time of writing. The general characid reproductive template of egg-scattering among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, and no parental care is the reasonable baseline expectation for a small Grundulinae species.

The cold-water, high-altitude origin of the species — Laguna de la Cocha at nearly 2,2625 ft — means that any captive-breeding attempt would require significantly cooler water temperatures than are typical for most aquarium characids. To the knowledge available here, G. cochae has not been maintained or bred in the hobby. Its restricted wild range and Near Threatened status make the establishment of a captive population a conservation priority, but no such programme is known to be running.

In the aquarium

Grundulus cochae is not an established aquarium fish. It is not known to be available in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry accounts have been published. Its cold-water requirements — stemming from its origin in a high-Andean lake at approximately 2,2654 ft — would demand conditions quite different from standard tropical aquarium keeping: cool temperatures consistent with a high-altitude Andean environment, clear and well-oxygenated water, and likely relatively neutral to slightly acidic or neutral pH.

For the specialist interested in Andean coldwater characids, the species would require a species-only or carefully matched setup, dedicated filtration for cold water, and would likely do best in a schooling group given its pelagic, lake-dwelling ecology. In the absence of any published captive-care data, recommendations beyond these inferences are not possible. Acquisition of wild specimens is inadvisable given the species' Near Threatened status and extremely limited range.

Conservation

Grundulus cochae is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 10 October 2014 and published in 2016. The primary conservation concern is the species' extreme range restriction: it is known only from Laguna de la Cocha and associated near-shore and tributary habitats, with a total extent of occurrence of approximately 40 mi². A species confined to a single lake system has essentially no geographic buffer against local disturbance.

The IUCN assessment identifies the presence of introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as a potential threat, though the degree of interaction with G. cochae in different microhabitats is uncertain. The lack of protected-area coverage for the relevant lake habitat is flagged, and population trend is listed as unknown. A further complication is the unresolved taxonomic question of whether G. cochae is a valid species distinct from Grundulus bogotensis: if the synonymy proposed by Mojica et al. (2012) were accepted, the conservation status and management of the population would need to be reconsidered under the broader G. bogotensis assessment.

At present no targeted conservation programme for G. cochae is known to be in place. The species' cold-water, high-altitude habitat and very limited distribution make it one of the more narrowly endemic characids in northern South America.
