Taxonomy & naming
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi was formally described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Boulenger in 1895. The species belongs to the family Characidae and is placed in the monotypic genus Gymnocorymbus, which accommodates no other species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the parenthetical authority notation — (Boulenger, 1895) — indicates that Boulenger originally placed the species in a different genus and it was subsequently moved to Gymnocorymbus.
The species has been known under a handful of trade synonyms over the decades, and the proliferation of common names — black tetra, black widow tetra, butterfly tetra, and black skirt tetra — reflects its global presence in the aquarium hobby rather than any taxonomic uncertainty. Of these, 'black skirt tetra' is now the most widely standardised name in the English-language hobby. Within the broader subfamily-level arrangement of the Characidae, Gymnocorymbus is placed among the characins of the Rio Paraguay basin clade, though subfamily assignments within this family have been subject to ongoing revision as molecular data are incorporated.
Morphology
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin. Seriously Fish reports a maximum standard length of around 2.5 in under aquarium conditions; FishBase records up to 3 in SL, likely representing wild or optimal-condition adults. The body profile is roughly triangular when viewed from the side: deep through the midsection, tapering sharply toward a forked tail, with a prominent, high-based anal fin that is one of the species' most diagnostic features.
The colour pattern is the fish's trademark. Juveniles and sub-adults are silver to pewter on the anterior body, with two prominent vertical black bars behind the operculum and through the body; the posterior half of the body, the dorsal fin, and particularly the expansive anal fin are jet black, giving the species its characteristic 'skirt' silhouette. This intensity diminishes with age — older adults become a more uniform steely grey with the dark pigmentation fading toward charcoal — a process that sometimes disappoints aquarists who bought the fish as juveniles. Selectively bred long-finned variants exist, and the hobby also sees leucistic 'white skirt tetra' forms, as well as artificially dyed individuals that carry injected fluorescent colours — a practice that causes physiological stress and shortens lifespan. GloFish varieties are genetically modified fluorescent forms produced commercially.
Habitat
The native range of Gymnocorymbus ternetzi encompasses the Paraguay River basin and the Guaporé River drainage (part of the upper Madeira system) in southern Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina. These are warm subtropical to tropical drainages in the interior of South America, characterised by a mix of open rivers, floodplain backwaters, and the kind of smaller slow-moving tributaries and creeks that the species particularly favours. FishBase notes the species is pelagic and occupies middle and upper water layers.
Seriously Fish describes the preferred microhabitat as small, slow-moving creeks, tributaries, and streams with dense overhanging vegetation. This suggests an affinity for marginal and shaded environments — the sort of structure-rich, plant-fringed water that is typical for many characin species in the Paraguayan region. Water parameters in the native range span a wide band: Seriously Fish records pH 6.0–7.0 and hardness 5–20°H, while FishBase extends the tolerated pH range to 8.0, consistent with the species' demonstrated resilience in harder water. Temperature across the range runs 68–79 °F (68–79°F), reflecting the subtropical character of the southern drainages.
Feeding
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is an opportunistic omnivore. FishBase lists the natural diet as worms, small crustaceans, and insects, typical for a mid-water characin that hunts by sight in the upper column. The species takes food from the surface as well as the water column, picking off invertebrates and organic particles as they become available.
In captivity it is famously undemanding. Seriously Fish notes that the species is unfussy and will accept good-quality dried flakes and granules readily, making it an accessible fish for beginners. That said, condition and colouration benefit from a varied diet: live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and bloodworm (chironomid larvae) round out the nutritional profile and encourage the fish to display and come into breeding condition. Feeding small amounts two or three times daily works better than a single large meal, matching the fish's natural pattern of continuous opportunistic grazing.
Mating
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is an egg-scattering species with no parental care. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle in non-breeding fish: Seriously Fish and FishBase both note that males are slimmer and slightly smaller than females, with more pointed fins — the anal fin of the female is broader and more squared at the front edge, a reliable distinguishing character. In breeding condition, females become noticeably deeper-bodied as they fill with eggs.
Courtship is typical for small characins: males chase females actively through the tank, often becoming more persistent in the early morning hours. A group of fish of both sexes in a well-planted tank with suitable water conditions will often spawn spontaneously without any special intervention. Conditioning the group on live and frozen foods accelerates readiness, and slightly cooler, softer water can serve as a spawning trigger when transitioning from maintenance conditions.
Breeding
Breeding Gymnocorymbus ternetzi in the aquarium is straightforward, and almost all fish available commercially are captive-bred — the species has been propagated by the ornamental fish trade on an industrial scale for decades, and wild-caught specimens are essentially unavailable. A dedicated breeding tank of around 10–15 US gal, softened and slightly acidified water, and a substrate of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops provides the essentials.
Spawning pairs or small groups scatter adhesive eggs among plant leaves and the spawning medium. Seriously Fish records incubation at 18–36 hours, making this one of the faster-hatching characins; at 79 °F the fry are free-swimming within two days of spawning. The adults have no interest in protecting the eggs and will consume them readily, so breeders should remove the parents or the spawning medium as soon as egg-laying is observed. Newly hatched fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered dry foods over the first two weeks.
In the aquarium
The black skirt tetra has been in the aquarium hobby since at least the mid-twentieth century and remains one of the most widely available characins globally. It is a peaceful, active schooling fish best kept in groups of eight or more; Seriously Fish notes that keeping twelve or more individuals reduces any tendency toward fin-nipping, which the species can exhibit in small or sparse groups, particularly toward long-finned tankmates. A tank of 20 US gal or more provides adequate swimming space for a proper school.
Water chemistry is broadly tolerant: the species thrives across pH 6.0–8.0 and handles moderate hardness without difficulty, making it compatible with a wide range of tap-water conditions. Temperature should be maintained in the 68–79 °F range. Planted aquaria with open central swimming space suit it well; dense vegetation along the sides and back provides the shaded structure the species uses in nature. Good tankmates include other similarly sized, peaceful community fish — other tetras, corydoras, rasboras, peaceful danios, and small loricariids. The species is hardy and relatively long-lived, with a lifespan of three to five years common under good aquarium conditions. Aquarists should avoid purchasing artificially dyed specimens, which are readily identified by their unnatural fluorescent colours and which have a significantly reduced life expectancy due to the injection process.
Conservation
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 4 March 2021. The IUCN rationale notes the species' wide distribution across the Paraguay and Guaporé drainages of southern South America, its common occurrence across that range, and its relative resilience to anthropogenic disturbances — including the documented ability to persist and even establish in disturbed habitats outside its native range.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ecological Risk Screening Summary documents introduction events in Colorado (1980–1984), Florida (1978–1979), and Louisiana (2004), none of which resulted in permanent establishment, underscoring that the species is not considered a significant invasion risk in temperate North America. Established non-native populations have been documented in Colombia, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, and Canada, likely originating from aquarium releases into thermally suitable water. These introductions reflect the species' enormous commercial footprint in the global ornamental trade rather than any particular ecological aggressiveness. The overall conservation picture is reassuring: a wide-ranging, abundant, commercially reproduced species with no current evidence of range-wide decline.
