Taxonomy & naming
Parotocinclus collinsae was described by Schmidt and Ferraris in 1985, in a paper published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, volume 98(4): 854–861, based on specimens collected from the Essequibo River basin of Guyana near the Alfred Emerson Field Station at Kartabo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — species ID 57032) records the full authority as Schmidt & Ferraris, 1985, and the name is not parenthesised because the species was originally placed in Parotocinclus. The type locality is the Essequibo River basin, Guyana, in the vicinity of Kartabo.
Parotocinclus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of family Loricariidae. The Essequibo, draining the Guiana Shield, hosts a distinctive ichthyofauna with high levels of endemism; P. collinsae represents one of the few Parotocinclus species from the Guianas rather than the more species-rich Atlantic coastal drainages of Brazil.
The ETYFish Project lists this species under the combination Rhinotocinclus collinsae, reflecting a proposed reclassification of some Parotocinclus into the resurrected or newly erected genus Rhinotocinclus. As of the current writing, FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes (CAS) — the authority for valid names followed by this site — retain the combination Parotocinclus collinsae, and that is the name used here.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 2 in standard length (SL), making P. collinsae slightly larger than most of its Brazilian congeners while remaining firmly within the micro-loricariid size class. The body follows the characteristic Hypoptopomatinae bauplan: dorsoventrally compressed, fully armoured in overlapping bony scutes, with a ventral suctorial mouth, dorsally placed eyes, and a slender caudal peduncle. The arrangement of abdominal plates — a key character in Parotocinclus systematics — conforms to the diagnostic pattern of the genus.
Colouration in preserved specimens is typically brownish above, paler on the ventral surface, with variable mottling or spotting that varies with substrate and condition. The fine, multicusped teeth are adapted for scraping biofilm rather than excavating harder substrates. As in related species, breeding males are expected to develop interopercular odontodes, and gravid females are broader-bodied when viewed dorsally. Habitat
Parotocinclus collinsae is known from the Essequibo River basin of Guyana — one of the major river systems draining the Guiana Shield, flowing northward through interior Guyana to the Atlantic coast. The Kartabo area, near the confluence of the Cuyuni and Mazaruni rivers with the lower Essequibo, is a region of lowland tropical forest and granite-floored stream systems. Guiana Shield rivers in this area tend to be clear to slightly tea-coloured (blackwater-influenced), warm, and soft to moderately soft — a product of the ancient, nutrient-poor granitic geology of the shield.
Microhabitat for a small Hypoptopomatinae would be expected to include rocky riffles and runs, submerged wood accumulations, and leaf litter deposits. The IUCN assessment notes that the species has a wide distribution within the Essequibo drainage and faces no major identified threats, suggesting it occupies a range of microhabitat types across this large basin. No species-specific water chemistry data are available in the sources consulted.
Feeding
Like all Hypoptopomatinae, Parotocinclus collinsae is presumed to be a benthic micro-grazer — an aufwuchs specialist. The fine, multicusped teeth and ventral suctorial mouth are adapted for rasping epilithic biofilm, periphyton, diatom films, and fine algal mats from hard and semi-hard substrates. On Guiana Shield streams, where substrate includes granite cobble, exposed bedrock surfaces, and abundant submerged wood, such grazing surfaces would be productive and diverse.
No dietary or gut content studies specific to P. collinsae are available. By analogy with congeners and closely related Hypoptopomatinae genera, the diet likely includes algal cells, diatoms, cyanobacteria, bacteria, fungi, fine detritus, and the small invertebrates incidentally ingested while rasping biofilm. In aquaria, related species are maintained successfully on algae wafers, spirulina products, and blanched vegetables.
Mating
No published observations of courtship behaviour exist for Parotocinclus collinsae. The general reproductive biology of Hypoptopomatinae suggests that males establish and defend small territories associated with spawning substrates. Males with well-developed interopercular odontodes likely engage in lateral displays and contact competition during the breeding season; a ripe female, visibly broader-bodied, is courted and led to the spawning site.
The Essequibo basin has a bimodal rainfall pattern driven by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, producing two wet seasons annually (roughly May–August and December–January). This hydrological cycle likely mediates reproductive timing in P. collinsae as it does for other seasonally variable Neotropical loricariids.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Parotocinclus collinsae have been located in the published or accessible hobbyist literature. The species does not appear to be established in the ornamental trade. Based on Hypoptopomatinae reproductive biology broadly, spawning would be expected to involve small clutches of adhesive eggs deposited on hard surfaces — the underside of flat rocks, smooth driftwood, or leaf surfaces — with at least paternal guarding of the clutch through hatching.
The 2 in SL adult size suggests the species could be maintained and potentially bred in small aquaria under appropriate conditions, but no husbandry data exist to confirm this.
In the aquarium
Parotocinclus collinsae does not appear to be available through the ornamental trade. No export records from Guyana for this species have been identified, and it is essentially unknown in the hobby. The following notes are extrapolated from the general husbandry requirements of Hypoptopomatinae micro-grazers and the known habitat characteristics of Guiana Shield streams.
The species would be suited to small aquaria (15–30 US gal) with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting its Guiana Shield origin — pH approximately 5.5–7.0, low to moderate hardness, temperature 75–82 °F. Gentle to moderate water flow with good oxygenation is appropriate. Hard substrate (rounded river cobble, smooth stone), pieces of driftwood, and leaf litter would provide both grazing surfaces and shelter. Bright lighting that promotes biofilm growth on hard surfaces is beneficial.
Being a small, benthic micro-grazer, P. collinsae would be compatible with small, non-predatory tankmates: small pencilfish, dwarf characids native to the Guianas, and other micro-loricariids would make ecologically appropriate companions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus collinsae as Least Concern in October 2020. The assessment notes that the species is distributed across the Essequibo River basin of Guyana and identifies no major threats to its survival. The Essequibo drainage, while subject to increasing gold mining activity — particularly artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in interior Guyana — retains large areas of relatively intact tropical forest and moderate-to-good water quality over much of its extent.
Mercury contamination from gold mining is a growing concern across Guiana Shield river systems and can affect benthic invertebrate communities on which micro-grazers such as Parotocinclus depend. However, at the time of the 2020 assessment these pressures were not considered sufficient to move the species out of the Least Concern category. Its distribution across a large drainage basin provides some resilience compared to the narrowly endemic Atlantic coastal drainage species in the same genus.
