The firehead tetra is one of the most recognisable small characins in the aquarium hobby: a slender, silver-bodied fish barely 1.5 in long whose head blazes red from the snout to just behind the gill cover, the colour deepest and most saturated in a well-conditioned school. Two close relatives share the 'rummy-nose' look — the slightly larger Hemigrammus rhodostomus and the very similar Petitella georgiae — and all three are sold interchangeably under the same common names in the trade, but H. bleheri is the species most often imported, the most intensely coloured, and the one whose type locality is the blackwater Rio Negro of Brazil. Described in 1986 by Jacques Géry and Volker Mahnert from specimens collected by Heiko Bleher, after whom the species is named, it remains a staple of the planted-tank hobby and a benchmark for water quality in any aquarium that keeps it.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus bleheri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry and his Swiss colleague Volker Mahnert in July 1986, in a paper titled 'A new rummy-nose tetra from the Rio Negro, Brazil: Hemigrammus bleheri n.sp. (Characidae, Tetragonopterinae), with comments on Paracheirodon.' The type locality is the Rio Negro, Brazil. The species was placed in Hemigrammus, a large and heterogeneous genus of small Neotropical characins in the family Characidae.

A significant taxonomic revision published in Neotropical Ichthyology in 2020 (Bittencourt et al.) used molecular and morphological data to resolve the relationships of the neon tetras and their allies. That work transferred H. bleheri to the resurrected genus Petitella, where it becomes Petitella bleheri (Géry & Mahnert, 1986), and demonstrated a strongly supported sister-taxon relationship with Petitella georgiae. FishBase currently follows this reclassification and lists the species as Petitella bleheri. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the international authority for valid names, and users should consult the most current edition for the accepted combination; the name Hemigrammus bleheri remains widely used in the aquarium trade and in older literature.

H. bleheri is one of three species sold as 'rummy-nose tetras' in the hobby. It can be distinguished from Hemigrammus rhodostomus — the true rummy-nose, reaching around 2–3 in — by its considerably smaller size (maximum around 1.5 in SL) and more vivid, more extensively red head. It differs from Petitella georgiae by its smaller size, slimmer body, and the greater intensity and extent of red on the head.

Morphology

Hemigrammus bleheri is a small, slender, laterally compressed characin reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length, making it notably smaller than the other two rummy-nose look-alikes. The body is elongate and torpedo-shaped, silver to lightly iridescent along the flanks, with a moderately forked, hyaline tail fin that carries a bold black-and-white pattern: a broad black central blotch on the base of the caudal peduncle, bordered above and below by white or pale patches that create a striking checkerboard effect extending into the lower and upper caudal lobes.

The defining feature is the head. In good condition the entire head from the snout tip to a vertical line just posterior to the gill cover is suffused with vivid scarlet-red, and in prime fish this bleeds onto the anterior back and gill plates. The intensity of the red is sensitive to water chemistry, temperature, stress level, and diet, and experienced aquarists use the vividness of the colour as a proxy for water quality: a fading or pale-headed school is a reliable early warning of deteriorating conditions. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females may be slightly deeper-bodied when gravid, but the species cannot be sexed with confidence from colouration alone.

Habitat

Hemigrammus bleheri is native to the Rio Negro basin of Brazil and the Rio Meta basin in Colombia, two of South America's major blackwater and clearwater drainages. The Rio Negro, the largest left-bank tributary of the Amazon, is defined by its dark, tea-coloured water — stained by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from surrounding forest soils — which is extremely soft, very acidic, and low in dissolved minerals. The Meta drains the Colombian Llanos eastward into the Orinoco system, with conditions that can differ from Rio Negro blackwater but also encompass soft, acidic forest streams.

Within these basins the species inhabits slow-moving to still water: forest streams, flooded margins, and backwater pools where leaf litter accumulates and the canopy shade keeps light dim. Water parameters at type-locality and nearby collecting stations are characteristically extreme by general aquarium standards: pH in the range of 5.0–6.0, very low hardness (well under 5 °dH in the blackest water), and temperatures of approximately 73–79 °F. These conditions are the benchmark against which aquarium water should be measured if the goal is to keep the fish in peak colour and health.

Feeding

In the wild, Hemigrammus bleheri is an opportunistic micro-predator and omnivore, taking small invertebrates from the water column and at the surface — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and any suitably sized falling insects — as well as algae and plant-derived material. The dietary range is broad and reflects the fish's active, constant foraging in its soft-water forest habitat.

In the aquarium it is unfussy and accepts a wide variety of foods readily. High-quality fine-particled flake or micro-pellets form an adequate staple, but the fish thrives when the diet is supplemented regularly with frozen and live foods: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worm, and bloodworm all promote condition and intensify the red head coloration. The species is small enough that food particle size matters — oversized pellets or freeze-dried chunks are ignored. Feeding two or three times daily in small quantities suits its continuous grazing habit and avoids the water quality spikes that a single large feeding can cause in the soft, low-buffering-capacity water that the fish prefers.

Mating

Hemigrammus bleheri is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the generalized characin reproductive pattern. Sexes come together when water conditions and nutritional status are favourable; there is no prolonged pair bond, and spawning in a conditioned group is semi-continuous rather than strictly seasonal. Males pursue females actively, nudging and circling before a pair aligns flank-to-flank among fine-leaved plants or spawning substrate and releases gametes in a brief quivering rush.

Because the species does not build nests or defend territories, a spawning group in a well-planted aquarium may spawn at intervals without any special intervention from the keeper. Eggs are adhesive and settle among vegetation; both eggs and any fry that hatch are liable to be eaten by the adults and by tankmates, so deliberate breeding requires separating the spawning group from the eggs.

Breeding

Breeding Hemigrammus bleheri in captivity is achievable with attention to water chemistry, which is the most critical variable. The fish spawn most readily in very soft, acidic water — pH 5.5–6.5, hardness below 4 °dH, and temperature in the upper range, around 79–82 °F — that mimics the blackwater conditions of the Rio Negro. A small dedicated breeding tank (10–15 US gal) with dim lighting, a sponge filter or no filtration (to avoid drawing eggs into mechanical filters), and a dense spawning mop of fine-leaved plant material or synthetic fibre is the standard setup.

A conditioned pair or small group is introduced in the evening; spawning typically occurs the following morning. The adhesive eggs fall and lodge among the plant material. Because the adults will eat the eggs immediately, the spawning medium should be removed or the adults transferred out as soon as spawning is complete. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–48 hours at breeding temperature, and the fry become free-swimming within a few days. First foods must be very fine: infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, then newly hatched Artemia nauplii as the fry grow. Lifespan in a well-maintained aquarium is typically 3–5 years.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus bleheri is peaceful, sociable, and best kept in schools of at least six individuals — larger groups of ten or more produce the schooling behaviour and collective colour display that make the species so prized. A group of a dozen fish moving in loose formation, heads all blazing red, is a showpiece in any planted aquarium. The fish is a mid-water dweller and compatible with other small, non-aggressive species that share its water-chemistry requirements: small rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma, and other small soft-water tetras.

Water quality is the central challenge. This species is notably sensitive to pH swings, nitrogenous waste build-up, and any departure from soft, acidic conditions — head colour fading is the first visible symptom. Target pH 5.5–6.8, hardness under 8 °dH, and temperature 73–81 °F; pristine water with minimal nitrate is more important than hitting any precise number. Regular partial water changes, careful feeding to avoid waste, and mature biological filtration are non-negotiable. A well-planted setup with subdued lighting and some tannin from driftwood or botanicals both suits the fish aesthetically and helps maintain the mild acidity it prefers. The species is not difficult to keep once the water parameters are dialled in, but it is unforgiving of shortcuts in water management, and this should be stated plainly to anyone buying it for the first time.

Conservation

Hemigrammus bleheri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 4 March 2021. The species has a broad enough distribution across the Rio Negro and Meta basins to buffer against localised threats, and the vast extent and relative intactness of the Rio Negro watershed provide a substantial natural reservoir. Commercial collection for the ornamental fish trade has been ongoing for decades, but there is no evidence that harvest at historical levels has caused population-level declines, and much of the fish now available in the trade is tank-raised rather than wild-caught.

Longer-term concerns for the species mirror those for Amazonian biodiversity generally: deforestation in the catchment alters hydrology and sediment loads, the blackwater chemistry of rivers like the Rio Negro is sensitive to land-use change, and climate-driven shifts in rainfall patterns affect the flooded habitats the fish depends on. None of these risks has yet driven a change in the IUCN assessment, but they warrant continued monitoring. For aquarists, sourcing tank-bred stock where available remains the best individual contribution to reducing pressure on wild populations.
